2 Movie Night: Sunday, July 2 nd, at 6:30 PM, in the church lounge. Special showing of the National Geographic film Before the Flood This 2016 film features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. With unprecedented access to scientists, political leaders, and thought leaders, DiCaprio shares a riveting account of the changes now occurring as well as the actions we can take to prevent the disruption of life on our planet. Please join in cleaning up the church yard and garden on Thursday, June 29 th at 6:30 PM. Bring any gardening tools you may have, including gloves and bags for weeds, etc. After June 29 th, we will be scheduling clean-ups on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursdays of the month at 6:30 PM. Once we get the worst of the weeds pulled and shrubs trimmed, it won t take long each time. It will just help our church house look more welcoming if it s not overrun with weeds. We want to Be the Church, after all, and protecting the environment includes keeping our green spaces beautiful!

6 Music Notes Ramona Kime, Music Director I have been spending a lot of time looking for movies and documentaries that shine a light on social justice and environmental issues (Be the Church, after all!) for our monthly movie night. There are also several wonderful movies that speak to the power of music. Here are some good ones: August Rush (2007) (trailer: ) The story of a charismatic young Irish guitarist and a sheltered young cellist who have a chance encounter one magical night above New York's Washington Square, but are soon torn apart, leaving in their wake an infant, August Rush, orphaned by circumstance. Now performing on the streets of New York and cared for by a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams), August uses his remarkable musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth. (synopsis from imbd.com) Copying Beethoven (2006) (trailer: ) Vienna, In the days before the first performance of the Ninth Symphony, Beethoven needs help with copying out the charts, so a promising student of composition, Anna Holtz, 23, is sent to assist him. She not only aids the transcription of the notes, she provides guidance from the orchestra pit as Beethoven conducts the work's debut. During the next two years, the final ones of Beethoven's life, Anna provides assistance to the deaf, temperamental, ailing man. In return, he tutors her in composition and explains to her the ideas and principles of Romanticism. He tries to speak for God. (synopsis from imbd.com) Mr. Holland s Opus (1996) (trailer: Glenn Holland (played by Richard Dreyfuss) is a musician and composer who takes a teaching job to pay the rent while, in his 'spare time', he can strive to achieve his true goal - compose one memorable piece of music to leave his mark on the world. As Holland discovers, 'Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans' and as the years unfold, the joy of sharing his contagious passion for music with his students becomes his new definition of success. (synopsis from imbd.com) Music of the Heart (1999) (trailer: ) The true story of a young teacher (played by Meryl Streep) who fights against the board of education in her bid to teach underprivileged kids in a Harlem school the beauty of music through the violin. In her struggle, she loses everything as the system comes down on her with all their might, but her determination for the kids happiness helps her to battle back with wonderfully inspirational results. (synopsis from imdb.com)

8 I cannot believe it is July already. I hope you are all having a good summer. Outreach had a good meeting June 18 th. We had not met for a couple of months. Generally we meet the 3 rd Sunday of the month. We welcome any one to come and see what we are about. We also welcome all your ideas. This year we are again joining with Peace Lutheran to sponsor a Concert on the Courthouse square lawn. August 10 is the date we have picked. We will be having our famous chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches. We will also have bubbles and sidewalk chalk for the kids. This was a big hit last year. We still have money left from the loose change offering, we took up last year for the concert, to pay this year s concert fee. The name of the band Full Circle with Tom Baker. Tom is the son of Daryl and Mary Jean Baker who are long time Charlotte people. Please put this date on your calendar s and come out and support the church and the community concerts. We can always use help too so let myself or someone on Outreach know if you can help. Next spring Outreach will again be putting together spring shoe boxes that we donate to SIREN/Eaton and Eaton Clothing and Furniture. They then give them out to the children for activities to do during spring break. I realize it is early to be bringing this up however the stores will start having sales on the types of items that we put in the boxes. We like crayons, coloring books, reading books, small toys for inside or outside, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, balls, etc. If you purchase things just put on the counter in the Bess Fulton room to Outreach s attention and I will see that they are stored away for next year. Last spring we did 60 and that seems to be a good number. We are in need of boxes! Thank you in advance for your generosity. In November we have brown bags to collect nonperishable food items that we distribute to Helping Hands and SIREN/Eaton and in December we have white bags for personal hygiene items and these go to the above 2 places plus Eaton Clothing and Furniture. These items are not just needed at those times but they are an ongoing need. There is a basket near the elevator for food and personal care items and there is a plastic tub on the counter in the Bess Fulton room for personal care items particularly the small items you get when staying at a motel or hotel. I always save them and put them in that box. So, if you are traveling this summer and you have some of those items or if you could buy extra food or personal care items at the grocery store and donate it to the basket or tub it would be much appreciated. Starting this month on the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of each month at 6:30 in the evening we are asking people to come and help clean and spruce up the church grounds. Weeding needs to be done on a regular basis. Shrubs and bushes need trimming. The sidewalks need edging. There have been individuals in the past who have done some of this but it is getting hard to keep up with it on a regular basis. We felt if it was worked on a couple times a month we would stay on top of it. So please come if you can and let s keep our church grounds beautiful. Bring gloves, rakes, trimmers, bags, and any other gardening tools you feel are necessary. This can be a fun time of working with fellow church members. Our next meeting is July 16. Stay Tuned. Mary Normand, Chair
