1 DLSFKJLASKDJF ABIDING SAVIOR Lutheran Church and AUGUST 2016 Day by Day Joy to the World the Lord has come! I ve noticed that several television and radio programs have decided to observe what they call Christmas in July. Their programming is filled with Christmas stories, Christmas programs, and Christmas carols. Normally, I would have told myself and anyone else who would listen that I am not yet ready to think about Christmas. It reminds me that I haven t written an Advent series yet, I haven t begun to prepare the services for worship on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. In my mind, Christmas should stay in December. Well, that s my ordinary mind. But in the last few days, we have seen violence brought against police in the college town of Baton Rogue. It would have been hard for the Baton Rogue locals to believe that there are people who hate their police. And in France, the city of Nice now stands in the long line of people have been the victims of a terrorist attack. An organization called Black Lives Matter is trying to conduct a series of peaceful demonstrations throughout the country to bring about a much needed cooperation between people of color and the respective police organizations. Because these peaceful demonstrations have been in some cases, anything but peaceful, it would do the world much good to stop and concentrate on the message the shepherds received from the angels mouths that declared that at the hand of God; this is the time for Peace on Earth, Good Will toward men. A large dose of Christmas that is truly centered in the peace that only the Prince of Peace, Jesus the Christ, can bless every resident of every nation around the world. We know that Jesus will, at the Father s own time, one day return to take us to heaven where peace reigns. But until then, we pray that God would help us make every day in January, February, March, April, May and the like, be like Christmas. The gathering of family and friends is always a blessing. Eating fine food is something we can all be blessed with daily. But perhaps the Christmas tradition that would do us the greatest amount of good right now would be the giving of gifts. I m not speaking about the gifts we wrap up and place under a tree. We all have the opportunity to bring peace to our neighbors of every background, culture and race by treating them as brothers and sisters in Christ. Speaking well of the law abiding people of Islam, encouraging your kids to get to know their neighbors of color is a fine Christmas gift that brings an ever growing peace to them. Let our daily Christmas gifts be putting the best construction on everything and everyone so that peace can reign in our neighborhoods and most importantly we can teach our children how to be givers of peace or as we might say, learning how to celebrate Christ s day everyday they live. Your Servant in Christ, Pastor Tom ROUGH ROAD AHEAD It had been an especially long trip home, and the weary traveler still had many more miles to go. So, he winced at a sign warning Rough Road Ahead 4 miles. Rough, indeed. The lanes narrowed, and the shoulder disappeared. Traffic slowed to a crawl as drivers navigated around potholes and moving construction equipment. But sure enough, after exactly four miles, the road became smooth again. In this world you will have trouble, Jesus said. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33, NIV). Notice that Jesus didn t say we might have trouble. Sooner or later, problems will come. The road will get rough. But Jesus has already defeated everything the world can throw our way. We just have to keep moving, fueled on by hope. Communicating Christ s Love and Our Love for Him
