Praise be to God! Death, where is thy sting? Death, where is thy victory? New life is springing up at Pisgah Presbyterian Church.

We look forward to their continued work in the life and ministry of Christ s Church. The church has been granted permission by the Presbytery to form and elect a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC).

1 Pisgah Presbyterian Church Woodford County, Kentucky April 2018 The Pisgah Post Worship God, study the Scriptures, practice the Teachings of Jesus as Lord and Savior Interim Thoughts On April 1, Easter Sunday, we celebrated the greatest April fool joke of all time. God raised Jesus from death to life so that we might have abundant life now and everlasting life in the life to come. Praise be to God! Death, where is thy sting? Death, where is thy victory? New life is springing up at Pisgah Presbyterian Church. Not only are trees budding and grass is growing, but new life is showing its bud as well. On Palm Sunday, four youth were received into membership of this church. We look forward to their continued work in the life and ministry of Christ s Church. The church has been granted permission by the Presbytery to form and elect a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). The Church Nominating Committee will be soliciting your suggestions for persons to serve on this search committee for a new pastor. They will then present a slate of nominees to the congregation to elect in the near future. The Session has approved a request from the Property Committee to form a Manse Steering Committee to reflect upon the future of that facility. A fresh look at some possible future uses for that space. A spring workday is planned for Saturday, April 21 to prepare the grounds and buildings for the arrival of Spring. A Membership Roll review task force has been attempting to work with session to clearly identify those who are active members of this church as we prepare to search for a new pastor. As the church looks forward to its future ministry together, all are needed to offer their time, money and gifts to that effort. Fellowship Committee continues to provide fellowship opportunities for all to nurture and celebrate our life together. The Potato/Salad Bar was a grand success. We look forward to hearing about future opportunities to be together in Christ name. Deacons continue to provide care through meals, transportation and calls of encouragement to our fellow members. They truly are people of love and compassion. Worship and Christian Education Committees continue to provide opportunities for each one of us to grow in our faith and worship our God. A special thanks to the worship committee, leaders, staff and musicians for their offerings this Lenten/Easter season. Stewardship Committee is looking into setting up On-line giving and promoting the Special Offerings of our denomination. Mission is highlighting opportunities for Pisgah members to participate in local Mission activities. Both committees are trying to tell the story of our ministry. Administration/Finance Committee has continued to oversee our budget process and monthly oversite of income and expenses. As you can see, the leadership of the church is attempting to engage the congregation in particular ways to participate and support this ministry we share together. Come join us as we attempt to increase our witness in and beyond this community of faith for God in Christ. Happy Eastertide! May God bless you in new and different ways. Pastor Baker Progress on the Pastoral Search Front The church nominating committee (CNC) has been formed and had our first meeting. Of course the first order of business will be the selection of the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). The congregation will be invited to recommend members for that group. The best news is: Transylvania Presbytery has given us the Go Ahead for our search. That means two things; one, our church is healthy and proceeding to be in good shape to receive a pastor, and two, that we can get started immediately with the procedure. There is more good news from the Presbytery; they have assigned two liaisons to support us in our search process. Both Rev. Jim Gilbert who knows us quite well, and elder Candice Purdom have been trained for this service, and they look forward to assisting our PNC. The next meeting of the CNC is scheduled for April 3 at 6:00p.m. in the Academy. Manse News A Manse Steering Committee has been formed and will hold their first meeting on April 10 at 6:00p.m. We have a very strong and experienced team ready to address the challenges presented by the perennial white elephant. We will be inviting comments and ideas from the congregation and to support that, we plan to offer an attic-to-cellar tour sometime during this month, and perhaps a virtual tour as well. We will set up a tree planting to be completed during Children s Church on Sunday 22nd (Earth Day). We might be doing other plantings, as well. Grounds cleanup, raking leaves and picking up sticks. Phil Bisbee, Committee Chair The next Property Committee meeting has been changed to Thursday, April 5 at 6:00p.m. in the Academy Building. Those Beautiful Windows! Each Sunday as you enter the sanctuary, you are surrounded by tall stained glass windows that have watched over Pisgah worshippers for 130 years. In 1888, member Dr. Robert C. James hired artisan George Barnes of Philadelphia to create the Gothic shaped windows in memory of Dr. James late mother, Nannie. Pisgah Church and gardening were life-long passions of Nannie James. The four windows with garden plants symbolize seasons in Christ s life. Look closely and find the Hellebore called Christmas rose, which symbolizes Christ s birth. The Palm window reminds us of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem celebrated on Palm Sunday. The Easter Lily window stands for the Resurrection of Christ, a new birth, a new season of hope for mankind. The beautiful Iris symbolizes the Trinity, the connection between and among the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. You may notice that the windows do not appear in sequential order. Sometime in the 20th Century they were removed for repair and cleaning. They were replaced back out of order! Nannie James was the great-great grandmother of Bob James, whose family continues serving and worshipping at Pisgah Presbyterian Church today. The round stained glass window above the pulpit was given by the congregation in honor of longtime pastor Rutherford Douglas, who lovingly served Pisgah from Can you find the descending dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit? When you enter the sanctuary, may you be welcomed by the beauty of these windows that call to mind the life of our Lord and Savior, His call to us of loving discipleship.

3 Mission Committee Update The Mission Committee continues to meet monthly on the third Sunday of the month immediately after church. You are welcome to join us at any meeting. In this year s budget the Mission Committee has been allotted $13,300 to distribute. In last month s Pisgah Post we listed last year s recipients. If you wish to have a charity considered, please let me know. Our 5th Sunday collection for April will be for Woodford County Meals on Wheels. Make sure you read the article below to learn more about their work and needs. Each month we hope to feature a participatory mission opportunity something you can DO for Pisgah s mission efforts. We hope you can find an activity that strikes your fancy and could use your energy. Lastly we have decided not to have a Pisgah Academy Day this year and put our efforts towards one in 2019 and we will not be participating as a church in Relay for Life this year. Sue Fosson, Committee Chair Wake up and smell the coffee Often, when you first walk into the Academy building for an event such as Sunday school, a committee meeting, or Mary Shepherd circle, you smell the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. It s not just any old brand of coffee. It is coffee donated by the mission committee that was purchased from the Equal Exchange Fair Trade Program. Pisgah s Mission Committee has supported Equal Exchange since 2012 by supplying the kitchen with the tasty brew and also selling the product to you at cost. By purchasing the coffee, you are supporting small South American farmers that participate in the co-op program. The program empowers the small farmer and allows them to stay in business while competing with large businesses and multinational corporations. The coffee display has been stocked and coffee is ready for purchase! Please consider supporting the Equal Exchange program. The coffee is located in the Academy building. Maggie Howard Fifth Sunday Offering in April Meals on Wheels Do you know what service Pisgah members have been doing in Woodford County for over 35 years? If your answer was delivering meals for the Senior Citizens Center s Meals on Wheels program, you were correct. A big thank you goes out to the current Pisgah Meals on Wheels team which includes Dottie Schmidt, Sandi Bromagen, Amy White and Libby Jones. The Mission committee has recently decided to donate our 5 th Sunday offering in April to help with the Woodford County Meals on Wheels program. This program is an Elder Nutrition Program that identifies nutritionally at-risk seniors who are 60+ years old and provides quality meals to the homebound clients so that seniors who partake in the meals receive at least 1/3 of the current daily recommended dietary allowances. The center uses outreach methods such as referrals, assessments and home visits to identify eligible individuals for home delivered meals. A special emphasis is placed on serving low-income people, minorities, the frail elderly and those people with nutritional needs. At the present time The Woodford County Senior Citizens Center delivers up to 40 lunches five days a week to seniors in town as well as those living in the county. Each meal costs the center $3.51. Donations for the meals are accepted, but not required. The United States government will even match a certain percentage of financial donations. On April 29th, I ask that you dig deep into your pockets and find a little extra money to put into our offering plate. Pisgah currently has two teams entered: The Competition will be defending their Championship title under the Captainship of Sue Fosson and another team (yet to be named) is registered under Captain Denise Lutz. Talk About a SUGAR RUSH! Wow! Have you ever seen so much candy?! The donations just kept pouring in! Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make the Easter Egg Hunt a tremendous success. Afterwards, the children were turned loose to find nearly 2,000 eggs hidden by the youth group! Let s hope groundskeeper Bob Keller doesn t spend the next few months finding super sneaky eggs! Bring your rakes and cleaning supplies, and together we will roll up our sleeves and CLEAN! Donuts will be provided. Age appropriate projects will be provided. All we need is you. Please come help!!!
