From Your Regent: Deb Rowekamp We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop. When you read Mother Theresa s quote you realize, great things are accomplished when members work together to pool their talents. As we start the new CDA year, please reflect on your talents and how to best use them for the good of the order. If you are unable to attend a meeting, share your interests with a CDA officer or Circle of Love Chair so that we can be sure to involve you in those projects that are important to you. When you review the annual program, you will note some changes have been implemented this year to simplify projects that we do. These changes were made after listening to the women who chaired events and CDA members. The goal of making these changes was to allow the members to Serve the Lord with Gladness. ~Deb District Deputy: Barb Hennessy Hello CDA sisters of Court St. Charles, #1791. I want to introduce myself to you since I have been appointed to the position of District Deputy. I grew up on an apple and chicken farm in Wisconsin with two sisters and two brothers. I graduated from Stout State University with a degree in Home Economics Education. After teaching for two years, my life in Minnesota began when I married a Minnesotan and started a family. I have four children, seven grandchildren and one great grandson. Eventually I became a Dietary Manager in nursing homes until illness required my retirement. Forty-three years ago, a friend I had worked with for many years in the Council of Catholic Women, asked me to join Catholic Daughters of the America s. A group of us traveled to Court Caledonia #555 where we were received in a joint Reception of New Members. As a member of Court Winona, #191 I have held several positions in my Court, including Court Regent, Legislative chair, Parliamentarian, Education chair and Habitat for Humanity Gummi Bear chair as well as others. I look forward to getting to know you at your meetings during the next two years. ~Barb Hennessy Page 2 Let no one ever come to you without leaving better & happier Be the living expression of God s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile ~Mother Teresa

57th Biennial National Convention will be held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota July 17-21, 2018 Court Chaplain: Rev. Fr. Timothy Biren The Lord be with you! As I write my first official column as a Chaplain for the CDA Court #1791, I find myself reflecting on what the Catholic Daughters mean to me. I grew up in Iona, Minnesota. The local parish of St. Columba had a very active Catholic Daughters group. I remember seeing them wearing their robes, initiating new members, helping with outreach in the local community and spearheading projects for near and far that had the Church s mission at the heart of their ministry. Sadly, with changing demographics, the Iona Court was dissolved, but nearby, the St. Ann s Court in Slayton was more than happy to welcome the remaining members. The St. Ann s Court continues to be a very active presence in their community and beyond. I was very happy to see Marlys Knuth (born and raised in my hometown and a member of St. Ann s Court) at the Minnesota Workshop hosted here at St. Charles Borromeo. She, and many other members continue to help the organization grow and continue to live out the CDA Mission. What a blessing for the Church. I already know that I will experience similar blessings here with the St. Charles Court. What a blessing to be named the Pastor of these three parishes by Bishop Quinn, and subsequently, becoming the Chaplain of our local court. My role will primarily be one as a Shepherd, by praying, celebrating the Sacraments and encouraging membership to the court as the Mission is continually lived out in new ways. While I will not always be able to be present at meetings, I support you, your mission and your work. Thank you for all you have done. Thank you for all you are doing. Thank you for being open to the Holy Spirit as you continue to move forward on this wonderful journey of faith! Blessings in the Lord, Fr. Tim Biren, Court #1791 Chaplain Page 3

Fr. Kurt Farewell After 7 years as our Court Chaplin and Pastor of St. Charles Borromeo, Holy Redeemer and St. Aloysius, Fr Kurt Farrell was assigned to St. Theodore in Albert Lea, MN. A farewell open house/potluck was held on June 18th at St Charles Borromeo. Court St. Charles purchased a wonderful cake to wish Father Kurt Farrell well as he starts his new parish assignment Summer Outing Deacon Paul Tschann and Court Mazeppa/Bellchester organized a pilgrimage to National Shrine of Philomena in Briggsville, Wisconsin on August 2nd. Members from Court St. Charles and Plainview were excited to have the opportunity to join the excursion. The 54 passanger chartered bus reached capacity quickly.. CDA members recited the Patriotic Rosary, sang songs and renewed friendships as we traveled to our destination. When we arrived at the shrine, CDA members attended a Communion service and had the opportunity to venerate the First Class Relic of the Saint. Susan Hilliard, caretaker, shared stories regarding Saint Philomena. Saint Philomena is the patroness of previously impossible cases. Susan shared that Saint Philomena is an active saint whom she credits for assisting her to paint her portrait. Time at the shrine went quickly and soon it was time for lunch at the Pheasant Inn and wine tasting at Fawn Creek Winery. When we returned to St. Charles Catholic Church, plans were being made for the 2018 Summer outing. Since we exceeded the bus capacity, the possibility of adding an additional bus was discussed so we could invite woman from our parishes to join us. If you have suggestions for future outings, please share with the officers. Page 4

Back to School Drive Returning to school can be stressful for families when they realize that the required school supplies will cost $50 per child. During the month of August, Court St. Charles conducted a Back to School Drive to gather supplies needed by children to start school. Catholic Daughters and members of the tri-parish Catholic churches donated eight backpacks filled with crayons, magic markers, notebooks, folders, glue sticks, pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, and calculators. Gina Wimmer, Court St. Charles Education Chair and Fran Henry, Quality of Life Chair shared that more 240 items were collected with an estimated value of $ Imagine how the families stress was replaced with joy when their child received the required supplies from SE MN Resource Center. Membership Drive At the August meeting members in attendance were asked why they joined CDA. The majority of the members joined because they were asked. Have you shared the benefits of the being a member of Court St. Charles with friends and family members? After the Labor Day Holiday, letters were sent to 54 women in the parish to ask them to consider joining our organization. Contact Nancy Bambenek, Membership Chair with names of individuals that you would like contacted or perhaps you would be interested in contacting a few members as well. Olga Samaniego, National Regent Elect reminds members to pray for new members, be knowledgeable regarding CDA so that you can share the benefits of joining CDA and be proud that you serve God with other women. Court St. Charles invites you to attend the Reception of New Members that will be held on Saturday, October 7th during the 5pm Mass. A reception to welcome new members, friends and families will occur after the Mass. Plan to arrive early for the 5 pm Mass so that you can join CDA members reciting the rosary for Respect Life month. Gummi Bear Drive On Thursday, September 14th, thirty six boxes of Gummi Bears were delivered to Court St. Charles. The Gummi Bear drive to raise money for Habitat for Humanity will be held on CDA Sunday weekend, October 14th and 15th. Please contact Deb if you are able to assist after each Mass or if you would like to reserve Gummi Bears for Halloween treats please contact Deb. Minnesota is currently building Habitat for Humanity homes in Edgerton and Owatonna, Minnesota. Each home will receive $10,000 from MN Catholic Daughter when the homes are competed. The Edgerton home is incorporating green building techniques which has lengthened the time to build the house. Page 5

Junior Catholic Daughters JCDA members assisted with the Mother's Day flowers to raise money for New Life Family Services in Rochester. The organization supports life-affirming decisions for the unborn child. On May 13th, Mother's Day, JCDA Court members organized a Procession and May Crowning at St. Charles Catholic Church. To honor Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth, JCDA members and children of the parish, carried flowers while singing a Marian hymn. Keeping with tradition, the statue of Mary was crowned with beautiful flowers by JCDA officer, Anna Smith. JCDA president Roni Hunder hosted an ice cream social on August 16th. JCDA court members invited young ladies (age 6 through 18) of the triparishes to enjoy a frozen treat, and learn more about JCDA. Members discussed meeting times and events for the upcoming year (bake sale, designing T-shirts, assisting with adult CDA events). They are looking forward to the "annual" Daddy-Daughter Dance that will be held in January. October 28 & 29: Bake Sale after the St. Charles Borromeo Saturday 5pm Mass & Sunday 10am Mass. We are looking forward to working with our CDA sisters on this fun project. Bev Puterbaugh and Sandy Larson Minnesota Catholic Daughters Fall Workshop On Sunday, September 10th, Court St. Charles hosted MN CDA Fall Workshop which focused on God our rock. The meeting opened with members sharing their cornerstone strengths with woman in attendance from Court Winona, Caledonia, Plainview, Court St. Anne (Medford) and Court Saint Mary Peter (Mazeppa Bellechester). MN Court officers shared the Minnesota State Court goals for Spread joy and increase spirituality through our Courts and communities. This goal builds on the National CDA Theme to Serve the Lord with Gladness. Patti Johnson, Spiritual Enhancement states the joy occurs when you place Jesus first, Others second, and Yourself last. Reflect on how you will enhance your spirituality and service this year. 2. Promote intra court communication and connections. In Minnesota, there are over 2100 CDA members. Since many courts are in western or northern regions of the state, we rarely have the opportunity to interact with CDA members outside our region. Minnesota CDA officers randomly partnered CDA courts from different regions. The goal is to build bonds between the courts by finding shared interests, planning events, or writing CDA Pen Pals from the sister court. Court St. Justin #2020 from Mahnomen have been chosen to be our Court Pals. 3.Promote leadership skills within our members to fill local and state offices. In June 2018, St. Charles will be installing new members. Please pray whether you are able to provide leadership as a Court Officer. Court St. Charles members assist the MN State officers with the following Circle of Love projects: Legislative: Jan Hansgen Leadership Development: Nancy Bambenek & Denise Sackreiter Page 7

The Smile Train has been endorsed as a National Charity. Although the Smile Train is a great charity, pornography is one of the greatest threats to family and society. At a past meeting, a sister of Saint Francis shared that Sex Trafficking is a concern in southeastern Minnesota. Since we are near 90 and I-35, this has been a growing concern for the region. Court St. Charles provides $20 to each of the five National CDA Projects annually. Page 9
