2 What s coming up? Major Singles Our next championship event is coming up fast. The entry form is posted on the board, so add your name and make this a big event. Zone 10 Pairs Entries close on 7th February for State, Senior and Reserve Pairs. Would you please make sure names are put on board by that date Committee news Ralph Francis George Members were shocked, and saddened, to learn of the sudden passing of Ralph on 19 January, 2018 at the very young age of 62. He passed away less than 2 weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. Ralph joined PHMBC in January 2014, and in a short time became involved with the running of the club, firstly joining the Management Committee as one of the three general committee members, then being elected as Vice President in This role entailed the position of Chairman of the Match Committee, one of the most demanding positions on the Committee. His son, Matthew, said in his eulogy, that Ralph had always taken an interest in sports administration, starting when his sons played soccer, so Ralph's willingness to be involved with his new sport can now be understood. (It was also gratifying to learn that Ralph was a passionate West Tigers supporter, his philosophy being that the Magpies always won, whilst the Tigers always lost. It is a sentiment I share - KB).

3 In his business life, Ralph was involved in administration and HR, and this background was of great assistance to the other members of the Committee. With his bowls, we will be "fence sitters" and voice no opinion as to who was the better bowler - Matt or Ralph - but there were occasions when they were teamed together when it was difficult to work out who was supposed to be "skip". I think that we can only work on the principle that "a good skip does what his lead tells him". The respect with which Ralph was held by members was evidenced by the large number of members from both the Men's and Women's clubs who attended Ralph's funeral and formed a guard of honour as his casket entered the chapel. The Committee is extremely thankful to those members for their attendance. Ralph's passing will leave big shoes to fill in both his family life, and that of PHMBC. To his wife, Gayle, and sons Matthew, Nicholas and Mitchell, we again extend our sincerest sympathies on Ralph's passing. Ken Byatt On behalf of the Committee and Members of PHMBC, and members of PHWBC State Pennants The 10 rounds of state pennants commence on Saturday 28 April 2018 and conclude on Saturday 14 July Last year, we entered 4 sides in the competition. We wish to do the same this year, but currently we only have 53 of our members interested in playing, which is 7 players short of the required and sensible number to enter a fourth side. The pennant selectors would greatly appreciate hearing from any of our members who are prepared to commit to playing at least 8 games in this year s competition. It would also be helpful if players would, as early as possible, record on the notice board any Saturdays they are unavailable. Peter Nolan on behalf of his fellow pennant selectors, New format triples TAT, as it was known, is now a thing of the past and is being replaced by a modified event which: Is no longer Turn Around but regular 3 Bowl Triples. Consists of 2 games of 12 ends both played in the morning, then lunch, raffle and presentation of prizes. The day will be finished around 2.00pm latest. Is now graded with a minimum of 13 points (based on 2017 gradings). Has had prize money increased from $900 to $1,155 with prizes for 1st to 7th place. This is the first of the six events to be held this year and it is at our club. We need your support. We will not be sending information to other clubs before 14th February 2018 so all our members will have a chance to get in an early entry form and be assured of a game. Please see the board for full details. Kind Reagards Warren Phillips Match Committee
