Council Minutes & Matters June 10, 2013 Council minutes for regular meeting held June 10, 2013 meeting was called to order by president Scharff. Those present: pastor Tim Glendening, Ed Stahla, Ann Hagan, Rod Renken, Matt Albrecht, Dennis Wilken. Those absent: Lois Terrell, Todd Grabenstein, and Alice Schoene. Financial report and treasurers report was given by Ann in Alice absence as follows: For month of May, 2013: Current giving: $ Current expenses: Net over (under) ( ) For the year to date: Current giving: $ Current expenses: $ Net over (under) $ Rod moved and Ann seconded to approve the giving report with all present voting to approve. Dennis moved and matt seconded to approve the financial report, with all present voting to approve. Mission launch: Rod reported cotton candy machine to be set up with Luther League to potentially sell at walk down medina. Christian education: pastor reported Amy Meyer will take over wings Program with help from Dorothy, Sandy Dannehl, Kim and many others. Jeff noted much success with vacation bible school. Pastor stated 110 children showed on one day with daily total attendance varying. There were more than 50 teachers and helpers. The kids came from many surrounding towns, including Overton, Smithfield, Elwood, Immanual, Westmark, and all did a fantastic job. Bill and Martha ford noted great success and stated they would be back next year. Pastor reported, Marty had ordered envelopes for visitor mailing. Next year the visitor is to be on line with copies at the church for people that don t have computer access. The visitor will also be posted on the church website. It is noted that this should cut church costs. The publication date for the annual yearbook is to be moved to Feb. 1, such that more information can be included therein. Membership transfers James Ford transferred out and, Vivian Vonloh transferred in. Moved by Dennis and seconded by matt to approve transfers. 4

Executive session. It was moved by Ed and seconded by Dennis to go into executive session, to discuss matters which may be detrimental to the character and reputation of a person or persons. Property committee: Ed stated all but two faucet strainers have been removed soaked for days in CLR, brushed with tooth brush, and reinstalled. A vice grip will be necessary to remove the remaining two. All agreed that the cemetery looks very good after the May 19, 2013 workday when 25 to 30 people showed and worked most of the day. For Blue Jean Sunday 51 people attended for an outdoor service on a beautiful sunny calm day with the sermon and singing at the picnic tables just north of the church. Pastor reported all ceiling fans in the church are working except one, which will be returned. All other fans seem to be working good. The new chairs are to be arriving about the end of June. The Waggoners Company from Kansas are to give a bid to recover the fabric on the pews. Janean planted grass on north side of church, with Danny High replacing some sprinkler heads. Pastor noted he fixed the dishwasher in the parsonage, and three doors were replaced on the church with rod noting there should be closures on the doors, which will be done. Memorial pictures are to be displayed in the swinging frames, with pictures and credit for gifts, for public view. It is noted that the church is getting a number of memorials. Two 110 volt air conditioners at $135 each are to be purchased for the second floor of parsonage with Dennis moving and Ann seconding with all present voting aye. Pastor investigated phone charges for church and parsonage noting Verizon has a $20 and $20 charge. Frontier presently charges $130 per month. Frontier, the present carrier, states the fine print includes a clause that the land line has an automatic renewal, when pastor advised he had not signed anything in a couple years for frontier service. Ann recalled frontier gave the best deal at the time. Verizon does not have a phone book and does not list phone numbers anywhere. If the land line is cancelled yellow page and white page listings would not occur. It was agreed that Ann would do some checking and report back. Cemetery committee: all stated the cemetery looks very good. Women of hope: reported the shower went very well, that the Smithfield fall festival is coming up Oct 12, and that quilt day will be next Thursday. Worship: the online wedding came through very good. Old business: the stained glass windows, recently installed above entry doors look very good. Rose Wilken, who gave funds in memory of her husband, will be contacting Jo Wieland the maker, who generously agreed to charge for cost of materials only for the beautiful work. There has been a new Memorial given from Esther Stehl. 5

Parade float: Jeff noted he got this all taken care of. The kids train is to be used for the Bertrand parade. General discussion occurred about redoing the pews. Matt will get bids from service master and Cozad carpet cleaning for cleaning carpets in the church. Meeting adjourned with the Lords Prayer about 10:00 p.m. Next meeting July 8, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted by Ed Stahla Vice President In Council Secretary Lois Terrell s absence It has come to the attention of the council that the minutes that members receive each month in the visitor are minutes that have not been reviewed or approved by the council, since the council does not meet until after the Visitor is mailed each month. Rules of procedure would indicate that the minutes should not be mailed out until approved by the council. This is something that has been done for years. Seldom is there a problem with the accuracy of the minutes, but in an effort to eliminate any inaccuracies or unforeseen problems, the council will be looking at a remedy or remedies for this situation. If you have any concerns, please contact me or any council member. Jeff Scharff Council President Hope Supper Club Sunday, July14 at Mulligans in Oxford at 6:00 pm. If you need a ride please call the church ( ) or Jack Wieland ( ). 6

The Stain Glass Windows about the church entry doors & windows are in memory of Eugene Wilken. Jack and Joann Wieland designed and made the windows. Raymond Renken assisted Jack with the installation. Thank you, Rose Wilken 7

Words of Hope How much longer? Are we there yet? Familiar words as families depart on much awaited vacations, weekend trips to the lake or just a jaunt to the Big Apple for some needed R & R. Impatience is part of every child s emotional DNA. What parent hasn t been asked multiple times, How much longer? Unfortunately, impatience can often turn to skepticism in adulthood like when skeptics ask, How much longer until Jesus returns? I thought you said He was coming back to earth. If people were asking that question in the first century how much more cynically do they sometimes ask it after an additional 1900 years? 2 Peter 3:4 tells us Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. How should we respond when people question the fact of the Second Coming of Christ? When the prophets predicted His first coming it was hundreds of years before He appeared. But, He did appear. And since the same prophets predicted His Second Coming we have no reason not to take them at their word, regardless of the passing of time. Jesus own words are our reason for certainty in the face of skepticism: Let not your heart be troubled I will come again. Be certain today of His return one day. Thanks be to God. <>< Pastor Tim COATS, COATS, COATS Bible School was AWESOME, but a lot of coats were left behind. If your child is missing one please come and check Hope s coatroom. 9

Thank you Watt Wilken, Riley Stehl, and their families for helping Raymond and Janet Renken mow the Yoder Cemetery before Memorial Day. 10
