1 September 2017 From Hope Secretary From time to time I will have notes left on my desk for many reasons. Several times the notes are not signed by anyone. On July 30, 2017 I found an unsigned note on my desk asking that I post something on the calendar for & Luckily I was able to figure out what the message meant. There are times I do have questions about the notes on my desk, but if they are unsigned I am not able to help do what is asked of me. Please sign or even initial your notes. I do want to help in any way I can. Thank you for your help, Marty Dear Hope Lutheran Church, Thank you for donating $1, to Feed My Starving Children on July 28, 2017 at the EA Holdrege, NE Holdrege Area Mobile Pack event! Your gift has provided 5,359 nutritious means to those who are desperate for food. Thank you for handing hope to them in Jesus name. The food funded through your donation provides a critical foundation for a child. It is the first step toward a hope=filled life for them and their families. They rely on you to provide MannaPack meals so they can focus on becoming self-reliant. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for hearing their cries and being a beacon of hope to God s kids. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. - Hebrews 10:23 Until all are fed, Mark Crea Executive Director/CEO It s time to put on those cooking, crafting, and baking mitts. The Smithfield and Bertrand events are coming up quickly. We need everyone to help raise money for the Women of Hope activities and our students scholarships. In the past years we have sold our famous noodles, jellies, aprons, hot dish mats, dish cloths, breads, quilts, scarves, cookies, candy, pies, cakes, breads, garden produce, individual bags of goodies, purses, handmade craft items, hats, pickles, quilts and more. Please help by bringing items to Smithfield and/or Bertrand the morning of the event or contact Dorothy B., Kathy W., or Janet R., if you have any questions. Choir Starts Wednesday, September 20th at 7:30 pm

2 Council Minutes & Matters August 14, 2017 The Hope Lutheran Church Council met on Monday, August 14, 2017 for their regular meeting. David Ford, President, called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm. Council Members present were Joann Wieland, Ann Hagan, Alice Schoene, Kathy Weber, Sheri Seitz, Callan Dahlgren, Marlene Evans, and Pastor Tim Glendening. Gary Wilken was absent. Marty Secrest was a guest in attendance Pastor Tim led devotions from Psalm 29:11, followed with prayer. Minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed. Joann Wieland motioned to approve the minutes as written with Alice Schoene seconding the motion. Motion carried. Public Input Joann Wieland suggested that the council meetings be recorded and the recordings be retained for a period of time, such as one year, for example. Joann offered to research the options of recorders for purchase. There may be a recorder already available to use for this purpose and, if so, will be considered first before moving forward. Joann Wieland brought forth a concern. Due to lack of information, no action was addressed. The family of Marian Bennett has made contact in regards to a memorial gift they have chosen and inquired of additional memorial options for consideration. A request was received to look in to the possibility of a four way stop sign at the intersection of Road 436 and Road 741 due to traffic and safety concerns. The request will be directed to the Gosper County Road Superintendent, Michael Snyder. Ann Hagan will contact him. The Financial Secretary s Report was presented by Alice Schoene. A correction to the Memorial Designation detail was made. Ann Hagan motioned to approve the Financial Secretary s Report as corrected. Kathy Weber seconded the motion. Motion carried. The Treasurer s Report was presented by Ann Hagan. For the Month of July: Current Giving: $ Current Expenses: Net Over/(Under): (294.61) At this time, David Ford noted the church utilities line item and reported that Black Hills Energy had repaired and moved a gas line due to a gas leak. The leak was detected after Ann Hagan s question of the gas usage billed on the statement. The budget shortfall was discussed. Callan motioned to adopt the Treasurer s Report. Sheri Seitz seconded the motion. Motion carried. Mission Launch Joann Wieland reported that the League is planning a special function. The League members would like to attend the Annual Meeting in July 2018 in Des Moines, IA. Christian Education Ann Hagan reported on Confirmation Camp attendance, the beginning of Confirmation Classes and Wings on September 13 th, Rally Sunday on September 10 th for Sunday School students. Pastor mentioned that an Education Meeting was held and there are openings for Sunday School teachers yet to be filled. The curriculum and material for the Wings program is also being compiled. There was a great turnout of youth for the Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack in Holdrege. Pastoral Report A letter was received from Cinde Wendell in regards to memorial gifts available in memory of Robert Hock. The family desires to enhance the playground area at the church with additional playground equipment to be added to the equipment already in place. Callan Dahlgren made a motion to establish a playground fund to be funded by donations or memorial funds designated for that purpose. Sheri Seitz seconded the motion. Motion carried. Joann Wieland moved to ask Cinde Wendell to form a research committee and to be the chair of that committee. Ann Hagan seconded the motion. Motion carried. DeBra Dyer has requested to remove her membership at Hope Lutheran. Alice Schoene moved to accept DeBra Dyer s request to withdraw her membership at Hope with regret. Kathy Weber seconded the motion. Motion carried. Pastor Tim provided each council member with material he received at the Leadership Conference he attended. He explained the purpose of a survey in Assessing Our Progress In Growing an Intentional Disciplemaking Culture. He asked that each council member spend some time in personally assessing and completing the survey which should be returned at the next council meeting. Ministry Miles were submitted for reimbursement of 320 miles for $ Information was received for the outdoor bulletin board from Stewart Signs. The sign carries a lifetime warranty and is shipped to our location. The base preparation, installation and wiring is the purchaser s responsibility. A motion was made by Callan Dahlgren to approve buying the sign from current or future donations or memorial gifts at a cost of $ in addition to materials and installation costs. Kathy Weber seconded the motion. Motion carried. The vinyl LCMC logo can be added to the highway signs at $18.00 each. Sheri Seitz moved to order the logos required for each of the highway signs. Kathy Weber seconded the motion. Motion carried.

3 Minutes continue: Yanda s in Kearney was contacted in regards to the microphone audio issues. The current packs are obsolete so the option is to purchase a new Lavalier Wireless Microphone Pack at a cost of approximately $ per set. We currently have two sets with the second set being used for funerals, the Christmas program, etc. The Audio Fund is depleted at this time. Further research for funding will be made. Joann Wieland motioned to purchase one or two Lavalier wireless microphones at approximately $ each, depending on the funds available. Kathy Weber seconded the motion. Motion carried. Water is still leaking into the basement on the north side of the church to the west of the steps. It is believed that a concrete slab may need to be run in that area to alleviate the problem. Cemetery Committee The cemetery directory has been repaired. Women of Hope - Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm. They will be making noodles on September th and September th for the craft shows - in Smithfield on September 30 th and Bertrand on October 21 st. Worship Committee Services are planned until September. Old Business Contact with the Parish Ministry Committees has yet to be made to discuss the performance objectives. The carpets in the sanctuary, narthex, hallway and office were cleaned on August 14 th. Use of Sola Publishing s Online Resources was discussed. The meeting adjourned with The Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Marlene Evans, Council Secretary Words of Hope 1 Chronicles 29:15 For we are sojourners before You, and tenants, as all our fathers were; our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no hope. If you are reading these words then I can assure you, there is always hope. How do I know? Just by the very fact that you are indeed reading these words! The world, particularly our little corner of it here in Nebraska, has seen some miraculous things happen in the last few weeks, with the promise of more to come. You ve seen one of the rarest scientific events of the heavens in a total eclipse of the sun. In the next few days you will experience yet another heavenly phenomenon with the advent of a Blood Moon. You ve survived Y2K, the threat of nuclear war, blizzards, droughts, famine, and on and on. Yet here you sit, in the comfort, shelter and proximity of family and friends, reading these words and, for at least some, asking if there really is any hope. The comment that King David made regarding no hope refers to our inability to adequately return to the Lord what is rightfully His. In other words, all that we have and all that we are comes from God and when we offer our pitiful tithes back to Him we are merely returning to Him what He has allowed us to use for the brief shadow of time that we call our lives. So where does our Hope come from? We turn again, as always to Holy Scripture, searching, seeking wisdom. We find it in the words that Isaiah spoke and recalled for us in the Gospel of Matthew 12: BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL is WELL-PLEASED; I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES. 19 HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT; NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS. 20 A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY. 21 AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE Thanks be to God for his precious Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Amen. <>< Pastor Tim

6 The picture below is an artist s conception of a new bulletin board sign designed to replace our current one. This project has been approved by the Council, pending receipt of funds to cover construction. A large memorial gift has already been designated to this project and donations are welcome to help complete this project. Details of this sign include changeable letters allowing for a weekly message, led lighting, very high quality polycarbonate covering that will not yellow with age, incorporation of bricks from our current sign and a fresh new look that will be much more user friendly. The total project will cost just over $5000 and no monies from the general budget fund will be used. If you are interested in more information or wanting to contribute to this project you may contact any member of the council or Pastor Tim. 9 Hope Playground Update At their August meeting, by request, the Council of Hope Lutheran Church voted to establish a Playground Update fund for memorials and other donations. Donations have already been given to this project and this information is being provided to encourage consideration by other members of the congregation. This fund is intended to add to and not replace the existing playground equipment which is part of our congregation s history and culture. Many have wonderful memories of playing on this equipment. Additional playground equipment is meant to enhance our current children s playground and provide future memories for our children, especially younger ones who are limited in their ability to use the current equipment.. In addition to setting up the fund, the Council voted to create a committee to research playground designs, costs, and other options for updating the playground equipment. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact Cinde Wendell at (308) Women of Hope This Month s Circle Meetings & Studies September 6 Elizabeth 9:00 am September 7 Lydia 2:00 pm Topic In Harmony with the Word Meet at the Bertrand Care Center Hostess: Darlene Forster Lesson Leader: Vicky Hunt Sunday School 9:00 AM No Sunday School during summer Sunday Worship 10:00 AM Road 436 Smithfield NE A Member of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ Phones: Office: Cell: hopelutheran@atcjet.net Communion is offered the 2 nd & 4 th Sundays Wednesday evenings: (See calendar for times) WINGS (K-6th grade) Confirmation (7 th & 8 th grades) Choir for singers of all ages
