April 2012 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin So That the World will Know New Hope AS KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS WE ARE THE HANDS AND FEET OF CHRIST WE ARE OUR BROTHERS KEEPER WE SAVE LIVES AND CHANGE LIVES Message from State Deputy, Don McBride Bear the Light of Christ April is already here! It amazes me how quickly this fraternal year is passing. We have only a few short months left before we finish the year, and it s time to rally to meet your council s goals as we approach the finish line. At the same time it s a great opportunity to take stock of what you ve accomplished so far, and prepare award applications for your council s events. You owe it to the members of your council to share the stories of your council s successes- and who knows, you may get the opportunity to represent our state at the international competition level, like last year s international award winners and runners-up from Kennewick 8179 (1 st Place Pro-Life), Colbert 8872 (5 rd Place Community), Vancouver (5 th Place Council), or Olympia 1643 (3 rd Runner Up International Family of the Year Ed and Dani Sauley). I am pleased to note that the membership efforts across the state are really starting to bear fruit. Last month I asked each council to bring in at least one new member per month, and each district to bring in at least four members per month. If we keep up the pace of March for a few more months, we ll achieve our intake goal for the year- and remember that every new member brought in through the remainder of the fraternal year, and his proposer, will earn a lapel pin of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We really need every eligible Catholic man to join us because we have a battle on our hands. Our efforts to place Referendum 74 on the ballot, and overturn the redefinition of marriage, are underway. Petitions have been distributed to every district deputy, with orders to get them in the hands of every grand knight right away. If you haven t received your petitions yet, let me know immediately. The bishops are counting on us to get these into the parishes. We have a few weeks respite because we are not gathering signatures on Palm Sunday and Easter, but we need to be ready to hit the pavement hard after that! If you have not already done so, please approach your pastor right away and ask for permission to gather signatures after Masses. The bishops have each sent a letter and a copy of a Q&A document which I have already shared with the Grand Knights and which is linked here: RefQAPastorsX.pdf Note that I heard from a few of the councils in the Spokane diocese a few weeks ago that their pastors had not yet received word from the bishop but I have been informed that the letter to the Spokane pastors went out the last week of March so all should now be up to speed. We have a special responsibility and opportunity in areas where there are parishes that do not yet have a Knights of Columbus presence. Grand Knights and District Deputies who know of nearby Catholic parishes without Knights need to contact the pastors of these parishes to offer our assistance. Ask the pastor for names of men in the parish who might be able to assist in coordinating the petition signature gathering. At the same time ask Father if he would like an ongoing presence of the Knights in his parish to assist his efforts. Guess what the men he has suggested as leaders for petition efforts are the very same men you should be inviting to join our Order. One of them could be your new Round Table coordinator, or might eventually become a charter Grand Knight if the parish is large enough to support a new council. As I said, we ll need every member we can get to win the upcoming battles. I ll periodically send more information to each Grand Knight about Referendum efforts so please stay alert and take actions as requested. If you are a Grand Knight and haven t been receiving my notices through the webmaster, please send an to webmaster@kofc-wa.org to update your contact information. It is vitally important that we have an effective way to reach all councils. (Continued on page 2)

Page 2 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Message from State Deputy Don McBride (Continued) A few last points about the Referendum effort if you have gathered completed petition sheets, please don t delay in sending them in. They should be mailed to Preserve Marriage Washington as soon as they have been signed by the petition gatherer. We want to tally the numbers of signed petitions on the Preserve Marriage website so we can track our progress toward getting this referendum on the ballot. And if you have donations to support the cost of the referendum effort, they can be either sent directly to Preserve Marriage Washington, or send it to the state council and we ll forward it. As you can imagine, the costs of preparing and distributing thousands of petition sheets is considerable, and the upcoming efforts to inform the public effectively about the value of marriage and the family will be extremely costly. We ll need a lot of funds to win this battle, and this is a battle our families and future generations can t afford to lose. Finally, I want to give an update on our efforts to stop HB 2330, the state legislative effort to require insurance coverage of abortions. I reported last month that we had stalled its progress, but that there was still a risk of action because of the extended legislative session. That risk is becoming a reality because of intense pressure from Planned Parenthood and NARAL to bring this bill to action this session. The foes of the Culture of Life are likely planning to bring this bill to the Senate floor next week following the passage of a budget likely Thursday afternoon. It is imperative that we continue to contact our legislators with phone calls or personal visits to express our opposition to this bill even if we have already done so. There is strength in numbers of tallied votes. Don t give up; we really can make a difference. Don McBride, State Deputy STATE SECRETARY MESSAGE First, let me say that the WSC 2012 Per Capita assessment letter was sent to ALL GRAND KNIGHTS in early January. I am sorry that a copy did not also go to the attention of the Financial Secretaries. Your PFH assessment letter from Vocations Chairman John Ehardt was also enclosed with that mailing. Second, we also sent an Insurance Survey requesting that you advise us of your planned fraternal activities for the year as this information is needed to underwrite the renewal of our liability policy. The survey is needed by the end of March so your prompt reply will be very much appreciated. Third, I m looking for the return of your convention delegate election forms so that we are prepared for the up coming annual convention of the members. We will look for all of you in Spokane this year get your plans made Now by returning the registration forms and making hotel reservations.! And finally, I need to settle the question about my mailing address. I did not want your council checks and other mail sitting by the street in the old fashion mailbox so I've rented a PO BOX; however, I continue to receive complaints of mail addressed to me that is returned. My postmistress tells me that if it does not have my name and address correctly written it will be returned. My address is... GEORGE CZERWONKA, PO BOX 1627, VERADALE, WA I've met with and phoned my postmistress many times and she tells me that everyone on her staff knows who I am, but any mail addressed as "State Secretary" or SS Knights of Columbus or SS George and variations thereof will be returned to you. I am sorry but simply note my name and it will work. Also, do not send mail to my old address in Cheney as we sold that home 11 months ago. And for your s...i have nothing but trouble with the alias system at statesecretary@kofc-wa.org and ask that you please use my personal address as wonkags@aol.com. Your kind attention is very much appreciated. I'll continue to look for your council checks, cards and letters. Fraternally, George Czerwonka State Secretary

Page 4 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Membership Director With a few months left, MEMBERSHIP is starting to heat up and many are making their way to their Council Membership Goal. We need to keep pushing for Membership growth now more than ever, in light of the recent attacks on our religious freedom. There are battles that we will need to fight in the years to come and we need to build our numbers to be prepared. Don't hold off. Ask that guy that you have been thinking about to join us! We will need his help in the future. The State Officers have noticed that many guys are interested in getting an "Our Lady of Guadalupe" pin that the officers have been wearing this year. Well the State Deputy is offering one of these pins to each new candidate and each proposer from now until the end of the fraternal year, so bring in a guy and you and your new member can wear Our Lady's pin with pride. Once upon a time, we used to do "Membership Blitzes". This year Supreme has abandoned that idea and prefers the idea of Recruiting days a year. Funny, when Blitzes were new, nobody in this State was doing them, or very few. Now that the idea was abandoned, I have heard more talk about Membership Blitzes this year than all of the previous years combined. I do not care if you call it a church drive or you call it a Blitz, now is a great time to have a "WHATEVER YOU CALL IT". And the best way to start a "WHATEVER YOU CALL IT" is to do a pulpit talk. I was at a Fourth Degree Exemplification in Kennewick last weekend and Grand Knight Larry Devlin gave an inspired pulpit talk to kick of their "WHATEVER YOU CALL IT" and I include it so that you can change it, copy it, and make it your own for your "WHATEVER YOU CALL IT". Grand Knight Larry gives all of you permission to use it as you see fit. As you might expect or have observed, our Council is extremely busy and this week-end is no exception. We had a Fish Fry Friday evening, hosted our District Master for a 4th Degree Exemplification to induct 50 new 4 th Degree Knights yesterday, and are inviting you to a KC Breakfast after all morning Masses today that will benefit the 6 seminarians from our Parish. In amongst all that, we Knights are standing alongside our Priests and Bishops to fend off the attacks against our Church, our faith, and our freedoms. This is no small matter as the attacks are coming at us from both the Federal and State levels. If you attended the It s About Life Conference that we hosted here a couple of weeks ago, where we were so blessed with the presence and wisdom of Bishop Tyson for the entire day, you heard him speak about these challenges and his resolve to uphold our Constitutional rights of the 1 st Amendment for Freedom of Religion. He is among the 200 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops who are standing united against the recent Health and Human Services mandate that is calling for all employers, including Catholic institutions, to provide insurance coverage for birth control, sterilization, and abortifacients. As Timothy Cardinal Dolan has said We have made it clear in no uncertain terms to the government that we are not at peace with its invasive attempt to curtail the religious freedom we cherish as Catholics and Americans. We did not ask for this fight, but we will not run from it. In fact, the Conference formally stated on Wednesday that they were making the fight against the mandate as their top priority. We as Knights of Columbus are standing firm and in concert with our Bishops on this issue. At the State level, our Legislature and Governor recently signed a redefinition of marriage into law allowing same sex marriage. The bishops of Washington State and the Knights of Columbus stand unified in their opposition to altering the legal definition of marriage because they believe it poses a grave challenge to the common good. The Knights of Columbus throughout the State will be working with our Bishops to gather the required 121,000 signatures for Referendum 74, which is the bill that was passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. The Referendum would then be placed before voters in November. A majority No vote would repeal the new law that redefines marriage. We should be receiving those petitions in the next few days and will have them available for you to sign and distribute. Again, we as Knights of Columbus are firmly standing with our Bishops on this issue. [Finally, I am here again this week to invite all the men of our Parish, 18 and older, to join us as Knights as we prepare for, and take on these incredible challenges we face. We have always been a busy Council but are now going to be working even harder to defend our faith and our Church as we stand united with our Priests in their resolve to deal with the issues before us. I hope you will give serious consideration to joining the 290 tremendous men of our parish who are quietly working very hard to make a difference for our Church, our Families, our Youth, and our Community. I, along with some other Knights, will be in the vestibule after Mass to answer questions and help you fill out applications. Thank you, for your leadership, wisdom, and support. And thank you all for your attention. Brothers, for the first time ever, the State of Washington is going to have a "MEMBERSHIP WORKSHOP" before the start of the State Convention. It will be held on Friday May 18th, 2012 at 11:00AM to 12:00PM in the Audubon Room. We have room for 90 Knights to attend. I asked and I am delighted to announce that our very own Supreme Membership & Program Coordinator, Patrick Maloney, is giving us an hour of information on Recruiting and on Mentorship. This hour should be a great way to start your Convention! It should be positive, fun and informative. For those of you who are less cerebral, we are having a raffle for a door-prize for those that attend the workshop! I can hardly wait to see you all there! KEEP GETTING GUYS & GOD BLESS YOU! Michael J. McGivney. It made a rather pleasant companion on the long drive from Vancouver to Seattle and return. Although I had previously read the book, having the life of our founder recounted to me again brought tears to my eyes as I heard stories depicting the heroic virtues of this holy priest. The whole story of Fr. McGivney his charity, his generosity his compassion will never be known in this life; suffice it to say that he truly was an extraordinary individual whose virtues we can all emulate within our lives and through our participation in the Knights of Columbus. It s a good read either version, either in hard copy or as the audio CD. I highly recommend Parish Priest for your reading consideration. Duane Vincent FDD PFN PGK Chairman, Fr. McGivney Guild Supreme s Three R s In the previous State Bulletin, you may have read the articles from our State Membership Chairman on recruiting members and from myself on how to retain members. The articles are two parts of Supremes three R s (Recruiting, Retention and Reactivation). The third part (Reactivation) is all inclusive with the other terms of reinstatement, readmission and reapplication. Each term has its own definition and I will explain these terms. Reinstatement is used only when a former member has been terminated for three (3) months or less. Readmission is used when membership has been termination exceeds three (3) months and up to seven (7) years. Reactivation pertains to inactive insurance members. Reapplication is used when an applicant has been suspended for more than seven (7) years. In the various materials on retention published by Supreme, they recommend the use of the council retention committee as well as the Financial Secretary, Chaplains, Field Agents, District Deputies as well as the mentor and proposer. Supreme gives us a wide variety of tools to use to retain our members. These include Out of State Members (residing in our state), Former members list, Inactive Insurance members. Getting our Field and General Agents and District Deputies involved with the retention effort, searching the council roster for inactive insurance members. Asking the advice of your local pastor or chaplain when needed. Remember it is not about the Dues, its about the DO s Vivat Jesus, Andy Kraemer

Page 6 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Community Chairman GENERAL PROGRAM DIRECTOR My Brother Knights, the state convention is rapidly approaching and I wanted to remind you again of the due dates for your State Award application submittals (see p. 46 of the State Directory) relevant to the Community Program area. They are as follows: Due on April 1 are: George C. Turk, PSD, FVSW, Gift of Life Blood Donor Honor Roll (see Community/Awards/GeorgeTurkGiftOfLife.pdf for more info) Wade S. Walden, FDD, Platelets Hero's Award Honor Roll (see WadeWaldenPlateletsHeros.pdf for more info) Due on April 15 are: Community Service Award Please make sure that you get them to me by these due dates so they can receive proper consideration within the State Awards program at the State Convention in Vancouver. On your Community Service Award submittals, I would encourage to be as complete as possible and include pictures of your event. The winning submittals are usually well-written, typed, and very nicely done. If you have already sent in your report and feel you could have done a better job, there is still time for you to re-submit your report to me with any enhancements you feel would best promote your program. I also want to remind you of the need to get your Food For Families form submittals to me as soon as possible. If at least 35% of councils (~52 councils) in our jurisdiction report a qualifying program, our State can participate and receive our share of Supreme s current allocation of $250,000 for Food for Families. This is an increase of 10% over last year so we will really need support of every council with a qualifying program to meet this new challenge. So far, I received reports from 15 councils which reflects ~ 10% participation across the state or about 30% of our goal so we have a long way to go. The deadline for your submittals is May 15, 2011 so please get your forms to me soon. It would be really nice to get to our goal before the State Convention. Please use and submit the FFF form located on the State Web Site and get points toward your goal to be part of the pt. Club. God Bless and Vivat Jesus, Marcel P. Bergeron, PGK, FDD, PFN Holy Spirit Council State Community Chairman Community@koc-wa.org The Heat is on Worthy Council Program Chairmen if you are one of the few councils that didn t get these Award submissions in by April 1 st : (Family of the Year to Steve Snell Knight of the Year to John Rowley Herb Leibert Right to Life to Frank Tyson Harry Tucker Award to John Rowley George Turk Award to Marcel Bergeron and the Wade S. Walden Award to Marcel Bergeron Pro-Life Essay Contest to Frank Tyson) All addresses are on under Chairmen. The loss is your council s. Remember, for all that you do for all that your brothers do the only reward we have to give is appreciation. Recognition is one of the greatest forms of Charity, but the least given. So often we tell our brothers what a great job they do, but how often do we really do something to give them the recognition they deserve? Worthy Grand Knights are you listening? We hope so. With less than three days to go from this writing, we expected to receive a lot more than our chairmen are reporting. I can only pray more will arrive quickly. YOU CAN DO THIS ELECTONICALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME Remember, in order to win the Supreme International Award Status all Submissions go through the State first For those still working on submissions of Service Programs Awards You have only till April 15 th to have them in the hands of the Program Chairmen not in the mail in their hands. Church Joe Carson Council John Rowley Youth Bill Smith Community Marcel Bergeron Family Steve Snell Pro-Life Frank Tyson My best wishes to all and pray that every council can surely find members worth the effort to submit their names for each category. The lack of entries is never a shortage of talented hard working members who poured their hearts and souls into events all year, it s unfortunately that no one took the time to write it up. We know you do fantastic things all year long so please, put pen to paper and let us know quickly. God Bless, Fraternally, Pat Kelley, SW General Programs Director

April 2012 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 7 Life in Christ: Grace and Commandments Life in Christ: Grace and Commandments THE SECOND COMMANDMENT OF GOD You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. The second commandment commands us to respect the name of God. We should always use the name of God, of Jesus Christ, of the Holy Spirit, as well as the names of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the saints with respect. We must keep promises we make in God s name. Sins against the second commandment include the following: Blasphemy: using an expression insulting to God or religion. It also includes using God s name to cover up crimes, to enslave people, to torture people, or to put them to death. False oaths: Invoking God s name as a witness to a falsehood. Perjury: Making a promise in God s name without any intention of keeping the promise. Cursing: Using God s name to wish harm on others. Swearing: invoking God s name needlessly for trivial matters. Some God calls us by our christian name given in Baptism; the name of every Christian is sacred. The second commandment demands that we respect the names of others. Next month, we shall look more closely at the third commandment: Remember to keep holy the Lord s Day. Church Chairman MESSAGE FROM STATE ADVOCATE Dear Brothers, Brothers, The Our Lady of Guadalupe Image program is going quite well in the state. The number of Parishes that have been visited by the Images is growing and generally the program is being favorably received. One thing that bothers me though is that I have heard a few comments that there are not many Hispanic Parishes in an area, so the participation is not good. I must remind you that this program and the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Church wide miracle. This program is for all Parishes, not just the Hispanic Parishes. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas, which includes North America. She is also the Patroness of unborn children. With this in mind, I hope that all of those who are helping on this program will circulate the Images to all Parishes, regardless of ethnic makeup. By taking these Images to Parishes, you are providing the participants with the ability to receive many blessings. Please remember to submit your Church Service reports before the April 15 th deadline. Mail them to me at: Joseph Carson 104 S. Young Pl. Kennewick Wa Thank you for all you do. It's TAX-TIME! For us in our personal lives we all know what that means. For your council, this is the time that you get to tell the IRS that your Council is TAX-EXEMPT by fling the appropriate version of the Form 990. For most councils this is just a Form 990-N e-postcard. See the requirements below. If your council fails to report the correct Form 990 for three consecutive years, then you end up having to re-apply...costly, TIME-CONSUMING AND ANNOYING. I'm sure those 13 Councils still trying to recapture their Tax-Exempt Status would agree. Council gross receipts $50,000 or less file 990-N e-postcard Council gross receipts $50,001-$199,999 file Form 990-EZ Council gross receipts $200,000 or greater, or total assets in excess of $500,000 file the long Form 990 All the Resolutions that were submitted for the State Convention are now in the State Secretary's possession. Instead of incurring the cost of mailing the Resolutions to each Council, we have included them in this month's bulletin for everyone to review. YOUR COUNCIL WILL NOT BE MAILED A SEPARATE COPY! Finally, I am really looking forward to the State Convention this year. I always enjoy catching up with all of the great friends that I have made in the Knights of Columbus. Vivat Jesus! Joseph Carson God Bless You All & See You Soon! Bob Baemmert-SA

April 2012 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 9 District Deputy Director Message Worthy District Deputies, The last three months have been a busy time for you as District Deputy. I wish I could lighten your load and make the job a little easier; but, as much as we try, something comes up that requires your attention. The next three months do not look any easier. With that said, thank you for all the efforts you are making. It is greatly appreciated by the State Deputy and me as Director. My message this month is not only a big thank you but also to encourage you. We have three months to meet the membership goal set by Supreme for the Washington jurisdiction. The number of new members may seem high, however, if we break it down to what is required from each council, it is a very small number. There are 151 councils in Washington State. If each council would recruit 3 new members a month we would meet our membership goal. Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs. (Henry Ford) Another subject we have written about is the submission of Forms 365, Audits, Surveys, 1 st Degree Form 350C, Columbian Award and all the applications for State Awards which may lead to Supreme Awards. (We had 3 last year). The list is found on page 55 of the State Directory. The formation of a 2 nd Degree team in each district is just as important as having 1 st Degree teams. As you know, the requirement for upgrading members to the 2 nd Degree falls on the District Deputy. So it makes sense that the District Deputy have a 2 nd Degree Team and not have to depend on another district. It may take time to form a team. Keep talking it up until you can say, yes, my district has its own team. Congratulations to all the District Deputies who have formed a team for their district. I know it was not easy, but you were persistent. Most of the important things of the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. (Dale Carnegie) Keep up the important work that you are accomplishing and remember the slogan is: Get er done, and You can do it. We don t give up, or give in to failure. We push forward to the Winners Circle not the Losers Circle. Don t fall back; fall forward. Thanks to all of you. John Wallace DDD St. Joseph, Pray for us.

Page 10 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Family Chairman s Message Family of the Month - Your Council s Hall of Fame My fellow Knights, it s often easy to forget to thank the people that have helped us out along the way, we cannot forget that the past and future success of our councils is dependent on the support, assistance and guidance of our brother Knights. Our greatest vision should include the ability to identify the people who have been positive influences on us and our councils. We must then make it a priority to let them know our gratitude through the recognition of receiving the Family of the Month Award. So here s my challenge to you. Sit down today, make a list of the people who have been a positive influence on your council, and thank them. I can promise that you will make somebody s day if you go out of your way to publically say thanks for their great service. The people who we take for granted the most are generally those individuals who are by our side the most. I can promise two things from completing this exercise. You will not only make somebody else s day, but you will also make your own day. That is the power of a simple thank you. The Family of the Month Award connects in life-changing ways; it becomes a powerful ripple effect that touches families, communities, and your council. The Award showcases our Order s integrity, boldness, charity, and compassion. While these virtues are a part of our logic, they are simply the art of stating truths certified by faith, so use the simple art of words and thank them, these men of your Council s Hall of Fame. Please remember GRATITUDE IS AN EXQUISITE FORM OF COURTESY. FOOD FOR FAMILIES PROGRAM Imagine going hungry, right here, in the wealthiest country in the world. It hardly seems possible but it's true. The reasons are many job losses, stagnant or declining wages, escalating costs and high medical expenses. The fact is 49 million Americans are at risk of hunger. That's one in six Americans, and many of them are children and the elderly. And that's where Food for Families Program comes in. Hunger is an issue year-round and can be especially critical in the spring as post-holiday volunteer efforts and supplies typically diminish. While many believe that those affected by hunger are confined to small pockets of society, in reality, one in six Americans are struggling with hunger. A child going hungry in this country is indefensible! The challenge we face today is to activate people on issues of hunger in our communities- specifically childhood hunger. By joining together in the Food for Families Program, we will raise awareness and strengthen our communities, our potential and our capacity to make a difference. You must remember that Those living in poverty often have little or no chance to escape from the economic situation into which they find themselves. I think it would be true to say that most of them have some hidden scars, they are like turtles without shells; Food for families is their best chance for a new beginning! Their looking at you with those eyes, please don t turn away! LET S MULTIPLY THE LOAVES! STEVE SNELL, FDD, PFN, PGK -- STATE FAMILY CHAIRMAN

April 2012 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 11 Tootsie Roll Program Sports Chairman (Free Throw) I am getting Council Chairman Report forms and if you haven t turned in one, get it to me and start the program. It only takes a couple of minutes. The long work at updating our manual will be finished by the time this Bulletin is published. We have opened up the organizations approved by Columbus Charities to Help People with Disabilities. I think you will be happy with the change. From the councils that participated, all organizations that requested grant funds, would have qualified this coming year. We have also included a banner order form. How this works is you fill out the form with the desired information you want on the banner. It is pretty straight forward, but look at it closely to reduce the back and forth communication. The banners must remain consistent, except your custom request, so they will have to come through me to take full advantage of an approved expense. They can be custom made, but most information will be standard. The cost is $65 up front and the banner will not be shipped until payment is received. This amount will cover the cost of the banner, tax and shipping. The check needs to be made out to Knights of Columbus Council 1643 and send to me (address below). Make sure you put banner in the memo section of the check. It is not mandatory that you order banner(s), but any cost will be taken from funds you raise. After the drive, it will cost your council nothing. I expect a great year. With your help, we will raise much more than our goal of $150,000. Countless individuals with disabilities will benefit from your efforts. God Bless! and quoting a noted scholar, Let s get er done. Kim Washburn State Tootsie Roll Chairman Kim Washburn SILVER KNIGHT AWARDS Congratulations to the following Knights who received the Silver Knight Award recently On Saturday March 24th, the Knights of Columbus free throw championships were held in sunny Yakima. 24 Page 24 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Wayne C Hogan, VSM. PSD State Ceremonial Chairman There are only three months remaining in this fraternal year. Have you reviewed the status of your council? Has your council achieved its membership and insurance goal? Has your council achieved all the requirements for the Columbian Award and has it or will it be submitted to Supreme? If your council has achieved these requirements or will achieve these requirements prior to the end of this fraternal year, you are to be congratulated on your council s accomplishment. Before you spend time locating a place in the council hall for the Star Council Award there is one more requirement for the Star Council award and if you do not achieve this requirement your council will not receive the Star Council Award. We have been discussing this requirement since the Summer Leadership Meeting. This new requirement is the ceremonial requirement instituted this fraternal year. It is printed on the Form 450C. COUNCILS MUST CONDUCT OR PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST FOUR FIRST DEGREES WITHIN THE FRATERNAL YEAR TO QUALIFY FOR THE STAR COUNCIL AWARD. COUNCILS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONDUCT FIRST DE- GREES AS OFTEN AS NEEDED TO ENSURE THE TIMELY INITIATION OF EVERY MEMBERSHIP PROSPECT. WHILE THE FIRST DEGREE MAY BE CONDUCTED BY READING THE PARTS, THE MEMORIZATION OF THE DEGREE REMAINS THE PREFERRED METHOD. DEGREE TEAMS THAT HAVE COMMITTED THEIR PARTS COMPLETELY TO MEMORY MAY BE CERTIFIED BY THE DISTRICT DEPUTY ON FORM NO. 543, NOTICE OF CERTIFICATION OF FIRST DEGREE TEAM. As I have written in the state bulletin, the only competition for the Star Council Award is with yourself. Every council in Washington can and should receive a Star Council Award. Ask yourself do I want my council to receive the Star Council Award? If yes, then make it happen. There will be a major change, effective July 1, 2012 in the way Washington conducts second and third degrees. The second and third degree will no longer be conducted together. This was announced at the District Deputy Mid-Year Meeting on December 3, 2011 and at the Regional Meetings. To prepare the Washington Third Degree for , all district deputies will submit to the State Ceremonial Chairman (SCC), as soon as possible, but no later than April 15, 2012 their recommended third degrees. The SCC will prepare a proposed Third Degree Schedule and present it at the Washington State Convention. It will be coordinated with the district deputies and published in June Also, effective July 1, 2012 the Washington State Council will only publish the Third Degree Schedule. Each district deputy will schedule and publish the Second Degree Schedule for their district. The second degrees should be conducted on a weeknight, preferably following a council meeting. The second degree is about 40 minutes, plus limited time in the Antechamber. In order to have second degree candidates for the stand alone third degrees beginning in July 2012 district deputies are to coordinate with adjacent district deputies, schedule and conduct second degrees in May and June All district deputies are to provide the SCC, as soon as possible, but no later than April 1, 2012, the dates of their standalone second degree in May and June District deputies will provide the SCC with information on the Second Degrees to include the dates and times, locations, the Second Degree Team and honoree. This information must be provided to the SCC at least ninety days prior to the third degree using the Second Degree Ceremonial Exemplification Schedule. It is imperative that second degrees be frequently scheduled to insure second degree candidates for the third degrees. So far, this fraternal year, two third degrees were cancelled due to lack of candidates. The district deputies are responsible to ensure sufficient candidates participate in third degrees.

Greeting Caballeros de Colon, Hispanic Membership Wonderful results to report during the last few weeks, thanks to the Spanish, 1 st degree team of Seattle that conducted the exemplification in Bothell on March 25, for seven members of a new Mesa Redonda and to GK Michael McCloskey for his dedication in reaching out to Hispanic men to grow his council. In Vancouver a Spanish first degree exemplification was held on March 27 th, adding membership to this growing Mesa Redonda, very active for over one year, now planning to participated in a Latino resource fair, also sponsoring an event to honor Mothers on Mother s day with music, food and entertainment. The Caballeros de Colon banner will be displayed at both events. Wonderful recruitment results of Hispanic candidate at Holy Family Parish, Seattle, GK Steven Script, at St Thomas, Brother Steve Duncan, St Francis Cabrini, Lakewood, Brother Paul Swortz for their efforts in setting up a recruitment campaign, making way for my presentation to Hispanic faithful after the Spanish mass. Spanish mass is always standing room only; the Lord has provided us with a plentiful harvest. Our Holy Father s recent trip to Mexico and Cuba has opened the door for people of those countries to come closer to our Lord and in many ways have soften the hard hearted. The Hispanic community is growing, they are here to stay, soon 45% of Catholics in this state will be Hispanic and as it stands now they are the salvation of our culture as we know it due to declining birthrate in the Anglo community. Hispanic Priests can be found everywhere and they have a strong message for us all, bringing us closer to the Eucharistic Christ in the miracle of the Mass. Let us open our hearts to this culture that beings to this country the beauty of faith, family and love for the Holy Mother, our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas and the Knights of Columbus. Let s look at the possibility of scheduling a recruitment campaign in the near future, its fun and we get to build a community of fellowship in Christ with those who are around us but yet have not approached. Thanks to all Pastors who have received me with kindness and have been very gracious in providing help in these recruitment campaigns at their parish after the Spanish mass. Rev. Horacio added that he was a member GK but was not trusted with the sword for fear he may hurt someone. Most Pastors are member Knights if not they will be soon. Let us all join our Priests and Bishops in prayer for our church and for those who are determine to challenge our beliefs and our faith, may their hearts of stone come to know Christ. Viva Cristo Rey, Viva La Virgin de Guadalupe, Mike Calderon/Hispanic Membership

Page 32 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin April 2012 Wheelchair Program The American Wheelchair Mission delivers free wheelchairs to children, teens and adults without mobility or the means to acquire a wheelchair. Since 2003, Knights have sponsored the delivery of more than 25,000 wheelchairs around the world. We deliver brand new, high quality wheelchairs by entire sea containers. The brand new wheelchairs we deliver in 5 sizes (12, 14, 16, 18 & 20 inch seat widths) would sell for over $500 in a medical supply store, but because we ship by 100 to 280 wheelchair containers from the factories directly to the country of delivery, we can do this at an average price of $150 each. We estimate that each wheelchair delivered changes and improves an average of 10 lives! This program is not an annual event culminating at the State Convention. As soon as you can make a donation, please do so. Your donations need to be sent to the State Secretary, George Czerwonka. Global Wheelchair Mission is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. I want to challenge every council to help kick start this program by writing a $200 check and sending it to our State Secretary. If you accept my challenge, we will raise $29,800. This will get us our first container of wheelchairs and a balance toward the next. My brother knights, requests have come for wheelchairs. As much as we want to honor these requests, your help is needed. In order to honor these requests, we need to raise $16,500 in order to get a container of wheelchairs. Can your council/assembly make a donation? Can your council/assembly do a fundraiser, i.e. Wheelchair Sunday? Please look at your budgets and see if there room to help those with mobility issues. I pray that there is and some other prayers will be answered. Don t forget the side effect of this program, increased council membership. When you do the Wheelchair Sunday or other fund raisers, please be prepared with form 100 s.
