July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MAKING A DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE GEORGE H. CZERWONKA, JR. STATE DEPUTY WASHINGTON STATE COUNCIL (509) CELL (509) wonkags@aol.com Message from State Deputy My Dear Brothers in Christ...as we begin our journey together for the Fraternal Year, let me first promise to uphold the office of State Deputy and to serve you, the Washington State Council, as your duly elected State Deputy. I can tell you too that I was installed as your State Deputy on June 7 th at St. Mary s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. As we begin our mission together, I first want to recall my promise to Mary, our Lady of Guadalupe and our Patroness, to pray the Rosary as often as I can for her intercession to help guide us this Fraternal Year. I ask too for your Charity in giving your elected officers and all brothers the benefit of the doubt when we may not agree with them in word, deed or action remembering too that in Unity, we can do great things as a Fraternity of men associated together in an environment of Catholic companionship and brotherhood, dedicated to the vision and mission of Fr. Michael J. McGivney. Our Supreme Knights has stated that You are now the leaders of our great Catholic organization. My fellow State Officers and I did not rise to lead you as Warden, Advocate, Treasurer, Secretary and State Deputy without your participation. I have observed our work as Knights of Columbus and like you, I too have formed some thoughts and opinions on what we could do with more members limitless really given the time and talent of our Catholic brothers not yet invited to be Knights. Now some of you will already say that it is all about the numbers, when the fact is we are all about our Catholic teaching and traditions in supporting our priests and bishops. We are also about caring for the orphan and widow, unborn, disabled, elderly, children, less fortunate, and so much more in our Church, community, city, state, nation and world. And yes, we are called to evangelize too. What easier way to evangelize than bringing a Catholic brother and his family back into communion with us. Our good works speak volumes, but we could do so much more. Let us not become complacent and drop the ball at this time in our society as complacency is so against the teaching of Jesus Christ. So what do we do? The message of our Supreme Knight has been very clear; and, he has repeated it time and again. We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus. The State Officers and I have a responsibility to act as both a catalyst and resource for you and each council in the Washington Jurisdiction so you may achieve sustainable membership growth, provide opportunities for faith formation and leadership development so that our members will effectively serve their parishes and community. That is about as specific as I can make it. I trust that many of the elected council leaders will attend the Summer Leadership Meeting in Yakima the weekend of July at the Red Lion Hotel. If you truly can t make it to that meeting, I ll look to see that your appointed District Deputy visits with you soonest so that you too can have a successful term of office this Fraternal Year. Your District Deputy and District Deputy Mentors are attending the Summer Leadership Meeting so they can assist you with Communication, Planning and Organizational needs. I look to visit with you soonest too. I believe we need to truly improve our communication at every level in our Jurisdiction. In this age of texting, tweeting and spam, we ve become very unresponsive to the spoken and written word. So let us all agree that we must communicate with our members, councils and the Order all the way up and down the line! Do you recall the line, a one ringer? I remember it well and use it daily, sometimes falling over a chair in my haste. Let us not become complacent and think the next guy will answer the call. Take a look around you in today s society and tell me we don t matter. We are referred to as the Strong right arm of the Church for a reason. (continued on page 2)

Page 2 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Message from State Deputy So let s get started now with a few simple reminders 1. Communicate clearly our need for growth and use the phrase One Member per Council per Month! 2. Stay with the vision and mission of Fr. McGivney and the Order. 3. Plan in smaller short term increments for today, the week and month. 4. Delegate, monitor and measure where you are going to determine mid-course adjustments. 5. Seek opportunities to blend your works with Membership, Programs and Charitable activities the Tootsie Roll Program, Food for Families, Coats for Kids, Ultrasound initiative and so many more are great examples. You will be receiving a Day Timer from the Supreme Council at the Summer Leadership Meeting. Your District Deputy will get it to those of you that are not able to attend. And let me finish this first letter to you by saying, We are here to lead, support and guide you in our Catholic fraternal work. Take full advantage of all we can offer you so that your success will be a lasting legacy to those that will follow you. I remain Your servant in Christ Vivat Jesus! George H. Czerwonka, Jr. State Deputy Washington Jurisdiction Brother Knights, Message from State Secretary Welcome to the new fraternal year!!! Wow, that last year was a ride! Hope you attained your goals. I, for one, fell a bit short of a couple of mine...but hey, new fraternal year, new chance to make it happen this year. I plan to get started on some of those personal goals NOW...I will not be caught short this year. How about you? We don't have the luxury to wait - let's go out and get it done. Use last year as a learning point. What went right? What fell short? Evaluate, correct, get to it. I'm ready how about you? Thanks so much for all the work you have done in the past. And, thanks for your continued support of me on my journey as one of your leaders. This month marks the start of my time as your State Secretary. I am looking forward to new thing, continuing my learning process, and helping you and your councils where I can. Are you ready to attend the Summer Leadership Meeting that is fast approaching? You deserve to be there, your council deserves your attendance at this most important meeting. We have a good deal of information to share with you and look forward to helping you off to the right start in your new term as a council leader. Come join us...it is well worth your time. Look for the "First Six Months" letter by yours truly. That will help identify the things that need to happen in this first six months of the fraternal year. We all need to have a map for our success, please us this letter as part of that map. As always, call or if you have questions or need some other assistance. Vivat Jesus! 3 July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 3 THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED DAYS: THE INTENTIONAL PONTIFF STATE CHAPLAIN MOST REVEREND Blaise Cupich STATE VICE-CHAPLAIN VERY REVEREND Steve Dublinski Pope Francis is the hot topic of conversation wherever I go. People I meet on airplanes, at dinners, in parishes and on the street, not only ask me what I think of the new pope but they also tell me how excited they are about what he is saying and doing. If I were to choose one word which comes to mind to sum up the favorable comments about Pope Francis it would be "bridge builder." How appropriate for one of his titles "pontiff" or in Latin "pontifex" means bridge builder. As a bridge builder he is making connections. He is connecting with people personally, like the teens and the Muslim woman whose feet he washed on Holy Thursday. He is bringing people together, like the tens of thousands of people he greets in St. Peter's Square each week and the world leaders who visit with him. His outreach especially to the poor by selecting the name Francis is creating a fresh appreciation for the need of human solidarity. Francis is also making connections among the many issues which are too often polarizing. At his celebration for the Gospel of Life, the pontiff spoke with forcefulness about the need to protect the unborn and the poor, noting that our response to both equally tests our commitment to life. This is how he put it: "The goal of economics and politics is to serve humanity, beginning with the poorest and most vulnerable wherever they may be, even in their mothers wombs. Every economic and political theory or action must set about providing each inhabitant of the planet with the minimum wherewithal to live in dignity and freedom, with the possibility of supporting a family, educating children, praising God and developing one s own human potential. Maybe that is why there is such excitement about this new pope. People are encouraged that he is so inclusive, especially of those who are often marginalized and left behind. But, they also take heart seeing that the pope is reaching out to connect with them and their deepest aspirations. In his first one hundred days, Pope Francis gives every indication that he is well equipped for his new role as Supreme Pontiff. He is a natural at building bridges. by Bishop Blase Cupich Diocese of Spokane

Page 4 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 State Treasurer Message Message from the State Treasurer and Forms Keeper My Brother Knights, Thank you for electing me to move on to be your State Treasurer. It is a great honor and I am really excited about collecting your money, because I know how popular I will become doing this job. Just to make sure I m even more popular, the State Deputy has assigned me to oversee your Supreme Forms submissions. You guys are going to love me so much I m going to have to beat you off with a stick! Let s start with the Exemplification Fund. This one was created in 1993 to pay for 3 rd Degree Team travel costs. The idea was for the State to collect $7 for every new member brought into your Councils so that the cost of travel for the Degree Teams would be covered. With the recent changes in the Degrees and more 2 nd and 3 rd Degree Teams, travel costs are lower, but the Third Degree Medallion that all members receive and smaller travel costs still keep the fund at $7 per new member. So every time you bring in a new member you send the Washington State Knights of Columbus $7. Your council does not have to pay for new Priest members or any of the Four R s : Reinstatements, Readmissions, Reapplications or Reactivations. Please provide me that information when these exceptions come up so that I can credit your council appropriately. I included an Exemplification Fund spreadsheet so that you can check what you owe. I m thinking that maybe we can do this by providing the Financial Secretaries an e-bill monthly for this fund. That way we can keep this Fund more current. Let me know if you feel that this would be helpful. Next, this is a really important time of the year in terms of forms. The following forms are all due relatively soon and they have a big impact on the Councils. Report of Officers Chosen #185 due June 30, 2013 If this one doesn t get done, the past Grand Knight gets all of the new Grand Knights mail from Supreme. That makes for a real mess and an awful way to start the year. Service Program Personnel Report #365 due August 1, 2013 If you can fill in all of the positions listed on the form, great. If not, submit what you have and update it when you have more positions filled. This way you make the deadline and communication from Supreme will continue to move to those that you did include on the form. Semi-Annual Audit #1295 due August 15, 2013 Trustees, honor your Financial Secretary by doing your part on the audit team. You owe it to your council to complete these audits, so that everyone knows that financially, you guys are alright. Enough for now! See you all at the Summer Leadership Meeting and until then. 5 July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 5 General Program Director You new Grand Knights, DD s, Officer s, undoubtedly, feel this way? I know I do. This is not uncommon for someone who is committed to success. So much more is the reward when you look back one year from now and see what has been accomplished. Being the new Program Director, I was invited to Dallas along with our new State Secretary, Ed Parazoo and our new Membership Director, Tom Sokol, to participate in a seminar promoted and paid for by Supreme. It was a very busy weekend, but well worth it. I heard from Supreme what I have been waiting for, Membership and Programs are tied together. Visibility is created by Programs and Membership is needed for visibility. YES!!! We have the Featured Programs (Big 8) promoted by Supreme. Church-RSVP (Refund Support Vocations Program), Community- Habitat for Humanity, Community-Global Wheelchair Mission, Council-Special Olympics, Family-Food for Families (Reimbursement Program Refund), Culture of Life-Marches for Life, Culture of Life-Ultrasound Initiative, Youth-Coats for Kids, and these programs gain visibility for the Knights of Columbus, Nationally. However, you have your local concerns and they are most certainly visible in your community. No matter how big or small they are, they are important to your community and to us. One program that is easy and we all can participate in is the Tootsie Roll Drive. You know I couldn t finish an article without mentioning this most worthy program. Those that have participated know the benefits of this program, visibility gained and all the organizations that have benefited, to help someone handicapped, succeed to the best of their ability. I am proud to announce that Patrick Kerley (15143) has agreed to be the new Tootsie Roll Chairman. He has lots of energy and holds his age well. Let s see what he looks like in a year. The Monthly Service Report has been updated. Our State Deputy has changed the name to, The Grand Knight 1000 Club. It is much easier to cross the 1000 point mark, but most importantly, it is now a document YOU can use. It is designed to make your Columbian Report, RSVP and Food For Families Reimbursement Program Refund a breeze. All you need to do is spend 20 minutes or less each month to make it happen. Try it, you ll like it!!! PROGRAMS!!! This is one of the main reasons I became a Knight, to serve others and greater fulfill my Catholic obligations. My potential success is greater when operating as a collective, than it is alone. This is where the fun is. Ask yourself these questions, What if I would not have been recruited? Are the Knights of Columbus better off since I joined? Am I better off since I joined? Remember these questions when you are contemplating whether to ask a Catholic man to join the Knights. At the end of the fraternal year, after fighting the good fight, you will feel like this deer. What a difference a year will make. The State Officers, DD s, Directors and Chairman are here to make this your best year. Use us!!! Kim Washburn State Warden State Program Director Give Blood

Page 6 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Message from State Advocate My Brothers, District Master s Message Brothers, My thanks to all for the confidence you have placed in me by electing me to the important office of your State Advocate. Rest assured, all requests for information are held in the strictest of confidence and always approved by the State Deputy before being released. All business during my term will be conducted on a "need to know" basis. With the resources provided to me by my predecessor, now State Treasurer Bob Baemmert, the State Deputy, the other State Officers and our Supreme Representative, Pat Maloney, I feel confident that we can resolve issues in proper and expeditious manner. Looking forward to seeing you at the Summer Meeting and discussing your important topics as well as EIN numbers. Fraternally. We are at the end of the fraternal year, and what a year. We saw our District grow by 4 Assemblies, Our membership is through the roof and the overall health and prosperity of the 4th Degree has never been better. We have one more Degree this year and it is being held in Lacy. The details are in the bulletin and I hope to see all my Brothers there. It is also that time of year to get the form 186 election of new officers chosen. And it is time for the upcoming year planning, we have had a lot of success because of all the input from all of the brothers in the 4th Degree and I would like it to keep going. So please never hesitate to or call if you have an idea. Again my contact info is Eugene Daly kodiak98027@yahoo.com Pat Kelley-State Advocate FATHER MICHAEL MCGIVNEY GUILD The Father Michael J. McGivney Guild serves as a source for information about the life, works and spirituality of Father McGivney. The Guild distributes informational materials about him, receives reports of favors granted through his intercession and oversees the distribution of relics. Members of the Knights of Columbus are not automatically Guild members and must elect to join the Guild. To join the Guild, go to to register. Prayer for Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Thank You all for the work you do for the order and the 4th Degree. Eugene Daly Master 4th Degree Washington State KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS CRYING TEARS OF JOY It is not uncommon for me to cry on Sunday morning at the convention Mass when the necrology of Knights and their families are read; some of them have been dear friends for more than four decades. This year, I also cried on Sunday, but they were tears of joy, thanking Almighty God for his goodness to us. Choking back the tears, I explained to my Brother Knights that He does indeed answer prayers, but we tend to forget the operative phrase, Thy will be done. Friends, family, Knights of Columbus and military veterans along with their wives around the world have been praying for me and, God has indeed answered those prayers favorably. Despite the cancers that have invaded my body, I am in no pain whatsoever other than the normal pains of advancing age. This is God s gift to me and a testimony of His love for us. Duane L. Vincent FDD PFN PGK Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father

July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 7 Message from Membership Director Worthy Grand Knights and Brothers All, One Member, per Council, per Month "We have a moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus." Carl A. Anderson, Supreme Knight With that thought in mind your membership team has put together a membership program that will advance the Washington jurisdiction to the Circle of Honor". As stated in a recent leadership work shop that we start even and all jurisdictions are in the "Circle of Honor"; however, it is up to our jurisdiction to stay there, and the way we do that is by One Member, per Council, per Month". Our success depends on you, the District Deputy Mentors, District Deputies, Grand Knights and you, my Brother Knights to do your part. Too achieve the HONORS you must have goals. It all starts with One Member, per Council, per Month. The theme developed by the Supreme Council the past year and it is again being used this year and in future years. So what does this for the Washington Jurisdiction? At 155 Councils times 12 equals 1860 new members in our State. This is our GOAL! Keeping that in mind the leadership team has a few suggestions on how to achieve that goal. At the start of the new fraternal year during this normally slow July month, to give your recruitment efforts a jumpstart by participating in the Order wide "Officers Challenge." Under this challenge every council officer is urged to recruit at least one new member during July and another in August to set the example that recruitment is everyone's job. In addition to the Officers Challenge for July and August, we have a theme for July "For Those That Serve". Let us ask every Catholic Fireman, Police Officer, those serving in the Armed Forces and other First Responders to Join Our Order. The benefits upon death while providing assistance in the line of duty are tremendous for these members, simply for the payment of their annual Council dues. Let us remember our Supreme Knight s word in that we have a moral obligation to ask them to join our order. The first and perhaps the most important step in setting up a successful membership program is organizing your membership committee. Identify Knights in your Council that are display their dedication and enthusiasm. One of the biggest problems in recruiting is facing a young man who has many commitments. From his duties to his family and his obligation to his work, there are constant calls on his time. How many times have you heard the reply "I don't have much time to give to the Knights, so why should I join?" It's a common concern among many prospects that they just feel like they don't have the time to be part of the Knights of Columbus. Imagine if you were able to tell a man if he could only offer 24 hours a year to the Knights of Columbus he could make a positive difference in his community and church. The giving of 24 hours a year can be accomplished by several different activities within your community, church and council which include activities such as being an usher/greeter, Eucharistic minister, lector and praying at Sunday or daily mass for family, peace and Brother Knights. When you present the time commitment of joining the Knights of Columbus to a man in this manner, it doesn't seem as intimidating. Once a man becomes a Knight and experiences the reward of being a Knight of Columbus is, he will dedicate more of his time to the Order. The July theme is Officers Challenge and the August theme is FAMILY - recruiting our brothers, father, uncles and sons. Vivat Jesus Tom Sokol WSC Membership Director. NOTICE! NOTICE! NOTICE! The suspense is building and if you are looking for the report of Membership gains that you usually see each month, you are going to have to wait for the awards at the Summer Leadership Training in Yakima July 20th.

Page 8 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Ceremonials Wayne C. Hogan, VSM, PSD State Ceremonial Chairman As we begin the new fraternal year of , I congratulate the newly appointed district deputies and elected grand knights and council officers on their appointment and election. Know that you received your office because your brother knights and the WSC leadership have confidence in you and your ability to lead Washington to a very successful With your help, I look forward to a very productive year in ceremonials. However, before looking forward we need to acknowledge those outgoing district deputies, grand knights, council members and especially the first, second and third degree ceremonialists who made fraternal year a very successful year in ceremonials, recognizing we have some areas that still need attention. We had five outstanding first degree teams compete in the First Degree Team Ceremonial Competition, Spokane Council 8137, Kennewick Council8179, Olympia Council 1643, Seattle Council 676 and Bremerton Council At the State Convention the traveling award which has all the previous first placed teams listed was presented to Bremerton Council 1379, the first place council in the First Degree Team Ceremonial Competition, who will retain the award until the same time next year. The second award was presented to the council for them to retain and cites them as the Best of the Best in The team members and their positions are engraved. Also, each team member was presented with an individual certificate. We also recognized the top individual ceremonialists which were selected by their highest scores with individual certificate. For the Grand Knight position it is Mike Donohue from Seattle Council 676. For the Deputy Grand Knight position it is John Devine from Bremerton Council For the Chancellor position it is Tommy Rosati from Bremerton Council For the Financial Secretary position it is Ed Herbert, Sr. from Bremerton Council For the Warden position it is Ed Lapinski from St. Thomas More Council These three councils, Seattle 676, Bremerton 1379 and Spokane 8137 were recognized by these outstanding ceremonialists. We will continue this recognition again this year, however, with specially designed plaques. We hope to have them at the Summer Leadership Meeting. We had three districts; Districts 2, 8 and 33 achieve major accomplishments in the area of second degree. District 2, District Deputy Tommy Rosati, who was the team DD, was moving to Virginia. He recruited and trained his replacement. The new team DD, Mathew Hogg was certified as well as a backup Warden, Thomas Collier and two Financial Secretaries, Robert Casey and William Smith. District 8 s second degree team members who have served with distinction for many years retired. District Deputy Kurt Zimmerman reconstructed his district s second degree team. The team members are: District Deputy Kurt Zimmerman, Grand Knight Joseph Shea, Chancellor David Buckley, Warden Ed Cenzon, Financial Secretary Gregory Johnson and Inside Guard Scott Butcher. Their performance during the evaluation degree was outstanding and they were certified. District 33, Second Degree Team Captain Ed Broadhurst and District Deputy Dean Proszek recruited and trained the second degree team. The second degree team members are: District Deputy: Dean Proszek, Grand Knight: Ed Broadhurst, Financial Secretary: Ed Parazoo (State Secretary) Chancellor: Dr. Ramon Canto, Warden: Dwane Makinson and Inside Guard Ron Christian. The team conducted an outstanding evaluation second degree on May 30 and was certified. The team changed its name from Northeast Second Degree Team to SFC Wyatt Goldsmith Second Degree Team to honor a brother sir knight who on his third deployment to Afghanistan was killed in action on July 15, Also, in , District 15, District Deputy Renato Sacramento hosted, for the first time in Washington, a third degree in conjunction with a Corporate Mass. The Celebrant, during Mass, acknowledged the great work the Knights do for the Church and then joined the candidates receiving his third degree. Even with these outstanding accomplishments, we experienced areas that need improvement, such as every council conducting a first degree every month, those districts that have been issued their second degree books need to recruit, train and have their second degree team certified. The participation by the councils of the third degrees must be increased. We had far too many third degrees with less than ten candidates and sometimes even fewer knights attending. These issues can and must be changed, but that requires the active participation of the councils and their leadership and especially the district deputies who are the key to the success of Washington.

July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 9 My fellow Knights, I am Chairman of our new Legislative Advocacy Program; and, I am honored and excited to be the inaugural leader of this critical ministry started by Immediate Past State Deputy Don McBride. Legislative advocacy in a nutshell means to advocate, or promote, our ideals and causes with our elected legislators in the public square. I will be the Legislative Liaison between our State Deputy (you) and the State Capitol, as well as other Catholic and nondenominational groups that share our support for life and family values. So how will this impact you? As this Year of Faith continues, this will be one more opportunity for all of us, as Knights, to answer the call of Jesus to become engaged and spread His light and His love. The actual time commitment needed to accomplish this will be very small, from a few minutes to send an or make a phone call, to thirty minutes to write a letter. I do understand that the hardest part will be figuring out what to say and having the courage to pick up the phone. Well, I will be helping you with the first part, and the Holy Spirit will be giving you courage for the second part! There are mainly three ways that you, as a U.S. citizen and Washington resident, can have an impact in the public square. First of all, you can vote to determine who will be elected to office. As an individual Knight you can support and endorse single candidates, but as an organization we cannot. I may provide you with the political stances of candidates, such as who is pro-life and who is pro-choice, but I will not tell you for whom you should vote. The second way you can have an impact is to vote for initiatives and referendums at the polls. The redefinition of marriage referendum last November was an example of this. As an organization, we can endorse these races. Remember, you can have a voice and an impact in our state, if you vote. If you aren't registered, please register and answer the call. The first two ways that you can have an impact are pretty much anonymous as no one will know for whom you voted, except Jesus of course. But the third way to have an impact requires you to have the courage to take a stance and make yourself known. And that is to tell your legislators how you want them to vote on a particular bill. I will be providing the information you need; you just need to contact your representatives. If God could grant me any miracle in this regard, it would be that every Senator and Representative in Olympia personally know each and every Knight in their district by name, and know exactly how they would vote. Can you imagine the impact we would have! The Legislature is currently in its Second Special Session and trying to compromise on the state budget, which is proving very difficult. But your representatives should be coming back to their home districts soon. When they get home, make an appointment and visit them. They are parents and children and cousins and friends, just like all of us. And they really want to meet you. I will have much more to tell you in future bulletins, but I want to close my report with a quote from the founder of Opus Dei, Saint Josemaria Escriva. Opus Dei means God s Work, and we as Knights are also called to do God s work. I am writing this report on June 26th, the Feast Day of St. Josemaria, and the day that the Supreme Court made their ruling on same-sex marriage. So I think his message is very fitting for kicking off this new legislative advocacy ministry, and I ask that you read it as a prayer and pray it often: We are children of God, bearers of the only flame that can light up the paths of the earth for souls, of the only brightness which can never be darkened, dimmed or overshadowed. The Lord uses us as torches, to make that light shine out. Much depends on us; if we respond many people will remain in darkness no longer, but will walk instead along paths that lead to eternal life." Vivat Jesus, Stephen P. Czerwonka Legislative Liaison Legislative Advocacy Program

Page 10 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Family Chairman s Message POLITICS! YES, WE CAN WIN! We can win if don't listen to the political and media bosses who say we can't win. We can win because we don't play dirty politics, we play power politics, we pray. We are going to win because the tears that are in our eyes come from our hearts for the cries of the unborn. We are going to win because we have dreams that we will never give up on, saving God's babies and our family values! THIS WE PROMISE! We're going to win because we will work together as one, for the most fragile lives on the planet. Brothers, gathering votes and building a coalition of public support can be and is a very fragile undertaking, we must do it, together we will do it; "Consider that snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together." As Knights we must stand up for our values, keeping in mind that, the protection of life from conception, until natural death, is simply NOT NEGOCIABLE! We want our values reinforced, not redefined. Those who attack our values have an almost limitless supply of tools to snare people into their progressive culture. They are deceptive, better trained, better funded, and not limited by a set of standards or values. While they say they are open to other views, they seem genuinely surprised to learn that there are views other than their own. Yes, we can win, but we must stand strong and be leaders; we cannot be passive, we must stand tall and lead. A passive leader is very rarely followed and as you know... A LEADER WITH NO FOLLOWERS, IS JUST SOMEONE GOING FOR A WALK! HUNGER! Imagine as a parent the great Depression of seeing and feeling your family go to bed hungry, the pains of hearing your child say Daddy I m hungry. FOOD FOR FAMILIES PROGRAM My Brothers, I ve talked about it before, but it needs to be said again, and again, and again. No child in our state should go to bed hungry. Not for a day, a week or a month. And if my talking about it means there is just ONE child who gets the food they need. I m going to talk, and talk and talk.. Brothers it s up to people like you and I to pledge our commitment to make sure that no one, child, senior citizen, no one in our state goes to bed hungry. Hunger here in the richest nation in the world? Impossible, one might think. In virtually all the cities, a survey reported that low-income people have to make painful choices: whether to pay for rent, medicine, utilities or food. Food is being pushed farther down the list of priorities, reported providers in one city. Another respondent put it succinctly: More demand and fewer resources. And yet many of those living in food-insecure households are employed. Hunger and food insecurity, are found not only in inner-city neighborhoods. Please continue to support food banks, soup kitchens and any avenue for feeding the hungry, and one less child will go to bed hungry. The latest and greatest changes are the ability of the GK to run Income/Expense reports and membership retention info through their access in Member Management. It is found in the Print Center under Billing Reports. Not to mention, (but I will) the access to training available to the other council officers is located at help/index.html. Specifically, a.pdf version of the FS Handbook is available through this index. The Advocate has password access to the Officers Desktop Reference material. It s AUDIT TIME!! The conversations I have with councils confirm that the GK and Trustees are not always clear on the FS/ Treasurer responsibilities. In order to put the rumor to rest that the FS is supposed to fill out the audit form, please copy pages in the new FS handbook and give to the GK and Trustees. Also, there is a power point presentation on the home page of the State website. These two items spell it out in detail and should help them and you in the process. For those of you availing yourselves of Member Billing for all accounting functions, a quick run of the Receipts and vouchers report for the period will show you which vouchers you may not have input your check numbers ( an easy update) and run the outstanding balances report under Retention. Remember, if you are using Member Management for updates, the trustees do not have to complete the member headcount section. With new officers coming on board, it would be worth your while to add a couple of items to your supply order. I suggest that you order copies of the by-laws (Form 30) for the new officers and a couple of copies of the FS handbook for reference in the council meetings. Put a sticky note on sections 139 and 140 for those conversations on the definition of council funds and who is to receive those funds. It should help resolve those questions in councils who aren't quite up to snuff on how things are supposed to be done. And remember, the definition of council funds is all funds. Finally, we recently made 3 attempts to contact each Financial Secretary via concerning the Summer Leadership training and a very brief survey concerning use of Member Management and Member Billing. Sadly, we had 50+ of you who did not respond. If you are one of these and you did not receive the , please contact me and let s find out why it did not get to your active inbox. Written communications is very expensive and time consuming. Help us to do a better job of helping you! Vivat Jesus! 12 Page 12 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Community Message Wow! The beginning of another fraternal year has begun. The natural tendency for many councils, especially since the summer travel and beach season has commenced, is to step back, relax and enjoy this beautiful time of year. Well, that may be feasible for your rank and file membership, but not for you and your council's leadership team. Whether you are a new Grand Knight or Program Director or whether you have served in one of these positions for a number of years, now is the time to reflect on the council's past year and decide what programs met the leaderships expectations and what programs require more work. It is also the time to establish and publish council objectives that compliment and support the State Deputies objectives as well as those of our Supreme Deputy. Then the council's Program Director, after approval from the Grand Knight, develops programs aided by his Committee Chairmen. Now, an annual calendar is completed, published and distributed to all members. All of this should be accomplished and completed by the end of July or the first week of August. The goal should be to do this immediately after the Summer Meeting in Yakima because this is where the Grand Knight, Financial Secretary and Program Director will begin receiving their training and instruction on their duties and responsibilities as well as the goals and objectives of the Supreme Deputy as well as our State Deputy. That makes attendance at the up-coming Summer Meeting imperative for the fore-mentioned leaders even if they have attended in the past. Remember, we now have a new State Deputy and he has his own guidance that he needs to articulate and his own goals that he wants to emphasize to his subordinate leaders. Now is the time to prepare for success! In this forum, I will do my best, monthly, to provide guidance on how best to comply with the State Deputy's Community Service Program objectives. I will strive to do this by providing examples of successful programs conducted by other councils as well as early warning of upcoming and necessary meetings, publications and events. It is my initial understanding that the in less than a month new State Deputy, George Czerwonka, wants to stay with the "basics" and fundamentals in his first year, that is, Order-wide programs. In the area of Community Activities that means "Coats for Kids", "Food for Families", supporting the Wheelchair Foundation, involvement, locally, in Special Olympics (Tootsie Roll Programs), youth Essay Contests and conducting Blue Masses just to name a few of these programs. Put in the time now in order to lay a solid foundation for your councils' success at the end of this fraternal year. Remember, well thought out activities make recruitment and retention easier. To do this, select good committee chairmen, give them good guidance and hold them accountable for execution and keeping the council and community aware of their up-coming event. Well, enough thoughts and ideas for now. I am grateful to have been asked to stay on as the State Community Chairman for this fraternal year. I believe that I learned quite a bit from last year to better assist the council leadership in their activity development this year. I pledge to all of you that I will do my best to make that happen. I am also excited to see each of you in less than a month in Yakima. In will be fun and informative. Count on it! Until then, start thinking about your goals and programs. You will be ahead of the game. Ron Girkins State Community Chairman

July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 13 Brother Knights, Tootsie Roll For those of you that are new to the program, we are ready to begin our Third Annual Tootsie Roll Fund Raising Drive. All funds solicited in your local area, after your Council s approved expenses, are deposited into Columbus Charities 501 (c) (3) program to Help People with Disabilities. Out of those funds, 20% will remain with Columbus Charities and the rest is available for distribution to non-profit organization(s) in YOUR local area. The 20% retained by Columbus Charities will be issued to Washington State Special Olympics and other like programs. All other information and the simplicity of the program, is available on our website columbuscharities.net. As Grand Knight of Council 15143, St. Aloysius Parish in Spokane, I have twice had the privilege of participating in our council s Tootsie Roll Fund Raiser and seeing the checks issued. Our Council Chair, Jim Olson, volunteers with L Arche Spokane and brings them to help at the fundraiser. When I saw their faces during the fundraiser and at the check presentation, I was able to put that face to all the talk. That was a moving and defining moment for me. It made the preparation work seem so trivial. As a music teacher for the last twenty-eight years, I am involved in educating all our children, from the gifted to the disadvantaged. In fact, I still have a former student call every few months to just check in and see how my family and I are doing. These students will always have a special place in my heart and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to be with them. I saw them move through program after program and was never able to fully appreciate my life s blessings until I met these little gifts from God and saw them struggle and sometimes persevere through their disadvantages. Remember, these are only words on a cheap piece of paper unless you have; Boots on the ground, Tootsie roll in your hand, and a Smile on your face. Everyone gets a Tootsie Roll that wants one, in the hope of procuring a donation. It makes a difference, not only in others, but also in yourself and your council. Use this program to broaden your community service. I know you ll be glad. If you are a small council, look within your district and team up. Have your District Deputy help you get started with this wonderful program. If you are a large Council, mentor a smaller council. Use it to encourage your Council members, as well as, others in your district. Stay on message and you can t go wrong If not you.him? If not us.them? Together, we can do anything. We are not just knights. We are Knights of Columbus. Joe James WA State Chairman, Special Olympics My name is John Rowley. I will be your State Wheelchair Program Chairman for this coming fraternal year. I encourage all councils and assemblies to continue their fund raising efforts for those in need of mobility. The wheelchairs are in the process of being ordered. We will be getting a mixture of different size wheelchairs. Once the order has been placed, we should see them in about 90 days. We are still in the process of deciding where the distribution will take place. The councils that have placed orders or are letting the State handle the distribution, thank you. The councils that have not made us aware of their intentions, we have to move forward. I will be working with you to determine your intentions. 15 July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 15 Retention Chairman To the retiring Grand Knights: I would like to thank you for your time and cooperation this past fraternal year. It has been a pleasure working with you and your councils trying to lower the suspension rate for both the council and the state. I hope that I have left with you some ideas on how to lower your council s losses. To the Grand Knights elect: I am looking forward to working with each of you in reducing the council s and states losses. We will be using clearly defined guidelines which have been established over the last twenty years. Quite possibly we can create some new ideas for us in tackling any possible suspensions. I will see you all at the summer meeting. Vivat Jesus Andy Kraemer Retention Chairman Vocations Chairman As the new Vocations Chairman for the state I take great pride in writing my first monthly newsletter column. I have been actively involved in supporting seminarians and the Bishop White Seminary in Spokane, WA for several years. I personally support a seminarian by providing him with a monthly stipend to relieve the burden of his family. The thought of going to church and not having a priest to say Mass, or hear confessions is something most of us do not worry about. However, it is a real problem in many communities even in our own diocese. Many priests are assigned to multiple parishes, and many travel to different towns. That presents a problem for many of those who do not have a full time priest. Through programs like Quo Vadis Days we can help our young people discern their vocation to serving God in the priesthood. By supporting our seminarians through the RSVP program we can insure that those seminarians can continue their journey to the priesthood even when their personal funds are limited. My current council is supporting two seminarians through the RSVP program which provides them with much needed financial support. I will expand on these programs in future columns. My real passion is to support Bishop White Seminary in Spokane. One of the primary purposes of a college seminary is to assist a young man to discover God's will for his life. College seminary is a time of testing that vocation. Bishop White Seminary offers the best possible environment and mentoring for young men to begin their journey to the priesthood. But the seminary has an outstanding mortgage that is a high interest loan. The mortgage really needs to get paid off as soon as possible. To that end, Colfax Council 1488 and District 8 are issuing a direct challenge to every council in the state to meet or beat their donation of $1500 to Bishop White Seminary toward reducing the construction debt and retiring the mortgage. Every council should send their funds (marked Retire the Mortgage ) directly to: Bishop White Seminary Attn: Very Rev. Steven Dublinski 429 E. Sharp Ave. Spokane, WA Thank you to District Deputy Kurt Zimmerman and the Colfax Council for your support of Bishop White Seminary. All councils who participate in this challenge and meet or exceed the $1500 donation level will be published in a future column of this newsletter. Consider all of the gifts you have received in your life, I would bet many have to do with your Catholic Faith and by extension, a priest. Yours in Christ, Tim Coyle Vocations Chairman

Page 16 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 The continuing story of Guadalupe Continuing story of the Nican Mopohua, the original account of Guadalupe written in Aztec by one that knew Juan Diego the bishop that was the first to see the image, Bishop Zumarraga. In the previous article we read that Juanito, as instructed, climbed the hill of Tepeyac to pick beautiful flowers and take to the bishop as proof of this lovely lady that had appeared. The Bishop wanted proof; he could not act to build a church without something to go on as proof. After the lady from heaven had finished her instructions, he set out along the causeway leading directly to Mexico City. Happy now and feeling sure that this time everything would go well, he held his precious burden close to protect it and prevent any of its contents from falling out, while delighting in the fragrance of the various beautiful flowers. When he arrived at the residence of the Bishop, the doorkeeper and the other servants stepped out to meet him. He begged them to inform the Bishop how urgent it was that he sees him, but they all refused pretending they did not hear him, either because it was dark, or knew him from the other visits and felt he was giving them trouble with his repeated visits. They had also already been informed by their companions of how he had slipped from their sight the time they had been ordered to follow him. When they saw him standing there a long time, head lowered, doing nothing in case he should call; they noticed that he seem to be carrying something. Out of curiosity, they went over to him and tried to see what it was he was carrying. When Juan Diego saw that he couldn t hide what he carried and fearing that they would continue to harass him and possibly damage the flowers, he opened the fold of his tilma a bit to give them a peek. When they saw that it contained exquisite, different blooming flowers out of season, they were awed. They were impressed how fresh they were, how open their corollas were, how good they smelled and how beautiful. They dared to snatch some of them away from him three times but they could not succeed. They no longer saw real flowers, but flowers which seemed to be painted, embroidered or sewed on the tilma. They went away to tell the Bishop what they had seen and informed him about the humble Indian who had come before and waiting a long time to see him. Hearing this, the Bishop realized that Juan had the proof he needed to convince him to carry out Our Lady s wish. He immediately ordered them to show him in. Upon entering, Juan Diego prostrated himself before the Bishop as he had done the other times, reporting everything he had seen and marveled at, and repeated her message. We of the fraternal order, Knights of Columbus brothers that we are, have heard bits and pieces of the message Nuestra Senora brought to this new land in 1531; a message that is as real, fresh today as it was in that winter s cold morning when Juan Diego knelt before her. She came with child, telling Juan, Know for sure my dearest that I am the perfect Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of God of truth through Whom everything lives, the Lord of all things near us, the Lord of heaven and earth. I will give him to the people in all my personal love, in my compassion, in my help, in my protection: because I am truly your merciful Mother, yours and all people who live united in this and of all the other people of different ancestries, those who love me, those who seek me, those who trust in me. Soon, She will come to parishes in Eastern Washington as the Silver Rose, one Rose, One life, seek her, people of all ancestries, and trust in her that she brings to the world an end to the culture of death an end to the evils that plague this society. If we unite ourselves in prayer, she will hear and answered our prayer, we must place our trust in her. Mike Calderon Hispanic/Silver Rose Chairman

Page 22 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin July 2013 Marian Hour Program The Immaculate Conception "Continuing a decades-long tradition, the Knights of Columbus will launch their fifteenth international prayer program this August. The new program, centering on the Immaculate Conception, was announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson at the Organizational Meeting of State Deputies in New Haven, Conn. Since the first prayer program began in 1979, more than 16 million faithful have participated in the Knights sponsored holy hours. This year s program marks the second time the Order will hold a program consecrated to the Immaculate Conception. The first program was held from The Order will commission nearly 100 icons of the Immaculate Conception using an image from Notre-Dame de Quebec, in Quebec City at their international convention in San Antonio this August. The icons will travel throughout the world, under the organization of local Knights councils who will present prayer programs with the icon for their parishes and communities. The current program, dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, will conclude this August. It has been the most successful prayer program in the Order s history, Anderson said." George Czerwonka State Deputy Jesus Wins in the Mountains The following is a summary of an Associated Press article. HELENA, Mont. (AP) A Jesus statue that has for six decades been a curiosity to skiers as they cruise down a popular run at a northwest Montana ski resort will not be evicted from federal land, a judge ruled Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen said the Flathead National Forest can re-issue a 10-year permit for the statue installed on the ski hill by the Knights of Columbus. The judge disagreed with a Wisconsin-based group of atheists and agnostics that argued the Forest Service was unconstitutionally sanctioning the statue. The Forest Service first indicated in 2011 that it would reject a new permit for the statue, which occupies a 25 -by-25 foot patch of land at Whitefish Mountain Resort. But the agency reversed itself in 2012 amid public outcry. Christensen said that the statue does not convey to a reasonable informed observer that the government, rather than a private party, endorses Christianity over any other faith or the absence of faith. The new federal judge, appointed by President Barack Obama in 2011, said the statue is one of the last remaining remnants of the original Big Mountain Ski Resort and some locals say it reflects the transition from old timber town to tourist hotspot. "The statue's secular and irreverent uses far outweigh the few religious uses it has served. The statue is most frequently used as a meeting point for skiers or hikers and a site for photo opportunities, rather than a solemn place for religious reflection," the judge wrote. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which argued the statue violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution's prohibition on Congress making any law regarding an establishment of religion, said it was shocked by the ruling. The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which defended the monument in court, applauded the "commonsense" decision. It argued the statue is a far cry from creating a state religion and not every religious statue runs afoul of the Constitution. The statue has been maintained by the local Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization, since members that included World War II veterans inspired by religious monuments they saw while fighting in the mountains of Europe erected the monument in The Knights have never been charged for use of the public land.

July 2013 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 25 With God, Anything Is Possible It s hard to believe that this will be my last Cross & Compass article as the Grand Knight. This year sure has been a busy and successful year for our council. I look back at what my life has been like the past five years. I am just speechless on how much my life has been blessed with God by my side. I know that God has always been by my side, but I didn t necessarily let him be by my side up until five years ago. Growing up my family and I went to St. Vincent s. We slowly stopped going to church as much when we got a little bit older. We stopped putting God as first priority in life. There were lots of sports, music, and extracurricular activities that always trumped church and our time with God. Our family has always had the faith and belief, but we never took it beyond our household because of the lives we had. It s not like we were bad people, we just didn t make it a priority like it is today. About five years ago, I took a road trip to Libby, Montana to visit my grandparents. We went to mass the Sunday morning I was over there visiting and that s when I got the A-HA! moment from God. As I sat there in the pews, I looked at the very few people around me. I noticed that every person in that church was over the age of 60. Granted the town of Libby is very small, but what hit me were the lack of people in the pews and the age of people in the pews. It was such an emotional loving thought that transformed my heart that day. I just instantly thought, Am I going to wait until I am 60 years old to start going back to church or start today? As we went through mass all I could do is think about how much these few people loved the church and loved God and that was something I now wanted. Being there with my grandparents sure was special to watch them pray so peacefully and loving. Looking back at that mass, I didn t pay attention to about anything in the mass but to just the people around me. It was such a sad but beautiful moment for me. As I left my grandparents after a nice visit, grandpa said, So when are you going to become a Knight? I always knew he was a 4th degree Knight but never put much thought into it beyond that. So I told him someday! On my way home, I felt different. I felt like I needed to start my life with God. I came home and the next day I was all over the Knights of Columbus s Supreme website learning about all of the good things the order does. I knew precisely at that moment I wanted to be a Brother Knight and be a Knight of God. I clicked the I want to join button and in no time I got a phone call from my brother Greg Vicars. We sat down and had a nice conversation and I went through my first degree in Auburn during the summertime because I didn t want to wait until fall when the fraternal year started. (Sometimes I guess I can be impatient.) From that point to this present day, my life has been truly blessed. God has put me on a path that I just love. I have committed countless amounts of blood, sweat, tears, and time to our Holy Catholic Church and to the Knights of Columbus which I truly love with all of my heart. God has blessed me with my better half and we were able to celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage in our church this past August. Coming back to the church has brought my family so much closer together. Faith is now an important part to my whole family. I was able to get confirmed and my brother Richard just got confirmed last week. I was finally able to see God s sign five years ago and it has changed my life forever. All of this wouldn t have been possible if it wasn t for the loving supporting of my Wife Erin, my family (Mom, Dad, Brother, Grandma, Grandpa, Tim and Beth) and all of you brother Knights that have encouraged, supported, and loved me throughout these past five years. Being a child of God and a Knight of Columbus these past five years has been the most blessed and humbling experience I have ever had in life. With God on our side, anything is possible. We can achieve and accomplish anything we want to. All we need to do is have faith and belief we can do it. As Knights, we should always thirst and thrive for doing more for our church and community. It has helped me become who I am today as a person in the church and Knights. Going forth, Erin and I will keeping walking down the path of God, having God take us where we need to be in life. We are completely happy to do so because of the love we share in God and in our faith community. I hope you all understand why I am a Knight of Columbus and what being a Knight means to me personally. I wouldn t be here today if it wasn t for my family and my faith community, especially my fellow brother Knights. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you as Grand Knight this year! Vivat Jesus! Joseph Wolleat Grand Knight An A-HA Moment from God
