1 News of New Hope O ne of my favorite stories about stewardship is told by Tony Campolo. He recounts the time he was invited as a guest speaker by a prominent congregation in Chicago. While he was visiting, a woman approached the congregation about a ministry she and a team of people were beginning in the inner city. They had a property, which was an ideal location for a soup kitchen and help center, particularly for the large number of homeless people that was sadly growing instead of shrinking. The church s elders listened to her very detailed plan and it INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Team Reports 2-3 Mission Feature 4 Stewardship 5 Prayer Ministry 6 Ministry 7 Pastor s Report 8-9 Sports 10 Celebrations 10 Pastor s Pen 12 New Hope United Methodist Church 200 E New Hope Road Goldsboro, NC Become the Answer to Someone s Prayers {Luke 10:25-37 A Meditation for All Saints Day, November 1 st & the season of Stewardship} Sunday Schedule Brookdale Service 9:30 Awakening Prayer Partners 10:00 Sunday School 11:00 Morning Worship & Children s Church (ages 3-8) 6:00 Ringers of New Hope practice Nov 22: Thanksgiving service at 7 pm was clear the strategy was thought through very carefully. Now, the team was in the process of raising $10,000 and they would be ready to launch the ministry. After she completed the presentation, one of the church leaders responded that her plan was indeed very admirable. Every person on that church committee agreed this ministry was needed. Finally, the leader told her that the church would be keeping her team in their prayers. As the woman was getting her things together and preparing to walk out the door, one of the members of the committee did (Continued on page 6) Scouting Meetings Mon. Cub Scouts 6:30 Tues. 4 Mission Feature of the Month Meals on Wheels {Ministry Spotlight for November} Meals-on-wheels. What a wonderful opportunity to add some significant emotional uplift to your life. The personal involvement can be at just about any level you want. Start off with delivering one day a month and if you find this to be your cup of tea increase it to any level you re comfortable with. I started out a couple of years ago with one route a week in the New Hope area. It became infectious and before I knew it I was running a couple of times a week and on stand-by for other days that the normal driver couldn t be there for things like doctor appointments or vacations. The rewards are amazing you just can t get this kind of good feelings for any amount of money and the good you do is almost above measure. Really!! The smiles you receive on faces when you show up with a warm meal and a warm heart is payment unmatched by any currency known to man. The daily visit is so important to the folks who depend on this program. For many it s a daily life line not only for their dietary needs, but also to the outside world. Let me share with you some of my experiences. I deliver all over the city and county. This takes me into several varied neighborhood some middle to upper middle class and then others that are far from that status. I delivered to one old lady in the area of north Center Street that was bed ridden. A knock on the door followed by the announcement of meals-on-wheels and through the door I went delivering her meal to her bedside in the back bedroom of an old stick built house that now looked more like a shack. We shared some chit-chat and a small well intentioned prayer for her health and a good day my payment, some brown sugar she insisted on giving me before my departure. You know, it became one of my favorite stops! Another wonderful experience I ve enjoyed the past 2 + years has been on Olivia Lane. Yup, you read it right, Olivia Lane you know, right off of Slocumb Street. I ve had the pleasure of bringing this delightful lady her mid-day meal every Monday for over 2 years. We also talk about her grown kids and how their lives are going or not going depending on family dynamics on any given visit. The verbal exchange is good for both of us. She meets someone from a different walk of life just as I do and yet we both come away realizing we re pretty much the same in our hopes and needs and somewhere in there we talk a little about Jesus and realize He loves us both, the same way. Now here s the downside of this wonderful job you lose em once in a while. Both Brown Sugar and 918B have gone home to be with the Lord. Good friends I found through Meals-on Wheels. So what makes people do this kind of thing? Oh, I guess there s as many sources of motivation as there are people working in the program. For me, it s simple Matthew 25: I m sure you re familiar with the scripture, but it s worth a re-read and will take very little time. I commend it to you for your reading pleasure and if need be, something to re-align your morale compass. The passage states this in verse 40: And the King will answer them, I assure you: whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did unto me That has resonated with me most of my life and has motivated me to join numerous volunteer programs that reached a hand of aid out to my fellow man maybe that resonates with you too. I truly hope so, I don t want to be the only one enjoying some Brown Sugar!! ~John Potter, driver, listener Page 4 November 2015

5 DISCIPLINE OF WAITING 13 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! (Isaiah 30:13, NIV) From Genesis to Revelation God s people are called to wait. It is a common experience, yet commonly exasperating. A wait often challenges the most mature believer, but God repeatedly promises great reward for those who wait. The gap of our present expectations and their ultimate fruition is our modern day wilderness experience. Personal needs urgently press and we wait...and wait. We are apt to question, Where is God? Then, we tend to grumble! So why would God providentially allow us these barren periods? If they bring doubts to our minds, how can we possibly benefit? The short answer is that a wait reveals our lack of faith. The long answer is that God uses the wait to build our faith. Of all the disciplines waiting has the potential to be the most faith producing. We wait for what we deem important. Several months ago, I received an invitation to a luncheon as an honored guest. I waited with great anticipation, to be honored among people, of whom I felt were important. However, I can quickly lose patience in a checkout line, when I perceive customers aren t valued. If we did a heart check we delight in the thought that God waits for us and upon us. Yet God is truly most important. We were created to serve and wait upon Him. Waiting is easier if our priorities are in order. We wait upon God because of His character. In the business world, the terms of a loan, the interest rate and need for collateral are largely based upon character. There are few people today who are trusted on their word and a mere handshake. Yet, we serve a God who is unchangeable, infinitely good, and who declares unfailing love for us. God s word is His bond. We wait for God because of His clear promises. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. In God s grand design, we are His people. God does not promise to always make us comfortable, but promises to make us useful. There are clear promises in Scripture that we can stake our lives upon. We wait because God commands us to wait. I still remember the general order, I will quit my post only when properly relieved. Sentry duty is a basic military skill. Sentry duty is essentially a discipline of waiting. I can t remember how many times I pulled guard duty, but I can remember that nothing ever happened. The discipline was in enduring the boredom of waiting. Yet in contrast, we wait for the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. That event is certain. We are called to live our lives in the light of His Coming. As we move through the chapters of our own lives, the gaps between the promise and fulfillment tend to grow longer and more complex. Many prophets of old were entrusted with promises that would not take hold for several generations. I know that in my own life, I seem to be between chapters and the waiting never gets easier. But, now I can remember the faithfulness of God in prior experiences. We wait for God s perfect timing in transitions. Waiting may often be God s way of saying He has faith in us. ~Chaplain Al Thompson, Chair SPRC Page 5

What he then said astonished the entire room. He said, Madam, I m afraid we ve misled you. We re not going to pray for you because there s nothing to pray about it. We re not going to pray that you raise $10,000. That amount of money already exists and it s within our pockets if we re honest enough to admit it. None of us are leaving this room until her money is on the table. Tony Campolo is one Christian author who has been around the block a time or two, but even he admits this scene took him to new heights. It was one of those rare prophetic moments that every church needs to hear. Campolo noted that day perhaps it is a sin to pray about something when we Page 6 already know the answer. Maybe the idea isn t so much to keep praying that someone else will deliver the answer when the whole inspiration of our prayer is to raise up the one praying to become the answer. Within minutes, nearly double the amount of money the woman and her team needed was laying on the table. After reading Campolo s story, we have to admit that as interesting as it is, his perspective on this is hardly original. Jesus told a similar story 2000 years before and His is known as The Good Samaritan. In this story there is a man left for dead in a ditch. Picture the man who is lying there, praying for someone to help. A priest and Levite soon come by and see the man. It s not hard to imagine them looking at the man, feeling much sincere pity, and then saying, We re praying for you. As we celebrate All Saints this year, we might ask ourselves which character in Jesus story we identify with. Surely there have been times in our lives when we can identify with the man in the ditch. We ve been on the receiving end of well meaning believers who ve said, We re praying for you. We ve also been on the other end and said that to people when God is laying it on our hearts to take a stand in becoming the answer to their prayers. Lifting up prayers is sufficient if this is all we re in the position to do. However, God desires we move into action, becoming the answer desperate pleas are seeking. ~Rev. Steve Wellman November 2015

How are you demonstrating generosity in your congregation and community and personally participating in giving, leading by example? In what ways are you teaching, expressing, and embodying unity in your congregation and intentionally working to dismantle racism in the community around you? The SPRC will meet to discuss and turn in these questions due by November 30 th Budget Many thanks to Doris for her hard work putting together our first draft for the 2016 budget. 10 SPORTS Lindsay Krochta, Reporter Upward TM Flag Football and Cheerleading It's another awesome Upward season! Players and cheerleaders are enjoying some exciting games each Saturday morning. So far this season, we've had devotions by Pastor Steve, Mike Smith and Steve Miller. These devotions give players and parents a chance to hear a relatable story and reflect. Steve Miller did a devotion about Noah s Ark and had the children impersonating animals. Our record numbers this year have been such a blessing. We've joined forces with Spring Creek Baptist this season and have been so pleased to see the league expand. Please continue to support and pray for our Upward ministry. 11 (Continued from page 12) For Paul, the source of our extra strength pain relief is found through learning contentment. The message in this regard wouldn t sound as convincing if it were coming from a person who was sitting in a hammock under the shade on a gorgeous beach with a cold drink. Paul exclaims that he s known the best of times and the worst of times. No matter what the surrounding conditions of life, the practice of contentment brings a constancy that is lacking in every other way. Those who lack contentment, even when there s a surplus, there s never enough. Consider the man in Jesus parable who looked at the vast plantations he currently possessed. Was he grateful for the surplus he already had? Unfortunately, his only thought was for amassing more and more. This character isn t the exception. but he represents the norm of human nature. Our tendency is to desire security on our terms, but often life refuses to cooperate with what we call our terms. The medicine of contentment made possible through practicing a life of Thanksgiving is the source, which delivers us from all that besets us. Not only does it deliver us from those thoughts of never having enough, but it delivers us from discouragement when times become lean. In Paul s day, there were no federally funded, country-club style correctional facilities. Inmates depended on handouts for support. Those who were incarcerated were reduced to lives of thorough poverty. Despite the condition Paul is in, he can testify with boldness that contentment enables a confidence we can t find any other way. During this season we ll see various news stations stopping people in the street and asking, What are you Thankful for? It s highly unexpected we might hear in return, I m thankful that God makes contentment medicine for the soul. If we think Thanksgiving is an option, then we d better think again. For those who have surplus, it delivers us from the anxiety of wanting more than we have. For those with less, it inspires us to see life as overflowing and abundant. 12 Pastor s Pen by Steve Wellman For Extra Strength Pain Relief {Philippians 4:12-13, A Meditation for Thanksgiving Day, November 26 th and the Season of Stewardship} O ne of the most often quoted passages of scripture is Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. While we hear it often, what isn t as familiar is the context and theme Paul s words flow out of. Paul is writing this particular letter, as he did most of his New Testament letters, from a dungeon cell. He has just received a generous gift from the church at Philippi and Paul is now sending them a thank you letter in return. They assumed Paul is struggling with depression since he s incarcerated behind bars in confinement. Paul admits he s known his share of lean times. What he has discovered though when he s been as low as low can go is something that works on our heart like medicine. It s the ultimate cure when nothing else will do. People frequently wonder how discouragement can persist even though devotional time is practiced, prayer time is honored, and the spiritual disciplines are seen to. Paul says there s one more thing available that we can think of as extra strength pain relief. What is the one thing Paul has found that can enable perseverance through tough times? What s the one thing within reach that will inspire us to push through? (Continued on page 11) The News of New Hope New Hope United Methodist Church 200 East New Hope Road Goldsboro, NC Pastor: Rev.
