1 Volume 8, Number 4 Information ~ Inspiration ~ Humor June/July 2012 THE APISON APPEAL Monthly Newsletter of the Apison, TN Seventh-Day Adventist Church Free Oil Change for Single Moms No Fooling A dream the Apison, TN church evangelism team had for 2012 was to follow Christ s way of reaching people intentionally in our community. Christ s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then He bade them, Follow Me. MH 143. For a year and a half, Apison church members have gone door to door doing a survey to discover the interest and needs of the community. Then we developed a plan to offer the programs that were indicated, such as Financial Peace University and Love and Respect Marriage Seminar. Friendships have been formed and Bible studies started. One young couple was baptized; two more couples are studying regularly. This year we are doing a quarterly post card mailing with a Bible promise, a message of hope and upcoming events. These cards are being delivered to each of the 1470 homes and post office boxes in the Apison area. Our most recent event was a free oil and filter change for 30 single moms in the community. Matt the Mechanic (Matt Manzari), a student pastor at our church gave a tutorial on car care and emergencies. Their tire pressure was checked and windshields were cleaned. April 1, 2012 The ladies were pampered with a five minute chair massage with soothing music, free photo shoot for a 5x7, fellowship in the hospitality room where the ladies could visit, enjoy some refreshments and share their prayer requests. The Health Ministry team had a station where the ladies received a little loaf of homemade bread, had a choice of several Lifestyle magazines and were able to sign up for free cooking classes and a single mom s support group. At the last station they received a velour blanket and an option to take a Final Crisis and/or Cosmic Conflict DVD. Their visit ended by being given a folder with an encouraging letter from the pastor, and gift certificates for goods and services from businesses in the community. Twenty five church members received the blessing of participating and 30 businesses gave generous donations exceeding $11,500. Massengill Tire donated 30 Free oil and filter changes. We want to thank all who had a part in making this a special day in the lives of those who are challenged as single moms. continued on page 2

The Apison Seventh day Adventist Church Bates Road ~ Apison, TN Post Office Box 1551 ~ Collegedale, TN Telephone: (423) You can find us on Facebook, too! Here are just a few of the comments from the moms: This was so wonderful and I felt so pampered. When are you going to do this again? This has been such a help on a week that is going to be very hard for me facing a child custody battle in court. I feel so undeserving because I ve been grumbling all week. Since we each got a coupon to the new restaurant in town let s all go together. I don t like going alone. Pastor: Jeff Brown jeffandjoy@yahoo.com Youth Pastor: Zack Payne Head Elder: Glen Wintermeyer Head Deacon: Wendel Adams Head Deaconess: Jeanie Hair Clerk: Karen Glassford Lester Coon Adventist School Telephone: (423) * * * * I know we have had lots of tornadoes in our area and I want to be a good steward of my money but I recently sent up a prayer to God that I would like some pretty flowers this year, it wasn t a big request and here in my folder are some free flowers from the local nursery. God is so good. I am so glad to meet some other single moms because I just went through a divorce, have a 2, 4 and 6 yr old and really need some support. THE APISON APPEAL A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS Editor: Amanda Thomas...(615) sunflower785@hotmail.com Calendar/Circulation: Lisa Jennings Photography: Cindy Cummings Printing: Modern Way Printing & Fulfillment I have been taking a Hispanic mom and her children to another SDA church for 2 years and been praying that I might find another single mom who could speak Spanish and study with her. We met another Spanish speaking mom who invited us to her home where we visited for 2 hrs and she is interested in doing a bible study with my friend. Thank you so much for giving us such a special day. One lady who couldn t attend asked where our church was because she would like to visit. She is not of the Adventist faith but her sister is the only Adventist in their family. We just want to praise God for what He is doing in the hearts and lives of the people in the Apison Community. God is at work. Are we willing to join Him? ~John Holley, Evangelism/Outreach Director Opportunity may knock once, But temptation bangs on the front door forever.

3 Page 3 The Apison Appeal June/July 2012 Lester Coon Adventist Red Clay Adventure BY 6 TH 8 TH GRADERS School News On Friday, April 13 th, the 5 8th graders went to Red Clay State Park for a field trip. We had such a great time! We have been studying the Oregon Trail in school and we were able to eat, cook, and build fires like the pioneers. The first thing we did was to separate into three groups and build fires! First, we had to find wood, kindling, and tinder to start the fire and to keep it going. We had to have all the wood gathered before starting our fire. It was fun building with the wood to make a platform to cook soup on. The next thing we did was make stew. We cut up the vegetables and put them in a pot with water over the cooking fire on the platform. We made our stew with tomatoes, some onions, beans, carrots, celery, corn, and potatoes. It was hard cooking it, though, because the fire was so hot that we had to use hot pads and a long spoon to stir the stew. Mrs. Mundall even used her firefighter gloves! It took a while to cook, and we almost lost it at one point when it started to fall through the frame we put it on, but it was still worth it in the end. Another group lost half of their soup when the handle burned off their pot. The soup was very good and was so much fun to make. We also had bread to go with our stew. We had to make it ourselves! We each got a bag of Bisquick and poured water in it. Then we kneaded it with our hands. When it was the right consistency, we put it onto a stick. We took the stick and put it over the fire. We held it there until it was baked. Then, we ate it. It tasted pretty bad for something that had so many steps to make, especially since the middle didn t cook very well. But if you put a bit of butter on it, it tasted okay. Yes, we had butter for our bread; and we also made it ourselves! First, we put some heavy whipping cream into a jar and added a marble. Then we took turns shaking the jar for a long, long time. Our arms got tired, but we had to keep shaking. Finally, the cream turned into butter! It was cool to watch it change, and with a little bit of salt it tasted really good on our bread and crackers. After eating, we each got to build our own fire. We tried to build them using three or less matches. It was tricky! Some kids got it on the first match; others had to use over ten matches! The biggest problem people had was not gathering enough kindling and tinder before starting their fire. We learned to be prepared ahead of time. Thank God we only had one injury! What happened was that Victoria Beason tripped over Katie s foot and scraped her knee. So, when we all went to the creek to play, Victoria soaked her knee in the cool water to clean the wound. The creek was very pretty and cool and clean and everyone liked wading in it. After playing in the creek, we went to the cabins. There we played some fun games like Cops and Robbers. We also played a game where you were stuck in jail and somehow had to escape to the other cabin rooms. After running for almost an hour, we were glad to go watch an interesting movie about Native Americans in the visitor center. After the movie, we headed back to the school. It was a really fun field trip, and a lot of kids said it was the best one they had been on all year! It was fun getting to see and experience how the pioneers lived.

4 Page 4 The Apison Appeal June/July 2012 LCA th Grade Graduate Skylynn Selena Hills Family Happenings BY CAROLINA SMITH, 4 th Grade Skylynn is an eighth grader and the only graduate this year at Lester Coon Adventist School. She was born on May 15, 1997, and she loves big cats. She thinks that this school has blessed her with a great education, and lots of friends. Skylynn loves the Lord, and says that Jesus saved her from floating away in a river when she was young. Her favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 60:1 because it reminds her that she will see Jesus coming in the clouds someday. She thinks that helping others is very important, and that it helps you, too. Next year she is going to Fletcher Academy (a school in North Carolina) and plans to be an animator, write scripts, and be the voices in movies someday in the future. I would like to be a student missionary someday, but a lot of my plans might change, depending on where God leads me, says Skylynn. Skylynn is a very kind girl, with God in the center of her life, and we pray that she will have a bright future as she serves Him. 6 Page 6 The Apison Appeal June/July 2012 Apison SDA Church Business Meeting Minutes An Apison Seventh day Adventist Church Business Meeting and Lester Coon Adventist School Constituency Meeting was held on Sunday, April 29, 2012 in the church sanctuary at 6 pm. Approximately 30 members attended the meeting. After beginning with prayer, Pastor Jeff Brown informed the members that the meeting had been called for two reasons: to discuss the proposed renovations and improvements to the church and school, and to satisfy the LCAS constitution, which requires at least one constituency meeting each year. Pastor Brown asked if the members had any concerns or items to discuss before those two main items. Maurice Robert asked why, in Sabbath School, do we not call for Birthday / Thank Offerings as the church used to do. Christopher Beason (S.S. Superintendant) responded that we can do that if that is what members would like. Dan Seebeck added that we used to do this on the first Sabbath of each month. Joyce Estey (treasurer) gave a report of the church s finances. The church is doing well financially. She shared that any time the balance of the Combined Budget account exceeds $36,000, the excess is transferred into Unrestricted Reserve Account. Jeanie Hair mentioned that a sub committee was appointed by the board in late 2011 to decide what materials to use and replace the floor of the kitchenette (Classrooms B and C), but the committee did not accomplish their goal. It was VOTED that the church board form a new committee to follow through on the project to re floor the kitchenette. Erling Odell asked about LCAS. Members had been told that LCAS was seriously needing funds, so some members were giving extra financial support directly to LCAS (rather than giving to Combined Budget). Is LCAS still severely short of fund? Eric Schoonard (LCAS board chair) responded that because of the help for small schools initiative by the conference, LCAS is doing well. The church and school renovation and improvement project was presented by Bill Cruttenden (building committee chair). We need to choose if we want to do the project as a single campaign in which we raise funds toward one dollar amount (over $600,000, see attached sheet) or if we want to approach it on an item by item basis, doing the work, and raising the money, in phases. Joyce Estey spoke in favor of doing project item by item. Katharine McFarland spoke about the importance and the need for getting the roof replaced. She supports Joyce s suggestion. Noelle Holland asked about the reasons for prioritizing things as they were on the list. Bill explained why the sub projects were listed in the order that they were. Anita McGrath said that since most members are saying we should do this a piece at a time, what else do we need to discuss? Eric Schoonard agreed that we need to do this by sections in the order listed. Christopher Beason made a motion That we take the project as presented and move through it incrementally, with the Finance Committee and Building Committee taking the lead, with regular reports and updates to the board. Chris Carey seconded. The motion was VOTED. Anita McGrath said there is a need to renovate the kitchen in school gym. Eric Schoonard said that this should be referred to the school board. There was a question about the parking lot fund in the bulletin. It was explained that this was money already paid out for the gravel work that has already been put down. We put this in the bulletin each week as a reminder to encourage folks to donate and pay ourselves back. Christopher Beason made a motion that we report what we have done here tonight on Sabbath morning, with the Finance Chair & Building Chair reporting. This was VOTED. Lester Coon Adventist School Eric passed out the LCAS financial report. Mark Sargeant gave a progress report about the school. We have received a windfall the conference has decided to increase subsidy to small schools. Because of this, our finances are in good shape, and we are not raising our tuition for Our current enrollment is 31. Faith Laughlin & Mark Sargeant talked about the cooperation between SAU and LCAS. Mark shared that students have made cards for nursing home residents, gone to Discovery Center and Aquarium. We had a closing prayer, and then Bill Cruttenden took all those who were interested on a tour of the church, pointing out the proposed renovations and improvements.
