John F. Boudreaux State Deputy We are in the Advent Season and of course we all know what follows Advent; Christmas. So, on behalf of Pris and I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We just held our Annual Mid- Year Meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Lafayette, attendance was a little low, but we still accomplished a great deal. We planned programs and ceremonials for the next 6 months of the fraternal year. Membership is moving along very well this year, so thank you very much for councils who are recruiting and reinstating brother knights. Membership Director Richard Yandle is working very hard with councils to achieve membership goals. We have a lot of councils on track for Star Council. This is an awesome honor and achievement for a council. Councils who achieve Star Council are offering programs, activities, and reach membership goals, as well as insurance goals. We discussed how to get this done at KCLS and will also discuss Star Council at Grand Knight s Day coming up on January 11, 2014 at Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette. Please plan to attend, we have awesome presentations to share with you and some outstanding Gumbo. It is our Annual State Gumbo Finals and we get to eat the best gumbo from council finalist from all over the state. We still have a lot of programs coming in 2014 as well as membership incentives, so come to Teurlings Catholic High School to find out how your council can capitalize on the membership incentives that Supreme is offering and many more ideas and training. YEP money is collected on Grand Knight s Day and your council will be recognized when you present your check for YEP to Kenny Gonzales our YEP Chairman. During the Mid-Year Meeting mentioned, we launched something very exciting, the State Council Net TV Station. We are the first Net TV Station in Louisiana. The Net Station is accessed on the web through the internet. Knightsofcolumbus.tv is the landing page, the main site is found at social.knightsofcolumbus.tv. The Net Station is filled with many features and if you log on to knightsofcolumbus.tv you will find infomercials that Robert Boudreaux filmed in our Studio describing the many features available on the Net TV Station. One of my favorite features is the Chat Room you may chat one on one or create a Group. We have created groups for the Area Coordinators and continued on page 4 Saturday, January 11, 2014 Teurlings Catholic High School Lafayette Bishop Ronald P. Herzog State Chaplain ddeorosan@diocesealex.org The Advent Season is quickly drawing to a close and we are again preparing to celebrate the birth of Our Lord. It is to the great credit of our Order that we have consistently worked to keep Jesus as the focal point in spite of all the secularism that has now invaded this sacred time. Let us keep up our efforts. Our role as Knights becomes increasingly more critical for the future of the Church, our country and the world. Pope Francis continues to remind us of our destiny and calls us to be courageous in fulfilling it. Recently I had the opportunity to take part in two important gatherings of our Order. I was able to attend the mid-year meeting (along with our State Deputy, John Boudreaux) of State Deputies and State Chaplains, held this year in Quebec City, Canada. This year marks the 350 th of the Church in Quebec. We plan to explore the possibility of a pilgrimage to this historic site to celebrate with the people with whom we have such a close connection through faith. Recently the mid-year State Family meeting took place in Lafayette to update District Deputies and Areas Coordinators as we look ahead to the rest of the year. In spite of the cold and rain, it was a great chance to be with so many or the leaders of continued on next page 2

our order. YEP One of the most exciting innovations announced was the new KC internet television network that has been developed. I will let those more familiar provide the details but I urge you to consider subscribing. This has the potential of being one of the most helpful tools to help us serve the Church. Congratulations Worthy State Deputy! $150,000 As you know a truly historic event will take place in Rome on the Sunday Kenny Gonzales after Easter (April 27), the canonization of two popes, both of our own time, kennygonzales@cox.net Y.E.P. Chairman John XXIII and John Paul II. Here in $125,000 the Diocese of Alexandria we have put together plans for a pilgrimage to Rome to celebrate with people from throughout the world. Space is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis and the deadline is in mid-january. I am inviting $$100,000 any Brother Knights who may be interested to join me. Details and forms are available on our diocesan web site. I am including the link to make it easier for those who may want it. ( $75,000 bishop-herzog-host-pilgrimage-jpiicanonization) May you, your families, your parishes and our Order experience the $50,000 great joy and blessings of this very special season. Vivat Jesus! View Bishop Herzog s Monthly Video at State Website Greetings Brother Knights. Thanks again for allowing me the time to talk about the Youth Expansion Program (YEP). A total of 11 councils have already made donations for this worthy program. As of November 30, 2013, a total of $10, has been received. This puts us at a little over 7.5% of our goal. I hope that Grand Knights Day in January will bring back the magic and really increase our totals for the year. As you know, GK Day was early last year and that may have affected many councils. With GK Day occurring back in January, let s hope that we have a banner day in collecting YEP funds. If your council has not yet donated, it is never too late to do so. You have until June 30, 2014 to make this year s donation. April 5, 2014 is the deadline to make your donation and receive points towards the State Deputy s Award. If for whatever reason, your council is not able to meet your full quota, you can make a partial donation. Every council should try and find a way to support this program. You can even make several donations spread throughout the year. continued on page 5 $25,000 $10,262 3

State Deputy...continued from page 2 District Deputies. DD s can set up a group with councils and councils can set up groups within the council. This very unique feature allows you to conduct a meeting without being physically at the meeting. Think of the travel saved, time to drive, and many other inconveniences that can be avoided. Group Chats can be done when it is convenient with the members of the group, from home, office, using your iphone, ipad, or any device that you can access an internet connection. The KC Net TV Station is a subscription based site. But there are many features that are free of charge, such as the Rosary in English, French, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Many videos are free as well, we have an extensive training section, once again, this section is free to use. The monthly subscription is only $9.95 per month and is cancelable at any time, so your commitment is only month to month. That s only 33 cents per day. You may subscribe annually, we have a special for a Charter Membership for an annual price of $69.95, now that s only 19 cents a day and the subscription will not go up for the rest of your life as long as you renew the subscription. The Net TV Station is always adding content, so if you log on today and browse around, you may find something new the next day. We have awesome documentaries about Pope Francis, just go to categories and scroll down to Pope Francis and click. It is very easy to maneuver around the site. Please give our Net TV Station a chance, look around and subscribe, some of the proceeds will benefit the State Council and allow us the ability to do much more in documentaries, college ministries, talk shows, event filming, and much more. We also have a Jobs Finder Service that we are developing, we will be contacting business throughout the state who may be hiring, please let us know of any business that we can contact for our brother knights looking for work, this can be a wonderful feature for outreach and of course helping a brother knight in need. I also would like to mention that the KC Net TV Station is open to anyone. You do not have to be a member of the Knights of Columbus to subscribe. So invite your family members, parish friends, and anyone not yet affiliated with the Knights of Columbus to subscribe to the Net TV Station. I am confident that our Net TV Station will have unlimited outreach to Church Ministries, Youth, Organizations, Businesses, and much more, so please join us today. One more thing about the Chat Room and Group Chat, in the next few months we will be adding a feature that will allow you to chat by digital video, so if you use an iphone, for example, you can actually see the individuals that you are chatting with, up to 10 can make up a group. This will really revolutionize how we communicate with each other. The Chat feature in its current state is awesome and very soon we will offer an upgraded version at no additional cost to our subscribers. On behalf of the State Officers and State Family, along with out families, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Holy New Year. Vivat Jesus! Ismael Gus Agosto Bishop s Program ima_agosto@suddenlink.net Grand Knights, Council Officers, District Deputies, Area Coordinators, and Brother Knights I start this December report by reminding ourselves that the Bishop s Programs has no set rules. Councils and Assemblies are working together to assist the Bishops, by working with the Parish Pastor and Diocese, with programs through monetary funds and man-hours. December and Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. Yes time does not stand still and as we all know that nothing in life stays the same. We are surrounded by many things that are different each day and the differences require a great deal of transition on our part for assisting others reach their goals. This means that we must find different ways to help since we find that so few things stay the same. What worked for us yesterday might not work in the same situation today. Become familiar with our parish church needs by working closely with our Pastors ( Councils and Assembly Chaplains). I had an asking for the address of the Seminarians colleges or Seminary. Please check with your Diocese Vocation Director for more information continued on page 5 4

Let s all continue to work together and do whatever we can to make this year a record year in the state of Louisiana. If you have any questions, please contact me at any time. Vivat Jesus! Ednamae & Peter Sahuc Culture of Life Chaircouple pfsahuc@lusfiber.net When most of us think about Evangelization we think about persons spreading the good news. We picture them talking to others about the gospel of Christ. In his first exhortation, EVANGELII GAUDIUM or The Joy of the Gospel released this past month, Pope Francis gives us a very different view of what it means to Evangelize or Proclaim the Gospel. The Pope begins with: The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church s journey in years to come. The document has little to do with talking and focuses more on action. This is very much in tune with what Christ told his Apostles, which is referenced in Chapter 10 of Matthew s Gospel. When Jesus commissioned his Apostles to go forth and spread the good news he said And preach as you go, saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand. But then he tells them, more importantly perhaps, Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the leapers, cast out demons. He wasn t sending them out to simply talk. He wanted them to be, and he wanted them to encourage those they encountered to be, men of action. In paragraphs 209 thru 216 of his exhortation, Pope Francis focuses on what he calls the most vulnerable in our society. The Pope references Matthew 25:40 and reminds us that as Christians we are called to care for the most vulnerable and calls us to recognize the suffering Christ even if it brings us no tangible or immediate benefit. In Matthew 25, Jesus is talking about heaven and provides two parables, the ten wedding attendants with their oil lamps who wait for the arrival of the bridegroom and the man who entrusts his property to his servants before going on a journey. In reading these biblical verses we can understand that the Lord provides us with many gifts and to those of us who receive these gifts, he expects much. continued on next page 5

Culture of Life continued from page 5 Continuing in his discussion of heaven, in Matthew 25:31 40, Jesus then warns us of the Day of Judgement. 31 When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. 32 All nations will be assembled before him and he will separate people one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. 33 He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right hand, Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take as your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, 36 Lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me. 37 Then the upright will say to him in reply, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you? 40 And the King will answer, In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me. In his exhortation, the Pope continues: Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. In reference to abortion, the Pope cautions us, I want to be completely honest in this regard. This is not something subject to alleged reforms or modernizations. It is not progressive to try to resolve problems by eliminating a human life. Then referring to those in a crisis pregnancy he tells us that we must do more for women who find themselves in this situation, saying, On the other hand, it is also true that we have done little to adequately accompany women in very difficult situations, where abortion appears as a quick solution to their profound anguish, especially when the life developing within them is the result of rape or a situation of extreme poverty. In the spirit of the Pope s message to all Christians, we pray that each of you as Knights of Columbus, help to meet the Holy Father s challenge to adequately accompany women in very difficult situations. The best way to do this is to offer your gifts of time, treasure & talent to your local pregnancy resource center. After all, your local center is best equipped to provide women who may be contemplating an abortion with the counsel & resources they need. So, please contact your local center and offer your assistance. Vivat Jesus. Darrell Ourso CYLA Chairman greenwillowbr@gmail.com Thanks to those who sent your CYLA Chair form by or mail. It s greatly appreciated! If you have not sent the form in to date please do so as timely as possible. Thanks also for your assistance and encouragement as I work through my first year as State Chair for CYLA. Past Chair Joel Ocmand has been remarkable in guiding me through the process! As we start a New Year let s all work together to make 2014 a great one for our Youth in many ways! It s time to promote and make the final push for CYLA to high school guidance counselors in all Catholic, private and public schools in your area. KC State Bowling February 8-9 February Bowl South, Houma Ralph Comeaux Council Director ralphcomeaux@att.com The first half of this fraternal year has been extemely busy with State Athletic Events. Softball, Horseshoe, Golf and Nine Ball drew large numbers of Brother Knights to various events throughtout the Louisiana Jurisdiction. The slate of Spring 2014 events have been scheduled and large numbers are expected in each of the upcoming events. The first event of 2014 year will be the Gumbo Cook Off, with the finals scheduled for Grand Knights Day, Saturday, January 11th, at Teurlings Catholic High School. 23 teams are scheduled to vie for top cooking honors with a menu of chicken, sausage and okra gumbo. Last years champions, Council 12997, New Iberia, will be in attendance to defend their crown. Two weekends, February 8-9 and February will be the dates of the 68th Annual KC State Bowling Tournament, scheduled for Bowl South, Houma. Tournament Chairman Larry Miller, expects record numbers, as the Southeast Louisiana always draws well. Our Mental Disability Fund Drive Campaign started April 1, 2013 and for this Fraternal Columbian Year it will end on March 31, For your council to receive the 15 points in the State Standings you must send your fund drive money into the State Council Office. 8 MDF...continued from page 7 councils would take the time to have a fund drive. Remember it is never too late to have a fund drive. What do you say Brothers, will you stand up and be counted as a Council that did not turn your back on these Citizens with Mental Disability in your area at a time when they really need all the help they can muster. We all know that times are bad, which makes the need more real. Look around your area and check in on the school, or organization that helps Citizens with Mental Disability and see how a fund drive could help, then go back to your Council and get the membership involved by having a fund drive to help them. As I have mentioned in my talks during this past year if you don t have a school or agency in your area for your Beneficiary then always remember there is Saint Mary s Residential Training Facility. It is now that time of year that our MDF Campaign is coming to a close for this fraternal year. If Your Council had a fund drive, your Council membership can then take pride in what your council has done in helping God s Special Citizens. MDF: A FUND DRIVE TO HELP. Stephen Hart Seminary Mission Fund heartfore@bellsouth.net First, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Now that the Seminarians are on break between semesters, it would be a good time to ask them to speak to the parishioners about the Seminary Mission Trips. If you have a Seminarian in your Parish, please ask him if it would be possible to speak during or after all Masses or at your Council meeting. Hopefully, this will help with your fund drive for the Seminary Mission Fund. Remember, you have until June 30, 2014 to send in your funds. If you wish to receive points in the State Deputy Award, you will need to conduct your fund raiser and send me your funds before March 31. Please remember to note the Diocese you are collecting from in the memo line of your checks. All funds should be made payable to: Louisiana State KC Council and mailed to me at 123 Iroquois Dr., Abita Springs, LA Vivat Jesus. 68th Annual State Bowling Tournament February 8-9 & Bowl South, Houma (L-R) Dennis Thompson, Mike Scott, PFC Louis Brownstein, DD Matthew Couvillion, Loyven Hebert, Sr., Louie Johnson, Terrence Carter, SSgt. 9 George Martin Squires Chairman 2013 has been a busy year for our Squires Program with events and potential new Squire Circles. Brusly, Bogalusa, Holy Cross in Lafayette, and Deridder Councils are in the process of starting a Squires Circle. This is a very positive direction for those Councils and the young men that will become Brother Knights as well as drawing closer to God and his great works. We know that there is always a Catholic young man that needs nurturing and developing into the best Catholic Leader he can possibly be. We have that program, please give us a chance to help you, help that young man. Please go to our website and get more information at Upcoming events for our Squires: January 18, 2014 Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Pro Life March 66th Annual KC State Basketball March Metairie Including N.O. We are changing our Retreat, to a Pro Life March due to certain circumstances. This still proves to be a great opportunity for these young men to promote our Catholic beliefs. If your Council wants to see what we do with the Squires, please come to one of our events and see us in action. I have attended several 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Degree exemplifications this year and have seen a few Squires take the next step and becoming a Brother Knight. Justin Bonvillain from Houma, Tyler Alleman from St. Amant, and a former Squire who went to college at McNeese St. University and played football, Jonathon Landry, who waited till after graduating to make his 2 nd and 3 rd Degree. It is never too late to become a member of the greatest Catholic Fraternal Men s Organization in the World. This year we are not having a Squires Scholarship Raffle, due to reduced amount of support. So we simply ask that if you wish to support this Squires program, please make a donation to our Squires Scholarship Fund and all donations go to our Scholarship for graduating High School Seniors. You can do so by sending your donations by sending a check made out to Louisiana State Squires, th St., Broussard, LA We will take your donations until May 30, 2014 so we can present it to our winners at the Squires Convention. We thank you for your support and dedication to this great Program! Vivat Jesus & Esto Dignus! A Deserving Honor Knights of Columbus Council 7568 honored Larry Hebert for years of dedication to the Knights of Columbus when they hosted their annual Honors Banquet and Memorial Mass. The evening was described as the most prevalent attendance, the Knights have ever seen. Father Thomas Voorhies of St. s Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Scott presided over the evening Mass. Following the Mass, family members, Knights, and guests enjoyed a seafood gumbo with eggs, potato salad, dinner roll, apple and cherry pie, and homemade desserts. The night was not short-lived as the Knights of Columbus honored Mr. Larry Hebert for his numerous years of dedication and service. The honor was long overdue for the local Scott pharmacist who has served over 62 years as a 4 th degree Knight for the Knights of Columbus. Grand Knight Harold Domingue along with new treasurer Norwood Menard along with attending Knights, and guests honored Hebert for his 33 years of dedication and service as treasurer for Council #7568. Larry Hebert graduated from Lafayette High School in 1947, spending ten years working as a shoe salesman. On February 1, 1951, Hebert became initiated with St. Genevieve Council #3202, as a lecture with the continued on pag 13 9

E. Richard Yandle Membership Director Let s Get Fired Up About Membership!! We are now closing in on the halfway mark of the Fraternal Year. We are currently at 674 on Intake and need 707 to be on track to meet our goal of We have done a good job of staying on track, but we need everyone to continue to recruit to the end-june 30, We need all Councils to continue to recruit at least one new member per month. We are still showing 118 Councils who have not yet recruited at least one new member this Fraternal Year! We need the District Deputies of these Councils to get with these Grand Knight and determine what assistance is needed to help these Councils attain their membership quotas. One easy way would be to contact those suspended and inactive members of the Council to attempt to get them reinstated. We have a listing from Supreme for all Councils of all inactive and suspended members with the most recent contact information. We still also have Welcome Back letters and questionnaires that are available for contacting these inactive and suspended members. You can also call on your Insurance Agents to assist you. Please help us to help those Councils with their recruiting efforts. Supreme has just recently sent a Membership Recruitment DVD to all Grand Knights to assist them with training their members about recruiting and membership. We need to promote this DVD and make sure that our Grand Knights are passing this valuable information on to Council members. This is a very professional presentation and provides valuable information regarding membership recruiting. Please make sure that every Grand Knight has received the DVD and is using it. We need to get everyone FIRED UP about Membership. To help us to do that, we have a new membership recruiting incentive for this Fraternal Year. Recruiters will get one chance for each new member they have recruited during the Fraternal Year. The more new Knights they have recruited (according to Supreme records), the more chances they will have to win. However, if you only recruit one new member, you will still have one chance to win. We will be giving away three Kindle Fire HDX tablets at KCLS. Bishop Herzog will draw EXEMPLIFICATION SCHEDULE All exemplifications in this schedule shall be conducted in the second and third degrees ONLY, by order of State Deputy John Boudreaux. Only those exemplifications approved by the State Deputy are listed and councils are Date District Deputy Host Council DD Malagarie Broussard DD Becnel Norco DD Rose Shreveport DD Ball Lake Charles DD Charpentier Houma DD Mayard Abbeville DD McCrossen Mandeville the three winning tickets. We will also award the District Deputy with the highest percentage of the membership quotas for his District with a $100 award. Supreme has also provided a Catch Up membership incentive to encourage all Councils to catch up to recruiting at least one new member per month. For those councils who have not recruited at least one new member per month so far this Fraternal Year, if they can catch up by December 31, 2013 they can earn an additional 52,000 VIP points. If they catch up by June 30, 2014, they can ear 26,0000 VIP points. Please continue to promote this Supreme Incentive. Many Council members and Grand Knights have said that they have asked everyone in the Parish and can t recruit any new members. They might want to try to recruit outside the Parish. They should encourage their members to recruit men they work with. They should also make sure that they encourage participation from the Parish and the general public to assist with charitable and work projects. It would help them to interact with other Catholic gentlemen who might be interested in learning more about the Knights of Columbus. We are called to evangelize-we need to go out into the community and promote our religion and our Order. 13 Hebert...continued from page 9 responsibility of bringing in guest speakers. It wasn t long before Hebert moved to a 4 th degree Knight on July 1, 1953, while attending Pharmacy School and serving in the Naval reserve. Hebert who was also a husband and father would attend school, while dedicating his time to the navy, but it was one incident that would change Hebert s future. A disagreement between Hebert and his commanding officer caused Hebert to type up his own discharge papers. At the time I was studying for finals, so my focus was graduating from Pharmacy School, said Hebert. For Hebert, this was the best decision he could have made, for little did he know shortly after, the Vietnam war begin. Larry Hebert graduated from Pharmacy School in 1961, where he began working part time at Scott Pharmacy. Scott Pharmacy opened in 1919 by Mr. Vianneg Mouton, owning the Rexall Drug Store for over 50 years. After Mouton s retirement, Hebert purchased the store in Scott Pharmacy is still the oldest drug store in Lafayette and still under the direction of Hebert and his one and only daughter Jo Ann Tanner. Daughter Jo Ann followed in her father s footsteps, graduating as a Pharmacist form NLU, Monroe, in In April of 1980, Hebert became a charter member of Council #7568, participating with Scott Founder s Day, Trail Rides, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, St. s Peter& Paul s Annual Fish Fry, St. s Peter & Paul Fundraiser Committee, and with St. s Peter & Paul Catholic School. In 2002, Hebert became a widower, losing his beloved wife and partner Lucille to leukemia. Hebert s hard work and dedication received recognition in 2011 from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. As a child delivering for a Pharmacy, I felt accomplished helping the sick and well, I enjoy my service to the public, not only do I share the stories, but I also share the sickness too, said Hebert. Not only does Hebert continue to run Scott Pharmacy, located at the corner of St. Mary Street and Avenue E next to the railroad tracks, he also volunteers his services and medicine to the Lafayette Community Health Care Clinic, from 6-8 p.m. Bishop Herzog to host Pilgrimage to Rome for Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII April 25 to May 2, 2014 Frank Chase Forms Chairman chasefajjj@aol.com We are starting a new year, and with a new year comes the 2014 forms to submit. January 31st is the deadline for the Fraternal Activity Survey #1728 and this form helps keep our councils tax free. February 15 th is the deadline for the Semi-Annual Council Audit #1295. Make sure that the forms are sent on a PDF or JPEG file. Supreme requires a compatible format to accept your form. The forms can also be mailed or faxed. Supreme still has 22 councils listed as not receiving the Service Program Personnel Report #365 and 62 Audits. Please send in all delinquent forms as soon as possible.
