2 GOOD MORNING FAMILY..thoughts from DAVID When I take a look at the life of Joseph, I find one quality that continuously jumps out to me. It is his attitude. Joseph had a great attitude toward his circumstances. Many have come to me and have said about DeKalb Christian Church, Everyone s attitude is so upbeat and positive. And that is as it should be. I rejoice that we are such a strong and loving family. However, it can be very easy for us to separate our church life from our personal life. Everything at the church may seem hunky-dory, but that may not necessarily be the case in your personal life. I believe what Chuck Swindoll has said, Life is ten per cent what happens to me and ninety per cent how I react to it. The following story give us insight on how one young man chose to view his situation compared to others in the same position. In his book Peak Performers, Charles Garfield tells the story of a toll taker on the Oakland Bay Bridge. Driving up to the tollbooth one morning, Garfield heard loud rock music and saw the man inside the booth dancing. The toll taker gave Mr. Garfield his change without breaking rhythm, smiling as he did so. Curious, Mr Garfield returned to interview the man. I have a corner office, the toll taker said. Glass on all sides, I can see the Golden Gate, San Francisco, the Berkeley Hill. Lots of people come and vacation here every year, and I just stroll in every day and practice dancing. The other 16 tollbooths on the bridge were vertical coffins where people quietly survived their eight hours a day, the toll taker explained. He wanted to become a dancer, and his boss was effectively paying for his practice time in the booth. It all comes down to how you look at your situation and respond. You can respond by letting your circumstances drag you down, or you can respond by focusing on them by looking through the lens of God s Word. When we see our situations in the light of God s Word, we see that God is with us and we can respond positively. Joseph was able to respond positively. So was the Apostle Paul. In fact, Paul wrote these words while in prison. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4) He also wrote these words. Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things (Philippians 4:8). So, let s all choose to have positive attitudes in every area of our lives. Let s dance when the rest of the world is struggling even to walk. God IS with us. God IS good. Amen? Amen! BOARD MEETING Sunday, October 21 after Sunday School PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES BABY MEALS There is still time to sign up to help provide meals for new mothers. It doesn t happen too often but the mothers really appreciate this. Sign up in the lobbies or talk to Rhoda Kelley. We will be providing a meal for the DeKalb Jr/Sr High Teachers on Tuesday, October 16. If you would be willing to help, please let David Jordan or Linda PreJean know soon. CONTRACT for the USE of FACILITY SUNDAY SHOOL Our new and improved Sunday School program takes on OCTOBER 7 at 10:30 (after morning worship). We ask you to commit yourself to staying and participating in this important time of study in God s Word. We have a place for everyone (Nursery, Pre-K/K, 1 st - 3 rd, 4 th -6 th, Jr/Sr High, a women s class, and 2 adult classes). The board has written a Facility Use Policy for DeKalb Christian Church. If you would like to use our facilities for an activity outside of our regular church schedule, please check with the office about securing the building for your use. To help avoid conflict, we ask that your request be submitted a minimum of 45 days prior to your event. If you would like to see a copy of the policy, see David or Linda. THE CHURCH WINDOW PAGE 4

5 Lingering with Lawania OLD PERSON PRIDE 1. Old People are easy to spot at sporting events; during the playing of the National Anthem. Old People remove their caps and stand at attention and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe them. 2. Old People remember World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy, and Hitler. 3. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, The Cold War, the Jet Age, and the Moon Landing. They remember the 50 plus Peace-keeping Missions from1945 to 2005, not to mention Vietnam. 4. If you bump into an Old Person on the sidewalk he will apologize. If you pass an Old Person on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old People trust strangers and are courtly to women. 5. Old People hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. 6. Old People get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don't like any filth or dirty language on TV or in movies. 7. Old People have moral courage and personal integrity. They seldom brag unless it's about their children or grandchildren. 8. It's Old People who remove their hats while eating in a restaurant in respect for the ladies and guests. 9. It's Old People who know our great country is protected, not by politicians, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. 10.This country needs Old People with their work ethic, sense of responsibility, pride in their country and decent values. I WAS TAUGHT TO RESPECT MY ELDERS. IT'S JUST GETTING HARDER TO FIND THEM. THE CHURCH WINDOW PAGE 5
