We have wonderful volunteers who are doing their best to provide these services for our Chapter. Keep in mind that we also have day jobs that need our attention, and sometimes things do not move as quickly as we might prefer. Two addresses have been created for Chapter members use in communicating AGO concerns and issues. These are being checked daily: dean@kcago.com bombarde_editor@kcago.com OUR FALL ATCHISON DAY TRIP As I write this notice in August, we are in the middle of a heat wave and draught. By October 28 th it should be cool and colorful. Plan now to come with us on Saturday, October 28 th for a fall tour to historic Atchison, Kansas. Opportunity to voice your Suggestions on our Registration Forms resulted in a Registrar s report that many expressed a desire for our Chapter to sponsor more social events, and in particular an outing to Atchison. It has been requested several times. Those people were correct! My own daytrip to confirm plans for our Chapter trip revealed that the town, the Victorian homes, the churches, and their instruments are all gems. More complete information will appear in our October newsletter. The first 45 persons to respond may reserve a seat on our climate-controlled tour bus and experience a relaxing hour of fellowship during the trip. You may make your reservation NOW on our Chapter website or leave a phone message at From the Registrar Nan Hulet, Chapter Dean dean@kcago.com Please send your completed registration form and membership payment as quickly as possible. We want to be able to include you in the Chapter Membership Directory. Junia Braby, Chapter Registrar Your Gifts are Appreciated The purpose of the American Guild of Organists is to promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles, to encourage excellence in the performance of

4 organ and choral music, and to provide a forum for mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members. Your contribution helps to support this mission through educational programs, outreach, and member services that otherwise could never be accomplished through membership dues alone. Did you know that $50.00 of our $84.00 AGO registration fee is forwarded to National Headquarters? The Greater Kansas City Chapter retains $ Your additional contributions to our Concert Series allows us to continue providing the fine programming we all enjoy each month from September thru May. Your support of the Concert Series helps us accomplish the Mission of the Guild. Beyond the required dues, please consider contributing to the Greater Kansas City Chapter s Concert Series, and help ensure fine programming now and in future years, as well. PELZFEST Recital-HymnFest-Workshop be mentored by Model Church Musician / Composer DR. WALTER PELZ AGO s Season Opener / September Program Monday, September 18, 8:00 p.m. Immanuel Lutheran Church 1700 Westport Rd, KCMO Our kick-off AGO meeting is designed to stimulate and inspire us as church leaders, organist/musicians to bring energetic and enthusiastic ministry to our congregations particularly in this new fall season. The program will be a combination organ recital, hymn festival and opportunity to be mentored by the renowned church musician and teacher, Dr. Walter Pelz. The informality of the evening will be shaped to allow us to get to know Dr. Pelz as a composer for organ, choir, congregational song, and as a pastoral musician. Walter Pelz is Professor Emeritus of organ and church music at Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas and author of much published church music in use today. In presenting his music Dr. Pelz will instruct us in methods of being creative and inspiring in our music ministries. Luyben Music will provide a display of many of his published titles for perusal and for sale. A special choir (see the invitation, below) and ensemble of instrumentalists will assist in the collaborative presentation of his music of worship and praise. This meeting will be of special interest to organists, music leaders and clergy wanting to be more creative in bringing to life the meaning of the Word in texts set to classical, contemporary music. Our opening program of the season promises to be a celebration of the finest aspects of church music in recital and congregational song. Do plan to be present to listen, learn and make great music together, led by this sage of church music. This will be a great event to invite your clergy and choral singers to and let them see how you continue to learn to do your work. W. Ted Stewart PelzFest Choir Invitation To Clergy, Singers, Directors, Organists: How can you inspire your choir and congregation to find deeper meaning in the texts of hymns, songs and anthems? How can these works inspire your congregation? You are invited to come and experience the answers to those question by participating in a onerehearsal / one-performance choir which will lead the Monday, September 18 AGO Hymn Festival/Recital, guided by guest artist Dr. Walter Pelz. Dr. Pelz, well known as concert organist, composer and sage of church music, will include a special look at how we as church musicians can bring vitality and life to the songs of the church. The master class choir rehearsal will be Sunday, September 17, 4:30 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Westport Rd., KCMO. This rehearsal will be a mini workshop in rehearsing and inspiring singers to bring their songs to life, as well as preparation of the choir for the AGO Hymn Festival/Recital, to be held the following day: Monday, September 18, 8:00 p.m. Music will be both hymn concertatos and anthems written by Dr. Pelz. This choir is for organists, choir directors, choral musicians and singing clergy, as well! Here

5 is a chance to participate in a master class rehearsal to learn about inspiring real church music ministry. We guarantee that you will be pleased at becoming acquainted with this dynamic church musician / composer. It will be helpful to have an advance count of singers in order to have sufficient music. Please call Ted Stewart at (816) (or stewart.smith@att.net) to indicate how many of your singers (plus YOU!) will be participating. Please call by end of day, Monday, September 11. Rehearse: Sunday, September 17, 4:30-6:15 PM AGO Festival: Monday, September 18, 8:00 PM. Where: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Westport Rd. KCMO W. Ted Stewart Officers GKCAGO Chapter Officers elected and announced at the Dinner-Meeting on May 17 th, 2006 and installed by Dr. John Obetz at the June Dinner- Meeting. Dean Sub-Dean Secretary Treasurer Registrar Nan Hulett Sharon Hettinger Carol Wallace Sally Livengood Junia Braby Class of 2009 Stephanie Henry - Ann Posey - Eddie Straub Auditors: Mark Langdon and Dale Ramsey David Diebold observes 25 th Anniversary at Country Club Christian Church On August 9, 1981 DAVID DIEBOLD played services for the first time for Country Club Christian Church. On August 13, 2006, twenty-five years later, the Chancel Choir honored him and his wife Susie with the presentation of a commissioned text written by John Thornburg titled Founder of All Joy. Additionally the text has been set by English composer Jonathan Willcocks. The 5-minute anthem is accompanied by string quartet, flute and organ. The presentations were made at a party in David s honor in a choir member s home. Planners and choir members managed to keep the commissions a secret from David, and he was taken completely by surprise. During the evening of the party the choir sang the piece for him as well. Since David was on Sabbatical May, June and July, the choir had been able to rehearse without his knowing. There was even a secret rehearsal one evening after he had returned from his travels. On September 17, during the 8:30 and 11:00 worship services, the anthem will be sung. Following the 11:00 a.m. service, the church will hold a reception in the Social Hall for David and Susie. At that time, a gift box full of letters from friends both nearby and far away will be presented to him. It is rare especially these days for a musician to serve a congregation for 25 years. A special quality of personality plus a combination of strong musical and pastoral skills makes this possible, and David is abundantly gifted in all these areas. Country Club Christian Church honors and celebrates David s milestone in our community. Dale Ramsey Organ Dedication Recital The newly-refurbished organ at First Presbyterian Church in Olathe, Kansas will be dedicated, along with the remodeled sanctuary, Sunday, September 24, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. The 1968 Reuter pipe organ has been significantly enhanced through the installation of a Rodgers console that integrates fully with the existing pipe organ. The installation was done by Contemporary and Classic Church Organs of Kansas City, Missouri. The congregation is presenting their resident organist, CAROLYN STEELE, in recital. All are cordially invited to this exciting celebratory event at 621 S. Lee, Olathe, Kansas.

6 Research Assistance Request Dear AGO Colleagues, Greetings from Jacksonville, Alabama. I am the Director of Choral Activities at Jacksonville State University in northeast Alabama. I have begun a research project to assemble a database of Alabama composers of choral music. This includes composers who were born/raised/educated in Alabama as well as composers who spent a significant portion of their creative/professional career in Alabama. The first step in my research is identifying these composers as well as locating where their choral music is archived. I have mailed out a survey to gather this information to all college/university music departments in Alabama, but input from the outside the state might yield further information. I would appreciate it if you could share the details of my project with your AGO chapter. attached is a copy of the letter and survey that I sent out earlier this month. An online survey is available at the following Jacksonville State University link: Thank-you for your time. Dr. Patricia Corbin Director of Choral Activities Jacksonville State University David L.
