1 BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS VOL. 0607, NO. 6 MARCH 2007 From Our Chapter Dean For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come. Spring is coming! I think we are all glad to experience warmer temperatures, and anticipate the beauty of the earth s renewal. I hope you were able to attend our February meeting and enjoy the recital provided by Dr. David Pickering of Graceland University, Music From the Heart. His program featured the music of composer Alice Jordan. Ms. Jordan s compositions for organ and instruments lend themselves to both service music and recital by organists with a variety of skill levels. We offer our appreciation to Dr. Pickering, and also to Dr. Richard Anderson who graciously assisted for the lovely Aria for Oboe and Organ. Thank you to Faith Lutheran Church, Jan Van Otterloo (Principal Organist), and their entire staff for hosting our meeting. March 19 th finds us at Country Club Christian Church for a program of Classical Jewish Music presented by Carlene Neihart, Tom Atkin, David Diebold, soloists, instrumentalists, choirs, and organ. We assure you that this will be a unique opportunity to experience beautiful music that we ordinarily would not have the occasion to hear. A poster for this event is accessible on our website and enclosed in the printed Bombarde. Our April event is being sponsored by AGO National Headquarters. We have had many questions regarding this, thus a brief history: Established in 1994, the Endowment Fund provides income to expand programs for leadership development among AGO members; educate new organists; and cultivate new audiences for organ and choral music. Tax-deductible contributions to the Endowment Fund are invested in perpetuity to produce continuing income support for essential Guild programs and educational projects. The AGO Gala was organized as a benefit for the AGO Endowment Fund. Past AGO Gala s honored Marie-Claire Alain (New York City, 2002), Judith and Gerre Hancock (New York City, 2004), David Craighead (Philadelphia, 2006), and this year, Dr. John Obetz is being honored in Kansas City on Sunday, April 15th. We are privileged to be invited to participate in this honor bestowed upon our friend and colleague. Please plan to attend the recitals at Community of Christ International Headquarters in Independence, MO which will begin at 3 p.m. at the Auditorium, and will continue at 4 p.m. at the Temple. The recitals are free to the public; a free-will offering will be taken. At 6 p.m., the AGO National Council will hold a Gala Reception at the Plaza Marriott, which will benefit the national AGO Endowment Fund. All the national officers from New York will be in attendance. Tickets for this event are $100.00, ($75.00 of which is tax-deductible) and need to be ordered from AGO National Headquarters by phone ( , ext. 4308) gala@agohq.org or online at The names of those attending will be published in the program booklet. This national AGO-sponsored event takes the place of our usual local, Greater Kansas City Chapter, Monday evening event for the month of April. A letter to our members from Frederick Swann, President of National AGO can be found on our <kcago.com> website. Please refer to it for further details. We hope that you will plan now to attend these events and support the AGO National Endowment Fund. Nan Hulett Dean
