1 BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS Dean: Mary Bronaugh Davis Sub-Dean: Chloe Stodt FROM THE DEAN: June 2014 Bombarde Editor: Roseann Penner Kaufman I have enjoyed serving as your Dean for Many things this year have been accomplished because we were all working together toward a common goal. The outstanding KCAGO Board made things happen! Immediate Past Dean, Claudette Schiratti, and Mario Pearson were instrumental in initiating our First Annual French Organ Festival. Preparations now are being made for the Second Annual French Organ Festival on August 24th. May this tradition last as long as Bachathon, which was celebrated for the 35 th time this May. Our monthly programs have featured various styles and subject matter. Organists outside our area were brought in to inspire us and they did their job well! One of the perks of being Dean was I actually got to meet Ahreum Han, Gregory Peterson, and Christopher Houlihan and share a meal with them. Our teamwork of co-sponsoring a program with KCTPO encouraged new friendships. I was invited to a KCTPO afterglow party where Dave Wickerham continued to entertain us on a home installed Wurlitzer theater pipe organ. What a treat! Tony Maglione s World Premier in October of The Mystic Trumpeter received so many raves that the entire performing group reassembled in May for the purpose of making a CD. At some point this will be available for us to obtain! Our January Jubilee encouraged Continuing Education and both members and guests left feeling rejuvenated. On top of that, the event drew 37 new members into KCAGO! Several commented that this is an event we need to present annually. Our tour to the Reuter Organ Factory made the day after Easter a fun time and a discovery of how pipe organs are assembled. The May Members Recital, using both organ and piano featured a wide variety of musical selections. A special KCAGO event upcoming on Monday, June 9, 2014 has been added to our planned schedule of events. Keep reading to learn more AND be sure to come. Mary Bronaugh Davis, Dean JUNE 9 th POTLUCK AND SOCIAL Please come to Celebrating New Members, an end-of-year potluck and social, on Monday, June 9 th, to welcome new members who joined our Chapter at the January Jubilee! We ll assemble for punchbowl and food setup at 6:00pm in Founders Hall, Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, 415 W 13 th St., KCMO, with dinner beginning at 6:30pm. Coffee/tea/water, paper products, and tableware will be provided. All attending are asked to bring a dish to share and serving utensil, plus any special or preferred beverage. Jan Kraybill and Paul Erickson will facilitate a conversation that allows all of us both new and longtime AGO members to share what we value about the Guild, and what our hopes and expectations of membership in AGO might mean for the future. Please or call Chloë Stodt (cstodt@htlenexa.org/ ) by noon on Wednesday, June 4 th, to reserve your spot. Name cards will be placed at each table, encouraging a commingling of newer members with those of lengthier tenure, therefore we DO need to know who s coming even though we won t be collecting any money. Don t miss this chance to express your culinary creativity and break bread with friends, both silver and gold! CARES & CONCERNS Anne Warzyn celebrated her 98 th birthday in early April, but soon after that passed away on April 26 th. Her memorial service was on May 17 th.
2 David Sachen, Music Director/Organist at the Cathedral of St. Peter and Organist/Choirmaster at St. John the Baptist passed away on May 16 th and his service was May 22 nd. Both of these long time members will be deeply missed. Ian McIntosh broke his hip on May 18 th. Prayers for his healing will be appreciated PROGRAMS ANNOUNCED The program committee has been working diligently since last fall, and we are pleased to announce the following programs for the GKCAGO program year: SUNDAY, AUGUST 24, 1:00-5:00 P.M. The proceeds will benefit the Annual Fund, which covers the expenses of educational programs, Pipe Organ Encounters, professional certification programs, competitions, conventions, January Jubilees, and other costs of running the organization. The auction will be run online so that all AGO members and friends may participate, and not just those attending the national convention. A number of members of the Council have already given items and services for the Silent Auction. - two round-trip coach airfares to Europe, two expensive bottles of wine, workshops, and CD recordings. The online auction will begin 1 June 2014 and end on 30 June PLEASE HELP US UPDATE INFOPAK SALARY GUIDELINES A committee will meet in June to update the salary guidelines in INFOPAK. May I ask you to report to us the following information about your church position? 1. Gross salary 2.Position you hold: Organist or organ + choir director? 3. Number of services each week and number of choir rehearsals 4.Perks? Health insurance? Retirement plan? Other 5. Does your church pay your AGO dues? 6. Number of years in your position 7. Do you have a contract? 8. Denomination of your position 9. In what area of Greater Kansas City is the church located? 10.How much are you paid for weddings and funerals?
4 The more information we have, the more accurate INFOPAK can be. You may send this information to me by at: If you prefer to remain anonymous, please mail your answers to me at: 7644 Baltimore Ave, Kansas City MO Or send it to others on the committee: John Ditto, Dale Ramsey, Claudette Schiratti, Ted Stewart, Marian Thomas, Ken Walker --- by June 10, please! Thank you, Barbara Adler THE CLARENCE DICKINSON SOCIETY (CDS) -- submitted by Barbara Adler Have you looked at the names of the Clarence Dickinson Society members listed in each issue of TAO? Happily, at least six members of our chapter are already members, and we sincerely hope that you will consider adding your name to the CDS roster to assure a strong financial future for our beloved AGO. Our own John Obetz was one of the CDS founders. Take a moment to think about AGO s role in your own career, the friendships you have gained in this wonderful chapter, the educational meetings, the inspirational recitals. Perhaps you might want to leave a portion of your estate to help continue the expanding needs of the AGO. When I ask people to join, their response often is, I don t have a large estate so I m not eligible. The truth is that your planned gift can be in any amount -- or percentage of your assets. Setting up your bequest is a simple process. The easiest way is to name the AGO as one of the beneficiaries of your IRA, TSA, or 401(k). If you want your family to inherit most of your estate, as I do, please consider allocating a small percentage of your retirement account -- maybe 10%? 5%? If you leave a retirement account to AGO, the gift is tax-free, but your family must pay the taxes on a retirement account. For this reason, I have designated that AGO will receive a portion of my IRA. Another option is a percentage of your life insurance policy. You may, of course, name the AGO in your will, or adding a codicil to an existing will. You may specify that funds go into AGO s Endowment or to the Annual Fund. Annual dues cover only about 60% of the annual budget. I can make other suggestions, so please feel that you may contact me once you have made the decision to join CDS. My address is: Barbara.Adler@gmail.com Please notify F. Anthony Thurman, Director of Development and Communications, who can guide you through the process so you that your wishes will be carried out. Then you will be listed on the CDS roster in perpetuity. His is: fathurman@agohq.org or contact him at AGO Headquarters at 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 1260, New York, NY Thank you so much for considering a permanent gift to the Guild. It is my dream that every AGO member will leave at least 1% to the AGO. Here is some background information from the AGO website: A founder of the AGO and the School of Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary, Clarence Dickinson ( ) was known as the Dean of American Church Musicians. Dr. Dickinson organist and choirmaster, composer, virtuoso, performer, author, lecturer, and teacher worked in all his capacities to broaden appreciation of organ music and reach new audiences. He worked tirelessly to improve the quality of church music, even as he celebrated his 90th birthday conducting a large choral festival at The Riverside Church in Manhattan. Clarence Dickinson s legacy will forever uphold a standard of excellence in church music. In 1997, 16 members of the Guild became charter members of the Clarence Dickinson Society by including the AGO in their will or estate plans. They were Lorene S. Banta, Muriel W. Crowley (deceased), Paul J. Danilewski, Harriet L. Dearden, Winifred Howe, Edwin H. Holmberg, Jr., Joel H. Kuznik, Wm. A. Little, John Obetz, Helen A. Osterberg,
5 W. James Owen, Frank J. Poole, Jr., Peggy Kelley Reinburg, Charles L. Smith, Jr., Frederick Swann, and Clementine Miller Tangeman. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all these visionaries. Membership in the Society grows each year. By including the AGO in their will or estate plans, these individuals have displayed a public commitment to the mission of the Guild that will transcend their earthly life. Their bequests will forever be a living testimony to their belief in the work of the American Guild of Organists. Your legacy can do the same. Won t you join us?
