2 Page 2 JUNE 2017 MUCC News The other day I was driving down the road and saw a turtle trying to negotiate traffic to get to the other side. He was obviously moving at a turtle s pace. As cars and trucks came whizzing by he would tuck back into his shell and hope for the best. I did manage to pull off the road and after dodging traffic and risking life and limb, I scooped up the little dude and helped him reach his destination. He wasn t real happy with me as he gave a very unkind hiss. I was careful this time not to let him urinate on me. I held him to my side not out in front of me. I learned this technique after a far less pleasant encounter with our shelled friends a few years back. Later, I thought about my little friend that I encountered on the road and wondered if he had managed to stay in the woods or made a not so wise U-Turn after I left. As I gave it more thought I realized life is a lot like that. On this journey of life we often get ourselves into tough spots, sometimes downright dangerous ones. We have all been there at some time in our lives. And I thank God that He was there to guide and assist me often times when I didn t even realize it. He has done the same for you as well. God is good all the time! So what can we learn from this common encounter? We must do for others as I did for the little angry turtle, and you have done as well I m sure, and guide others to safety. That may involve helping the drug addict, the widow, the single mom, the lonely child, the spiritually lost. The point is that we are all on this ride through life together and Christ has called us to love each other. I believe the world could use a lot more of that. Don t you? Let us remember what Paul said, and I took the liberty to paraphrase: I could know all things, all the mysteries of life, speak in all the language of heaven and earth, and even predict the future. But if I don t have Love its all meaningless. My life is empty. So brothers and sisters, the next time you see the turtle on the road or your brother and sister in need, stop what you re doing and help them. God will be pleased. These are just my thoughts for the day. I love you all in Christ. Blessings, Pastor Greg Special thanks to all the men who helped honor our MUCC mothers on Mother s Day at our Pancake Breakfast! These pictures are worth AT LEAST 1000 words!!!

Hostess: Laura Smith June Women s Summer Conference Location: Black Lake Retreat Center, Asheboro, NC Strengthening the Church Offering Sunday, June 4. Monticello Church again this year will continue its support of the UCC s Strengthen the Church Special Mission Offering. With our gifts, we invest in the future of Christianity! These funds largely support youth ministries and full-time leaders for new churches in parts of the country where the UCC voice has not been heard. As Christianity is changing, God calls our congregations to be the church in new ways. Your generosity will plant new churches, awaken new ideas in existing churches and develop the spiritual life in our youth and young adults. Now more than ever, our support is vital to support ways the church can have an impact on the world around us! On Sunday, June 4, won t you take the opportunity to add your gift - and prayers - to the work of this very important UCC ministry?!

6 Page 6 JUNE 2017 MUCC News Thanks to everyone... who helped in the Yard Sale, Bake Sale, and Hot Dog Lunch last month. We made about $ for the Outlet children s ministry and our Outreach Missions Fund. Special thanks to Jerry Faucette for providing the hotdogs, the grill and the great cooking. Thanks to all others who donated items, helped set up and take down, prepared delicious goodies for sale, and those who braved the cold and blustery conditions to help in various ways. As always, when we work together, great things happen! (And we have fun too!) SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS SERVICES FEATURE INSPIRITUAL SPEAKERS & MUSIC Monticello UCC held its Spiritual Emphasis Services May 7-9. Our theme Psalm 51, vs. 10 states Oh God, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. It was a rewarding, spiritual three night event. On Sunday night we had our largest audience with a former interim pastor and one of our favorite speakers Rev. John Dieterly. His message David Stayed Home gave great insight into a very interesting story from the Bible and reflected Rev. Dieterly s belief and call for us to daily read and learn from -and live by - the Bible. The music by Natalie Jobe, a music teacher at Monroeton School and her family was very entertaining and we loved hearing all the hymns and different instruments they played.. Monday night Jed Lambeth did a great job playing the guitar and singing several songs including The Old Rugged Cross and Softly, Gently Jesus is Calling. The speaker Pastor Chris Mundy s message Do We Have It encouraged us to really look at - and strengthen our faith and relationship with God. Sunday night Rev. Carl Pulliam opened the service by singing and leading the congregation in singing guitar. His message Responsibility : how we responsible for ourselves first, then to each other, church and to God. Lavinia and Crystal closed the service by singing a beautiful duet. Thanks to our speakers, musicians, and Committee members Cari Wilson, Ernestine Chrismon, Tammy Turner, Becky Bishop and Pastor Bouck for their work in putting the services together with me. Editor s Note: The beautiful flowers on the altar were in loving memory of Phil Lambeth. by Dot Lambeth with his was on are

9 MUCC News JUNE 2017 Page 9 Jimmy Sloan will complete his weekly chemotherapy treatments this month. A PET scan will follow to evaluate how the treatment has worked. Jamie and Hunter Smothers will be going on a trip to Africa in July. The trip will include lots of adventure with safaris, walking with lions, elephant riding and cage diving with sharks. Part of their trip will be going into villages and they look forward to donating items to the people they meet along the way. They will be able to take 2 extra suitcases that they plan to fill with items they have learned these people need. Jamie and Hunter are inviting our church members to donate items and/or especially to pray for them and for the people they will encounter along the way. Items needed include: shoes and socks (especially for kids); crayons and coloring books; deflated soccer balls and other types of sporting balls or equipment; small toys for the children; clothes for children and adults; book bags; any other items you believe would be helpful. Donated items can be placed in designated boxes in the sanctuary. Also, Ernestine and Donnie Chrismon s grandson Gabe is serving in Afghanistan. He and his troop are involved with a school where 40 children have no pencils or paper and are writing with sticks in the dirt. His family and church family are getting together a donation of pencils, paper, crayons and coloring books to send to this school. If you would like to donate to this project, a box is located on the front pew in the MUCC sanctuary. Christian sympathy and love to Jordan Lambeth and wife Kathryn and family and friends in the passing of Jordan s stepdad Randall Barham on May 27th in Reidsville. Church Renovations Update: The columbarium is now complete and several niches have already been purchased! Jerry Smith and his committee members Jim Dixon and Dick Faucette have worked hard to make this burial alternative a reality at Monticello Church. If you are interested in finding out more about the columbarium, please see Jerry Smith or a committee member. The lift chair is installed and operational! Gail Smith was the first to give the new lift a try. A portable ramp now provides smoother access from the porch into the narthex. Removal of pews, Installations of new carpet, and work on the front of the sanctuary is to begin in July. Thanks to our trustees and everyone who is helping with these exciting projects!
