2 C H I L H O W E E B A P T I S T M E S S E N G E R C H A R M Page 2 God Can Use an Ice Cream Cone A white van pulled into the parking lot of Townsend IGA, where a team from First Baptist Elizabethton was giving away ice cream cones and washing windshields. Six stairstep kids and three adults spilled out of the van and walked toward the front door. As they approached, they heard an unusual question. Would you like a free ice cream cone? one of the team members asked. You can guess the answers. With ice cream cones in hand, and licking furiously in a race with 90-degree temperatures, the kids drifted over to the table to get free First Aid kits, and Bibles. One of the adults thanked the team and then began to tell this story: The family was camping in Cades Cove. They came into Townsend to an ice cream shop but learned that a single cone was $3. The math wouldn't work for nine people to have ice cream, so they loaded up again, disappointed, and drove on to pick up supplies at the IGA grocery. And there, on the hot pavement, wearing matching blue tee shirts with lanyards, were seven friendly people, each one encouraging the family to have a FREE ice cream cone. -Free because the team was serving Jesus by serving people. -Free because salvation is free to all, though it cost Jesus dearly. -Free because it is a practical way to show God's love. The vacation will end and the family will ride their van back home. No doubt in years to come they'll talk about their family vacation in the Smokies. The probability is high, wouldn't you say, that one of the memories will be getting a free ice cream cone and a message that Jesus loves them. Missions can be simple. It should be fun. It's always rewarding. We invite you to pray for the teams that will be coming all summer to show God's love to people who live, work and play in Townsend. We had about 250 families who came to hear the Gospel and pick up new towels and cleaning supplies. It is always great to be able to share with such a great number who need to hear about our resurrected and living Savior. Pack a Pack school supply distribution will be coming very soon. Letters have been mailed to the churches and if you need a copy and have not seen one, please let us know and we will get it to you. Please follow the instructions on the letter and it will help us greatly. We are very thankful for those who bring the supplies as it gives us a great opportunity to share the Gospel to all who receive the back packs. Our Happy Birthday Jesus celebration will be held Dec 10 th 2016 but will be different from our former toy distribution. We will not be asking for toys this year. We will be distributing Christmas food packages with back packs for kids. The back packs will be furnished by the Appalachian Regional Ministries and will be filled with school supplies, snacks and clothing items for the kids by age. Each will have a toy included with the backpack. We will need help with collecting food items for a complete Christmas dinner and we will include a certificate for turkey or ham with the food box. Please read the letter that was sent out to the churches with the school supply information and be on the lookout for more information as we try to make this adjustment. Call if you have questions. Reconciled Ministry is doing well as we meet each week to encourage, advise, and assist those who have been affected by incarceration or who are in need of jobs, housing, and transportation. We have a meal each Thursday at 6pm and service to follow. If your church would be interested in helping with our meals, please let us know. 5 V O L U M E 5 I S S U E 4 Page 5 W M U Greetings in the name of Jesus! First off I want to apologize for not having an article in the last newsletter. I have had some health issues going on. I want to thank each and everyone of you that participated in the cereal drive for TBCH. That is the first time I have asked for that to be done and I was overwhelmed with the support of this from 22 of our 80 churches and 1 Knox County Church. I believe in giving credit where credit is due so here is a list of the churches that participated Bethel, Meadow Brook, Providence, East Maryville, Liberty, Central Point,Tuckaleechee Chapel. Calvary Alcoa, Oak Street, Maple Grove, Beech Grove, West Maryville, Mt. Zion, Dotson, Piney Level, Niles Ferry, Oak View, Salem, Pilgrim, Central Alcoa, Stock Creek, and Alleghany. Also one church we didn't get the name of because it was taken to the Baptist Center. Seven Islands from Knox County also participated. I want to recognize Alleghany Baptist Church for bringing the most cereal in. They brought 268 boxes, one of our small churches did outstanding. We will be doing this again next year, so start saving your cereal money and lets do more than this yr. They were so appreciative. We took it to Brentwood Campus and they were going to share with other campuses as the leaders from each campus were going to all be coming together in Brentwood for a meeting the next week after we took it. If you see Linda Albert from the Daily Times, please thank her for the great article she put in about this project. State WMU Leader training (Equipping Missions and Ministry Leaders) will be held at Lenoir City Baptist Church in Lenoir City TN on Saturday, August 27, 8:30-1:00. This is Fellowship, inspiration, motivation and training for new and experienced church missions & ministry leaders as we begin the new year. For more information visit or you can contact me. On August 6th, several adjoining associations will be having a Prayer Walk on the UT campus in Knoxville with the Baptist Collegiate Ministries. We would like everyone to participate and help us pray for this ministry there. If you can't walk, there will be things you can pray for in the Building. For more information, please contact me. As of right now, we will just be having 2 meetings a year instead of quarterly meetings for Women On Mission/Adult On Mission due to the small attendance that we have. It is hard to bring a speaker in and have 5 people in attendance. We will have these meetings in April and September. More in next newsletter. WMU Director International Community Development Training If you, your church or group are interested in addressing overseas needs such as poverty, hunger and poor health, BGR offers a two to three-day training that teaches the community development process in a participatory setting. Group activities combined with some lecture time will allow participants to learn new tools to be used to enable the community to help themselves. We will introduce and practice various community development tools in small groups and in a field practicum setting. New ideas and resources will be shared from the trainer and trainees experiences. The entire training is based on a Biblical Four Basic Training Modules: Introduction to community development Community development tools Community Entry to Exit Field Practicum perspective. Schedule The training will begin at 6 pm on Friday evening. The training course will be finished by 5:00 pm on Saturday. Lunch will be provided on Saturday Register through First Baptist Powell. 6 Page 6 C H I L H O W E E B A P T I S T M E S S E N G E R CAMP TIPTON The sun is shining and on another summer at Camp Tipton! Our Summer Day Camp and Adventure Camp are experiencing record highs in attendance! Last week we had 66 in total attendance! Of that number, 16 of those were in our Adventure Camp for 5th through 8th graders. They spent the week rock climbing and learning about faith and trust. One of the young men in this group, started the week very hesitant about heights but finished the week climbing a 40 foot rock blind folded. We talked about the difference in faith and trust. Faith is knowing you can trust the rope and the one holding it. Trust is about climbing the mountain. Our Summer Day Camp (K-5th), in the same week, was themed around Build It! They focused on building there lives on the firm foundation of Christ and His word, while learning to build with their hands and imaginations. Please keep Camp Tipton and its staff in your prayers this summer. They will be sharing Christ, teaching Bible verses and stories every day this summer. In the heat trying to reach the hearts. Camp Tipton is looking for opportunities to share what we do with the churches in our association. We would love to join you for worship, fellowship, or mission time and share how God is blessing this ministry. Please call us at to set up a time. Teams will be sharing through Storying and beginning a discipleship process among new believers. At present Chilhowee Baptist Association is the only missionary contact to the Maninka (an unreached people group). NEW Weekend Opportunities!!!!!! Dayton, Ohio Hope Community Church pastor Randy Chesnutt is seeking small teams to serve on weekends. Teams would work in area parks and prayer walk on Saturdays and then host a family night activity at the church or in a local home. Lodging can be in a local church or hotel based on preference.
