1 A Ray of Hope A Ray of Hope 1 September January Monthly Newsle er of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church 5728 Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55417, Ministers of the Gospel: The Bap zed 88 years in ministry Volume 85 Number 1 Making Christ Known through the Spirit of Hope There We Went aa-caroling on Saturday, December 19! Spreading the Spirit of Joy through the voices of Hope! On one of the chilliest days of our winter thus far, fi3een carolers from Hope serenaded six of the homebound members of our faith community with melodies of favorite songs of Christmas. These songsters spread the Spirit of Christmas Joy through the familiar tunes of this blessed season, and this gi3 of beau-ful music was enthusias-cally received, not only by our congrega-on members at their homes, but by many of their neighbors, as well. Our carolers thoroughly enjoyed a funfilled a3ernoon of fellowship with one another, from joining their voices in song, to sharing the stories and laughter as Charlie Olson and Marlon Karbo ensured safe travels from place to place, and finally, warming up with hot chocolate and cookies at the home of David Langemo and Drew Schmidt. We hope you ll plan to join the Hope Carolers next Christmas season! Happy New Year! January 2016 Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church Annual Mee ng, Part 2 January 24, 2016 following the 10am Worship Service All vo-ng members of Hope Lutheran Church are requested to a end the second half of the Annual Mee-ng in the sanctuary following worship on Sunday, January 24, Thank you in advance for your par-cipa-on and commitment to Hope. NOW HEAR THIS! We need one or more volunteers to operate the Church Sound System one or two -mes a month during services. We provide free training and a guaranteed seat at the service! Reply to the church or to me, Jim Nunn, at or mnnunns@comcast.net Offering Envelopes There are a few left on the welcome table in the gathering area. Please pick yours up. Thank you!

2 2 Inten onal Interim Pastor Chris ne Wenzel Dear Friends, I have been so red of hearing the rhetoric around Muslims and Chris ans, much of which I have found to be very disturbing. According to CBS news, Muslims in America are facing waves of an -Islamic sen ment ranging from poli cal rhetoric to some mes verbal and physical violence. The Council on American-Islamic Rela ons stated last month that they had received more reports of crimes against Muslims and Islamic ins tu ons across the United States at the end of November than any other period since 9/11. Pastor Chris ne Wenzel CBS News spoke with Muslims from different ethnic backgrounds about what it's like living as a Muslim in the United States today. Each person spoke about the tensions and uncertainty that many of them and their fellow Muslims are living through. Here is just one experience. Imam Khalid La f, Pakistani Muslim -- New York City police chaplain, Execu ve Director of New York University Islamic Center, and N.Y.U University chaplain "The reality is that many of the narra ves that we might consciously or unconsciously make decisions by are those that are pre y antagonis c. They teach us to not really understand the other, but to always be cau ous of the other. "Just like you don't have to be of any specific group to stand for that group, you don't have to be Muslim to stand-up for Muslims. And when we find and recognize that an a ack on one of us is an a ack on all of us we will start to see a categorical change in difference in a way that this society func ons." We have an opportunity to hear from several Muslims in a new class beginning in January: 5 Week Class begins January 6on Wednesdays 6:00-7:00pm Led by Pastor Chris ne The Jesus Fatwah: Love Your (Muslim) Neighbor as Yourself Much of what passes for informa on about Islam is weed-like disinforma on rooted in stereotype and watered by fear. In this DVD series, seventeen Islamic and Chris an scholars offer reliable informa on about what Muslims believe, how they live out their faith, and how we all can be about building rela onships across the lines of faith. January 6: Islam 101: Some of what you need to know about Islam. January 13: Misconcep ons about Islam: Adjust your malarkey filters. January 20: Islam in America: Meet people who love America and pray towards Mecca. January 27: Making Connec ons, Part 1: Non-Muslims make a case. February 3: Making Connec ons, Part 2: Muslims have their say. You are in my prayers. Thank you for yours! Pastor Chris ne Adult Forums Join us at 9:00am each Sunday in the fellowship hall as Pastor Doug Morton shares the scripture lessons for the day and gives us a bit of insight on the people and the events of Biblical mes in prepara on for the sermon. These sessions are always interes ng! A Ray of Hope is published monthly by Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church ELCA 5728 Cedar Ave. S.
