Volume 32 Number 04 August 1, 2014 District No Dr. Drew Cahoon Dentistry in Africa Bev Gallagher introduced our speaker, Dr. Drew Cahoon, who spoke to us about dentistry in Uganda and Rwanda. He began working in Africa in February 2005 when he and his daughter went to Uganda with Rotary. Their thought was to work at a few orphanages and hospitals, before returning to Raymond, Alberta, with the conviction that they had completed their humanitarian service in Africa. However, while in Uganda, Dr. Cahoon became convinced that he had much more to offer, and committed to return to Uganda twice a year for the following five years. He met with the faculty of the Department of Dentistry of Makerere University s Health Sciences college in Kampala, and surveyed its dental chairs, which were donated to the school in 1968 by the Danish government. These chairs were at least 32 years old at the time, and only five of forty-one chairs were in good working order. They dreamed of renovating the clinic, which would involve acquiring twenty new chairs plus new X-ray equipment, and resolved to reopen the clinic by August Dr. Cahoon raised $1,200,000 in donations from many individuals, plus thirteen organizations, including the Rotary Foundation. With the help of Dentaid UK, and Jeremy Pryer of Victoria, he was able to successfully train a number of technicians and restore some of the used dental equipment. The Ugandan Education ministry led the renovation of the dental school s building and the new equipment was installed. The grand opening took place on schedule, and budget, on August 3, Since that time, Dr. Cahoon has teamed up with Deseret International and the Academy of LDS Dentists to provide several lectures to the Uganda Dental Association, and courses at Mulago Dental School. He thought that his next project would be in India, but he was visited at Mulago by faculty from Kigali Health Institute, who convinced him to go to Kigali and help to develop the dental profession in Rwanda. Since 2009, Dr. Cahoon has brought many dental practitioners to Rwanda to offer dental training in that country. He and his sponsors have provided tens of thousands of dollars of dental equipment and instruments to course participants and their clinics in Rwanda. The Meeting The meeting began when our head table arrived to vigorous hand clapping, as there was no piano accompaniment this week. Club president Ron Esch provided opening remarks on the world wide importance of Rotary in view of the conflicts currently afflicting parts of the world. Ann Toombs then led us in an a cappella rendition of O Canada, and delivered an invocation that built on the theme from Ron s opening remarks. Trevor Axworthy presented the club with banners from the two Rotary clubs he visited in Christchurch, New Zealand while on route from the International Conference in Sydney. Both Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton dined at Christchurch club before departing on their Antarctic adventures. Hatice, sister of our own Yegana Alasgarova, presented a banner from her home Rotary club in Baku, Azerbaijan. Larry Shelley told an amazing story of an informal dinner that club member Lou MacEachern put on at his place in Prince Edward Island. He offered his personal greetings to each of the 150 guests invited to his dinner. Ron Esch presented a special Paul Harris pin to Eva Friesen to mark her tenure as Club President in our Centennial year. Doruk Ozulu, a visiting Rotarian from Istanbul, Turkey, exchanged banners with Ron Esch. That makes four banners we received this week! Ron Esch then thanked this week s entrance volunteers: Gord Cumming and Sean Baylis, Bill Gillott (coffee ticket sales), greeter Barbara Young, and our Sergeant-at-Arms Lorne Larson. He also thanked this week s COG Sponsor Bill Redmond of Bucars RV Centre. George Edworthy is our longest-serving (51 years) active member. As a car buff, George has collected twenty-one vintage automobiles, and the time has come for him to pass on his collection. He would like to provide Rotarians with first-chance opportunities to acquire some of his cars, and has offered to donate ten per cent of any proceeds to the Rotary fellowship. Eric Bennett announced our visitors and guests, as well as club members celebrating birthdays this week. The biographies of our birthday celebrants that Eric reads out this week are researched by Bob Ermter. A big thank-you goes out to Bob for allowing us to get to know each other a little better. In a similar vein, Eric took to the podium to describe his relationship with Rotary as part of our club s member engagement initiative. A letter was read on behalf of the Alberta Association for Community Living and the Rotary Partnership to thank us for our efforts in creating employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. Allan McMillan and David Hood were acknowledged for creating one position each in their organizations. In recognition of this, Allan, David and the Rotary Club of Calgary have been awarded the Frank Devlyn award.

3 Rotary Youth Exchange We are pleased to welcome Tony Howard to the Youth Exchange Committee. Simon Peer (this year s adopted son) arrives in Calgary on Aug. 22 nd and will reside with Craig and Michèle Henderson until Oct. 1 st, at which time he will move to Barb and Gerry Young's home. We tentatively have a host family for January and February 2015, but will still need one for March 1 st to mid-july.
