3 PBBWMWg *. THE PINCKNEY DISPATCH FSWATAe TfflBTEMTt) Jk W V v By ELMO SCOTT WATSON R yoa supersttous and do yoa beleve that Frday, the 13th, te a Jnx day? If so, yoa'd better begn worryng now, for there's" such a day n the offlus Frday, Aprl 13. Jn fact, the year 1928 sees to be better suppled wth ths onousto-soe-folks date than ost years. There was» one In January, the Aprl one wll oon be here and then there's another one dde agan n July. So t you're a belever n ths Superstton, you've got two ore such jnx days durng whch you'll need to watch your step, even If you dd escape dsaster on Frday, Jan nary 13. The avators whose pctures appear above probably would tell you that there's nothng n t, anyway. Hut f you needed addtonal reassurance here's a news Ite whch appeared n the Kansas Cty Star last January/ W A R R EN S B tffc'q, MO, Thrteen holds no terrors fqflcopper Noran, center on the Warrenaburg college basket-balj tea. The other nght he were sweater No. 13 a$d was the hgh ttan wth thrteen ponts, The gae was played on Frday, the 13th. Those who scorn the Frday the 13th superstton pont to the fact that, f t were as unlucky as It s supposed to be, Aercan hstory ght have been vastly dfferent fro what It has been. For nstance, away back at the begnnngs of ths republc a certnn Frday, the 13th, turned out to he a lucky day Instead of an unlucky one. For n October, 177. Kng fjeorge the Thrd ot England caused the Issuance of a proclaaton, callng for a day of prayer and fastng throughout the kngdo, ntended to brng about the defeat of the rebellous Aercan colonsts, who on a certan day, fn the precedng July, declared that they were "of rght and ought to be free and ndependent" fro the other country. That proclaaton, as prnted In the London Gazette of October 3, 1776, reads as follows: We, takng Into our ogt serous consders ton the just and necessary easures of force whch we art oblged to use aganst our rebellous sublets fn our coloneg and provnces In North Aerca and puttng our trust In Alghty God, that He wll Touchsafe a specal blessng on our ars both by sea and land, have resolved, fnd do, by and wth the advce of our prvy councl, hereby coand, that a publlck fast and hulaton be observed throughout that part of our kngdo of Great Brtan called England, our donon of Wales, and town of Berwck upon Tweed, upon Frday the thrteenth day of Deceber next; and so both we and our people ay huble ourselves before Alghty God, n order to obtan pardon of ousns: And ay, n the ost devout and lolen anner, send up our prayer* and supplcatons to the Dvne Majesty, for avertng those heavy judg-* ents whch our anfold sns and provocatons have ost justly deserved, and for plorng Hs nterventon and blessng speedly to delver our loyal aubjocts wltnln our colones and provnces n North Aerca fro the Volence, Injustce, and tyranny, of those darng rebels who have assued to theselves the exorcse of arbtrary power; to ope the eyes of those who have been deluded by specous falsehoods nto arts of treason and rebellon; to turn the hearts ot the authors of these calnljles, and fnally to restore our people In those dstracted provnces and colnnes to the happy condton of beng free subject* c( a Mle of Rbbon It s reported that there s a process eployed n England for akng etallc rbbon at the rate of half a le a nute. And we do strctly charge and coand, that the sad publck fast bo reverently and devoutly observed by all our lovng subjects n England, our donon of Wales and town of Berwck upon Tweed, as they tender the favour of Alghty God, and would avod Hs wrath and ndgnaton; and upon pan ot such punshent as we ay Justly nffct upon all such as conten and leglect the perforance of so relgous a duty. And, for the better and ore orderly solenzng the sae, we have gven drectons to the ost reverend the archbshops, and the rght reverend the bshops of England, to copose a for of prayer, sutable to' ths occason, to be used n all churches, and places of publlck worshp, and to take care the sae be te.'y dspersed throughout ther respectve doceses. Gven at our court at St. Jaes, the thrteth day of October, one thousand seven hundred and seventy-sx, n the seventeenth year of our regn. As t turned out the Dvne Majesty to who the Hanoveran kng wshed to appeal for ad evdently decded not to take sdes wth that ruler aganst hs rebellous subjects, and for that reason, t would appear tha there was at least one Frday, the KJth, whch was a lucky day for Aerca, even though It ay have been unlucky for England. More recently than ths exaple of Frday the 13th, beng lucky rather than unlucky for the Aercan people Is the fact that the an chosen to lead our troops In the World war, Gen. John J. Pershng, was born on Frday, the 13th, and one of the greatest vctores of hs en was that at St MJhlel whch was won on Frday the 13th. In fact, there are any people who not only scorn tps superstton but never pass up a chance, as the avators pctured above dd, to defy ths and other jnxes. There was once a faous Thrteen club, whch used to sash a rror before t sat down under ubrellas, thrteen at a table, on the occason of ts onthly dnners on the thrteenth, and there I* no record that bad luck traled any of Its ebers and got the n bad. Several years ago three Chcago C"Uples were arred on Frday, the 13th, at the 13th hoar n cell No 13 of the old convct shp "Success," whcb was then on exhbton n the Chcago rver. The belef that ths nuber Is a hoodoo sees to be world-wde. In France, especally n Par?,' no house bears that nuber. The Ou' look. /*&***<*>«*//**to partes when It s dscovered that there are lkely to be only thrteen guests present, England has left thrteen off ts lcense plates for autoobles and the Italans never ase the nuber In lotteres. The Turks dslke the nuber so uch that they have dropped t fro ther vocabulares. Negroes n every land fear the nuber and t s also taboo aong the Indans of Mexco and Central Aerca. And Aercans are Just as supersttous about t as any other people. Only recently a great ralroad syste announced tat II had pad deference to the superstton by elnatng the nuber thrteen fro ts passenger trans. It was stated at the te that any people refused to rde on those trans f they knew the nuber because they feared bad luck would befall the.
