1 The Dove Tale United Methodist Church of Peace Richfield, Minnesota Volume Eleven March 2018 Issue 2 The Portland Avenue UMC Sanctuary Choir and the Chancel Choir of Church of Peace will present the cantata, Praise the God of Resurrection at The Port (Portland Avenue UMC). This is a beautiful cantata with works by four of today s best church music arrangers and composers: Mark Hayes, Joseph Martin, Lloyd Larson and Ruth Elaine Schram. The cantata is about Jesus life and the events of Holy Week and Easter. It has lovely melodies interspersed throughout, with shifting moods and messages. We will be accompanied by a small orchestra, led by our wonderful pianist Dale Miller. Linda Dicks and Miriam Newton will be the readers. The cantata will be co-directed by Chris Jackson of Church of Peace and Peggy Larson of The Port. Please come to the performance of this fine work, enthusiastically sung by the two choirs of Church of Peace and The Port. We so enjoy collaborating and bringing together our joy of making music into one event. Please support us and bring your friends! Coffee and bars will be served after the cantata. 2 2 Pastor s Column At a recent monthly gathering of my pastor s covenant group, one member shared a question he had recently posed to one on his congregants. Are you doing enough for God by attending church only on Sundays? What he was actually wondering was, Is Sunday worship all there is to your faith? Another way of saying it is, Would God even recognize you outside of church or does he intimately know you by your work and toil in his fields? Please remember what Jesus said to his disciples: The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. (Luke 10:2) The Lord of the harvest calls each of us by name to go into his fields our neighborhoods, our families and even our places of work always prepared to share His love with others whenever the opportunity arises. The season of Lent is our time of preparation of preparing ones heart, mind, body and soul for celebrating Jesus resurrection on Easter morning. I can think of no more joyful way to rejoice in our Lord s rising from the tomb than being able to share His victory over sin and death with someone who needs to hear the Gospel message. So my friends, let us turn from our shyness and become bold harvesters in the fields of Christ Jesus during Lent and beyond! In Him who loved us first, Pastor Gerry

3 Church Council Updates February 8, 2018 Members Present: Cyndy Spear (Chair) Nancy Best, Peg Bosshardt, Louise Hershey, Wayne Hershey, Carol Rose, Steve Rose, and Pastor Gerry Vuchetich. Our Council meeting opened with prayer by Pastor Gerry. The minutes from the January 11, 2018 Church Council meeting were approved. Finance Committee: Thirty-six pledge cards were returned for 2018, with pledging up 13.7% over that pledged in Staff Parish Relations Committee: The Staff Parish Relations Committee met on February 1 and discussed the revisions to the Church Profile. Trustees: Steve Rose reported that snow plowing is going well this season. On February 26 trustees meet with ESCOM (heating/cooling maintenance) and the roofing company concerning the new airconditioning/heating unit for the office/newer building area. Edina has street repair scheduled on Parnell Ave. where the church parsonage is located. The church will include replacing water and sewer lines when this repair is done in In the church s lower level a door will be cut in half, forming a Dutch door, as needed for the Zoe Childcare. Wayne Hershey made a special cleaning effort in the women s upstairs restroom, refurbishing toilets and replacing seats in both men s and women s. Wayne is also building a new bulletin board for the Commons area. The Church Mutual Insurance policy renews on May 1. Steve Rose is doing a rate comparison with United Methodist Insurance. The Zoe Childcare is working on an evacuation plan and external housing in case of emergency need. A decision was made to hold the 2018 church garage sale May 3-5. Missions Committee: Peg Bosshardt reported on state funding for low income housing and Beacon Interfaith Housing. The VEAP Pack delivered 20 grocery bags in January and have 20 bags yet to deliver from church as they are needed. Our project will share beans and corn to VEAP s food shelf also, from our stockpiles. Fund is good. Regarding the personal hygiene kits for VEAP, 300 were packed on January 21. Consideration is being given to making additions such as shampoo and deodorant to the list of items we include in each kit. Our VEAP buyers will investigate pricing. The GNU Chorus donated $550 to the VEAP Project at Church of Peace. For the Spring Break period at Sheridan Hills Elementary we will provide 30 bags of groceries. Memorials Committee: The fund continues with $ United Methodist Women: The Lydia Circle ladies cleaned and organized the kitchen on January 31. With Rose Brier leading, a sloppy joe supper on Ash Wednesday was organized. Jeanette George is leading plans for the circle s VEAP birthday bag packing event on March 10. Worship Committee: Nancy Best and Pastor Gerry shared the Lenten and Easter season schedule of events. Rose Brier has volunteered to do an Easter Sunday breakfast, April 1. Pastor s Report: Neighborhood Watch met at Church of Peace with the fire chief present. The Fire Department will re-key the Knox Box outside of the front door. Statistical reports for the UMC conference were filed on January. Other Business: Cyndy Spear continues her work towards ministry. There will be a Memorial Day event honoring Charlie Turner, to be held at the Honoring All Veterans Memorial, Portland Ave. and 64th St. The meeting closed with prayer by Pastor Gerry. Next meeting: March 7:00 p.m. Love Offering May 2018 Annual Conference Bishop Ough has announced the three projects that the Love Offering for Missions to be taken by the 2018 Annual Conference will support: Puerto Rico Hurricane Recovery Trips (65%) Volunteers in Mission trips from the Minnesota Annual Conference to Puerto Rico. Funds will mainly purchase construction supplies, hygiene kit and cleaning bucket supplies. Park Avenue UMC Children s Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program (20 %). This program is a 6-week summer day camp experience for children. NUMAS Haus (15%) in New Ulm and Brown County Minnesota provides emergency shelter and support services to homeless single women and their children. 3

This also enables the financial giving to be credited to Church of Peace as a Conference Advance. Thank you! Change in Giving Statement Printing Schedule The Financial Office at Church of Peace will henceforth be issuing Giving Statements for the Third and Fourth Quarters of the year only. However, if you find that you do need Giving Statements for either of the earlier quarters in the year, please call the church office and request that which you need. A statement can be printed individually as a need arises. Thank you! For 2018 Daylight Savings Time March 11 is the date! Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative has supported the building of the 66 West apartment building in Edina with the help of the state of Minnesota s funding for affordable housing. In the last six years the Minnesota legislature has funded 85 affordable housing projects throughout Minnesota, however affordable homes are still in short supply. 100,000 households in the metro area pay more than half of their income toward a home. Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative joins with advocates from across the state in supporting the legislative proposal that designates $140 Mission Support Opportunity million to preserve and build affordable homes through the Homes for All campaign.
