4 Owen, above, who died in Greensboro I on Saturday, May 3, at the age' of 98 years, founded or was the I first pastor of the Memorial, Baptist Church in Maysville, the Cherry P o i n t Baptist Church in Havelock, the New-1 port Baptist Church in Newport, the Battleground Baptist f Church near New Bern, the Seal e v e 1 Baptist Church in Smyrna and was an interim pastor of the Havelock Baptist Church. Funeral services were held in Greensboro and burial services were held in the Mars Hill Cemetery. He had taught school and preached for almost ' 80 years. 6 JESSE ROLAND OWEN DIES IN GREENSBORO Jesse Roland Owen, 97, of Greensboro died May 3 in Moses Cone Hospital. He was a native of Lake Toxaway and had lived in Greensboro for two years. A retired Baptist minister, he is a graduate of Judson College, the Fairview Institute near Asheville, Carson Newman College in Johnson City, Tenn., Richmond College of Virginia at Charlottesville, Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex. He served as a pastor in four churches in North Carolina and one in Virginia. He served on the board of trustees of Mars Hill College for 30 years and was past president of the North Carolina Baptist Ministerial Association. Since he retired he founded six churches in the state. Funeral was held May 5 at Lawndale Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Burial was at Mars Hill. Survivors are widow, Mrs. Nell Bishop Owen; sons, Francis M. Owen of Asheville, Maj. Jesse R. Owen, Jr. of the Air Force, daughters, Mrs. C. G. Alspaugh, Jr. of Greensboro and Mrs. Forney Hoke, Jr. of Huntsville, Ala. The family requests that contributions be made to the Jesse Roland Owen Ministerial Fund at Mars Hill College now being established. He was pastor there for 17 years. 8 MARS HILL COLLEGE QUARTERLY, Long-Time Trustee, Rev. Owen, Dies Sept. 1969, Vol. 66, no. 1 I (378/M35H) served churches in Maysville, Havelock, Cherryville, Newport, New Bern and Smyrna. Funeral services for Rev. Jesse Roland Owen, 97, beloved former pastor of the Mars Hill Baptist Church who served on the college board of trustees for 30 rears, were held at the church on May 6. Dr. Hon Blackwell, president emeritus of th; college, and Prof. John A. McLeod, retired former head of the English Department, assisted the pastor of the church, Rev. Richard Price, in the services. Burial was in the Mars Hill Cemetery. Mr. Owen died on J\1ay 3 in Greensboro, where he had lived for two years. Prior to that he had taught school and preached for nearly 80 years. In addition to the 17-year pastorate at Mars Hill he also served churches at Amherst, Va., Brevard, Canton and Asheville. In "retirernent " he had helped found or During his active ministry he served as president of the North Carolina Baptist Ministerial Association and on the Home Mission Board. Survivors included a son and a daughter who attended the college: Francis McHugh Owen '40 of Asheville and Mrs. Forney M. Hoke, Jr. (Ann Lynn) '54 of Huntsville, Ala. In lieu of flowers they suggested a contribution to a memorial loan fund being established at Mars Hill College in memory of Mr. Owen. It was renamed "Owen Building" and is currently used by the drama division as a theater. A student coffeehouse occupies quarters in the basement. Miss Bowden, Retired Art Teach er, Dies Miss Beulah Bowden, 95, retired art teacher who served at the college during the sessions and from 1912 until her retirement in 1950, died Apr. 28 in Tampa, Fla., where she had lived for several years with a sister, l\irs. H. G. Newcomb, Sr. Services and burial were in Charlotte, where two nieces live. heading the art department. A few months after her death several bonds which l\1iss Bowden had stored in the college vault and, apparently, had forgotten were discovered by the business manager. Worth several thousand dollars, they were cashed and used to carrv out the terms of Miss Bowden's wil( and settle her estate. Thus, despite the fact that her lifetime earnings were meager, l\1iss Bowden was able to bequeath $1,000 to the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, provide for her funeral expenses and leave approximately $7,000 to the college.
