J. 'Jr., Dr. J. J. rga nized as a church in The committee membership for the North Laurinburg church, dedicated on September 22, 1957, included Veran Quattlebaum, J. W. Hollis, J. H. Bone and W. E. Matthews. On May 7, 1967, the Stewartsville Baptist Church was organized after developing from a mission which began on March 2, Leaders in this endeavor were Mrs. Ed. D. (Gladys) Creech, J. W. Hollis, J. D. Bullard, Jr., M. B. Massengill, Mrs. W. B. Meares, Thurman Willis and Paul Williams. It would be remiss of any historian to neglect mentioning the tremendous contribution Mrs. Gardner made to this church. Members considered the Gardners the "ideal couple" for service in a church pastorate. A former missionary, she was particularly effective in the work of missions, but her talents were constantly at work in several areas because of her deep sense of faith and devotion. She was a noble, charming, and effective Christian. During the decade of the fifties, and before, church members had their sights set on physical expansion. But under the leadership of Dr. Gardner the church moved ahead so vigorously that definite plans were drawn to add a building on property located immediately east of the church. J. W. Hollis was named chairman of the building committee. Other members were D. J. Sinclair, Jr., W. D. Lytch, Thurman Willis, and J. D. Bullard, Jr. A 26-member planning committee was also formed to assist the smaller committee in decision making and in helping to coordinate plans. The church borrowed $150,000 and got the project under way in On Sunday, December 3, 1961, the service of dedication was conducted, the building was occupied. Richard E. Price, a Mississippi native, served the church faithfully and ably from 1960 until Speaking of eras, his arrival coincided with another "era" in Laurinburg. St. Andrews Presbyterian College opened its doors in the fall of Although this historic event had a specific local impact, the cultural or social revolution of the sixties was ushered in about the same time. An active, young and intelligent pastor, Mr. Price expressed much interest in the outside community where he was especially concerned with social ills. He brought a new approach to ministering and was particularly effective among young people and students. During his pastorate the church reached its highest membership, in excess of 900. Mr. Price resigned to accept a call to the Mars Hill Baptist Church in ]968. and
