In addition, Sarah was to have a bureau, a bedstead & bedding, a glass pitcher, two small tumblers, and a Looking Glass. Nothing further known. F Nancy Chamberlin, b. About 1808 (?), probably Washington Co., PA. Married Samuel Wilson, 1 Mar 1837, Columbiana Co., OH. Called Nancy Wilson in her father s will of 1839, and bequeathed $1.00. Nothing further known. BIOGRAPHICAL Stout Chamberlin was named in his father's will of He does not appear in the 1790 census (nor does his brother Freegift). Based on the meager information available it is surmised that Stout was probably a little older than the average age of men that married in that day, because of his military service and living on the edge of the frontier. This would explain his not being listed in the 1790 census. In 1800, Stout Chamberlain was living in Robinson, Washington Co., PA, heading a family of (3 males under the age of 10 years, 2 males between the ages of 10 and 16 years, 1 male between the ages of 16 and 26 years, 1 male between the ages of 26 and 45 years, 2 females under the age of 10 years, 1 female between the ages of 16 and 26 years). Living nearby were his mother the Widow Chamberlain, of the same township, and his brother Free Chamberlain in Smiths township adjoining Robinson. In 1810, Stout Chamberlain was living in Robinson, Washington Co., PA, heading a family of (3 males under the age of 10 years, 5 males between the ages of 16 and 26 years, 1 male aged 45 years and upwards, 2 females under the age of 10 years, 1 female between the ages of 10 and 16 years, 1 female between the ages of 26 and 45 years). Fourth male age group uncertain. In 1820, Stout Chamberlin was living in Madison Twp, Columbiana Co., OH, heading a family of (3 males under the age of 10 years, 1 male between the ages of 10 and 16 years, 1 male between the ages of 16 and 18 years, 2 males between the ages of 18 and 26 years, 1 male aged 45 years and upwards, 2 females under the age of 10 years, 1 female between the ages of 26 and 45 years). Three persons engaged in Agriculture. March 13, 2003 Page 2 of 5

3 In 1830, Stout Chamberlain was again living in Madison Twp, Columbiana Co., OH, heading a family of (2 males between the ages of 10 and 15 years, 1 male between the ages of 15 and 20 years, 1 male between the ages of 70 and 80 years, 1 female between the ages of 5 and 10 years, 1 female between the ages of 15 and 20 years, 1 female between the ages of 40 and 50 years). Stout is not found in the 1840 census, which indicates he died sometime between Jan 1839, and the time of the 1840 census. An accurate record of his children has been very difficult to construct. Information given in the death records of his sons Elijah, Isaac, and George have established their birth dates. The marriage date of his daughter Nancy yields a resonably good estimate for her date of birth. For all of the other children, it is a big guessing game. If the age groups for the 1800 census are accurate, he had 3 sons aged under 10 years of age, 2 sons aged years, one son aged over 16 years, and two daughters under the age of 10 years. In 1810, there were 3 sons under the age of 10 years, five sons aged years, 2 daughters under the age of 10 years, and one daughter aged years, for a total of 12 children. This number is in agreement with the number of children named in his will. His sons William, James, Benjamin, and David have not been found in the Columbiana county records examined thus far, indicating they lived in another locality. In his pension application in 1832 (following), Stout states that he moved to Columbiana county about 15 years ago), which yields a date of 1817, which is close to the date he purchased land in Madison township. On 19 Oct 1832, Stout Chamberlain, of Columbia, Ohio, applied for a pension at the Ohio Pittsburgh agency, based on his military service and deposed the following: Residing in Columbiana County, Ohio; aged 75 years on the first of May next, born 1 May 1758, NJ. Question: Where were you born: Somewhere in New Jersey on the first of May I lived in the Washington County, PA, at the time of enlistment. Afterwards I lived there also until about 15 years ago when I moved to Columbiana County, Ohio. Signed with a mark. A note in the these records indicate information from this file was sent to F.C. Cochran on 29 Jan His pension was granted on 3 Jan 1833, when he was still living in Columbiana Co., Ohio, aged about 77 years. He served in the militia, having enlisted from Washington Co., PA, in 1777; Rangers, Washington Co., PA, ; Private, Washington County Militia; Private, Continental Line, Washington County; Associators & Militia, Washington County; Captain Peter Kidd's Militia Roll, fifth class; also payroll of party of Washington County Militia in actual service on the Washington Country frontier to repel hostile indians; commencing 27 June and ending 30 June 1791, inc. Stout Chamberlin, private, 4 days pay, $3.40. Stout s brother Freegift also applied for a pension which was granted. In his application of 29 Oct 1832, Freegift stated he was born 20 Oct 1758, and aged 74 years; whereas Stout in his application of 19 Oct 1832, stated he was born on 1 May 1758, and was 75 years old on 1st of May next. Both of these dates can t be correct, so who's right? Since it is consistent that Stout appears to be the elder brother, we will assume his birth year to have been probably 1757, rather than (Perhaps his age given with reference to 1st of May next should have been 1st of May last. March 13, 2003 Page 3 of 5

4 Several acts of Congress in the early 1800s provided for the sale of the lands of the United States in the Territory Northeast of the Ohio River, and above the mouth of the Kentucky River. The first survey was done in 1802 with the lands being laid out into two-mile squares. However, a second survey was done in 1813, and the lands subdivided by the act of 1802, were now to be laid out in the present one-mile squares each containing 640 acres (A Listing of Entrymen on Lands in Columbiana County, Ohio). Stout Chamberlin first purchased the Southwest Quarter Section of this land located in Section 20, Township 10, Range 2 (Madison Township), consisting of acres on 6 Dec 1814, at Steubenville, Ohio,. On 2 Dec 1823, he purchased a tract of acres located in the east half of the Northeast Quarter of Section 15, Township 10, Range 2, and consisting of acres. Previously, on 1 Apr 1822, his son Isaac purchased a tract of acres in the very same section. Thus, between the two of them, they owned the entire Northeast Quarter of Section 15 (township & range aforesaid) of 160 acres of land. A Stout Chamberlain married Ellen Norfork (or Norfolk), 17 Jan 1835, Columbiana Co., OH, which could be this man, though it seems far more logical and likely that it was a grandson or nephew. Stout Chamberlin made his will on 15 Jan 1839, which reads (as transcribed by Sue Hey): In the name of God Amane [sic], I Stout Chamberlin being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory and knowing the inventory of all Human affairs & after comending my Soul to god and my body to the grave do make this my last will & Testament in maner as follows: First, I do constitute and apoint my beloved Son George Chamberlin my Lawfull Executor of this my will hereby revoaking all other and former wills by me made or inteded to be made and I do allow him to dispose of my farming utentils & hous hold & kitchen furniture in the maner he may Judge best and aply the proceeds of the same to repairing the fences and other nessecary repaing on the Land I sold to him And l do further allow my said Executor to pay to daughter Jane Stewart, one dollar, & to my son William Chamberlin, one dollar, & to my son Eliza (Elija) Chamberlin, one dollar, & to my daughter Nancy Wilson, one dollar and to my daughter Diana Smith, one dollar, & to my son David Chamberlin, one dollar, & to my son John Chamberlin, one dollar, and to my son Benjamin Chamberlin one dollar. And I do further allow my son George Chamberlin, My son James Chamberlin, & my son Isaac Chamberlin, & my daughter Sarah Chamberlin, all and each of them to have an equal part or Share of my Money that may remain out of my land after all my Mantainance During Sickness & health and my funeral Expenses & Doctors bill shall be paid. And I do further Leave to my daughter Sara one Beauro one bedsted bed & beding one glass pitcher two small tumblers and one Looking Glass. In testamoney where I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of January A.D. 1839, signed in presents of us Wm Crawford his Wm Crawford. Stout [X] Chamberlin (SEAL) mark Witnesses: Jacob Chamberlin Jacob Chamberlin No land transactions have been found in the Columbiana County Deeds indicating that Stout ever disposed of any of this property, and he makes no mention of any real estate in his will.
