2 Fall Educational Offerings Adult Education - 6 week series beginning 9/16 Journey of Faith Church Traditions of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community in Clark County has dramatically increased their involvement in WHO, and have been game-changers in terms of volunteer commitment, leadership, and supplies. Please join us to learn more about Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traditions, its history, and their principles in six Adult Education presentations beginning on September 16 th. The presentations will cover the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a short overview of its history and growth. Those subjects will lead to a more detailed discussion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints religious beliefs and principles, including those that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members have in common with other Christian churches and those that may set them apart. Finally, we will consider how those beliefs and principles impact the lives and lifestyles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members. Curt and Janet Stone will be our guides during these discussions, and have been residents of Vancouver since 2009, when Curt retired from a 33-year career in the U.S. diplomatic service. During that time, Curt worked for the US Department of State, serving in U.S. Embassies and Missions in Asia, Europe, and Canada. During the years abroad, Janet worked as a teacher (New Delhi International School) and in the administrative and consular sections of the Embassies in Berlin and Ottowa. Curt and Janet both joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as college students at Washington State University, and have served in various capacities as lay church leaders and teachers in every city where they have lived, including as Public Affairs Directors for the Vancouver Stake of the LDS Church ( ). They married in 1975 and have four children and eleven grandchildren. Whether you are new to St. Andrew, or a longtime member, we invite you to join in our Journey of Faith process, where you can continue to experience God's love and grow in your faith. The process begins with Come and See, which begins on Sept. 16 and continues for six weeks. The Come and See group meets on Sunday mornings during the education hour, from 9:45 until 10:45 in the conference room that is just off the church office area. This is a time to ask questions about what we believe, how we live out our faith, or what worship is all about. You will also have a chance to meet with others, both new to the church and long time members and share your joys and concerns if you so desire. If you decide to continue in the process at the end of the six weeks, you can join the Come and Grow part of Journey of Faith. This group meets on alternate Tuesday (or Thursday) evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 beginning the week of November 3, until Lent, when the group meets weekly. These gatherings will include an opportunity to hear and discuss the Bible readings for each week and to share your own experiences and stories of faith. We will also explore Christian beliefs and faith practices. People new to the faith or to St. Andrew are paired with a faith partner and so it is a wonderful opportunity to grow in relationship with others and with God. The goal is to lead you into a deeper journey of faith with Jesus Christ. The final part of the process is Come and Serve, which occurs during the fifty days after Easter. This is a time to explore how to live out your calling to serve others and God, including exploring your gifts, interests and passions to find meaningful ways to use these gifts. Please feel free to contact lay leaders Corinne Vaughn, Diane Smith, or Pastor Jim. You can also contact the church office, either by phone or . 2 St. Andrew Lutheran Church Newsletter
3 Inside These Walls Godly Play training was another transformational experience for our future Storytellers and Doorkeepers. We were blessed with a diversity of denominations who were interested in this ministry for their congregations. A total of 25 people attended from Lutheran, United Methodist, Presbyterian, and Quaker backgrounds. The Holy Spirit moved through our gathering in a way that inspired all of us to dwell in the wonderment and mystery of our Creator. Sara Howe THANK YOU! Fred Meyer donates a percentage of proceeds to local non-profits based on where their customers tell them to direct the money. If you choose St. Andrew as your nonprofit whenever you use your Rewards Card you ll be helping St. Andrew earn a donation from Fred Meyer. This is an additional benefit and does not take away from your household reward. This quarter our supporters, 29 households, who shopped at Fred Meyer between April and June contributed $ to our church! If you would like to support St. Andrew in this way information about how you can link your Rewards Card is available on the Information Center. Outside These Walls St. Andrew was invited to participate in a national summer program sponsored by the United Method Church. The Orchards and Mill Plain churches were the host sites in the Vancouver area. We were happy to volunteer at the Orchards location since their members have always been so supportive of WHO. The main goal of this program is to improve literacy and social-emotional health for elementary students. The students come from a variety of schools, public and private. They are identified by school staff members and need parental permission and support to attend. Parents provide transportation and also attend activities throughout the session. College interns provide the leadership for a variety of activities including arts & crafts, outdoor play, meals, etc. The focus each morning is on the 30 minute reading practice. Students read with the volunteers, discuss their stories, ask questions, predict endings, and relate these stories to their lives. The 6-8 week program needed volunteers from 9:30am-12:00pm Monday-Thursdays. St. Andrew partnered with a local LDS church to provide 12 volunteers each day July 29-August 2. We also provided two evening meals for all the local interns. Everyone seemed to be very happy to participate. The experience was a positive one. Sixty students from the Vancouver area were signed up for the Orchards site with an average of attending each day. Kathy Hauge Thank You! On behalf of the patients at Doernbecher's, thank you all so much for your generosity. On Wednesday I will be delivering $ worth of gift cards to the hospital. It's nice to know there will be such a varied assortment of cards for the patients to choose from. Thank you all for the love and support you continue to shower on Joe and me. Knowing Will is still in your thoughts and hearts is such a source of strength for us. We are so blessed to be part of the St. Andrew family. Will Power!!! Karen Krajewski School Supplies Drive Recap: Along with the donations collected at VBS, the Social Concerns School Supply Drive amassed a total of 224 packages of pens, pencils erasers, etc. and 47 backpacks. This year St. Andrew gave Orchards Elementary School over $1000 worth of school supplies. Thank you for your generosity. September
4 Letter from Pastor Jim To those whom God loves, I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing the world. You re doing things you ve never done before, and more importantly, you re doing something. So that s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself Neil Gaiman The above saying was passed out at the Godly Play training last week. It is inspiring to me for a couple of reasons. First, it s like a turtle who makes no forward practice unless it sticks its neck out. It s about risk taking. It s taking chances. It s a yearning to do something. It takes courage. It reminds me of the letter Martin Luther wrote to his colleague and friend Philip Melanchthon saying, Sin Boldly. Luther continues since all we do is colored by sin, Act in Christ more boldly because he is victorious over sin, death and the world! In short Luther says that if things work well give thanks to God for the Spirit s insight and guidance. Furthermore, if it is a flop, give thanks to this same God for grace and forgiveness. Next it speaks about the freedom of the Christian to act. In John 14:12 Jesus says, Very truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I think Jesus knew that the future would be different that would take different ways to share the message of the Gospel. Christ implores us to act in new ways to spread his message of the kingdom/dream of God. As a result I want to encourage you all to participate in some new programs/activities. Messy Church meets once a month and begins on September 9 from 4-6 pm. Please check it out. Mini retreats are planned for the year on various spiritual practices. The next one is September 9 th on Spiritual Transformation in Motion. Postcard invites are available at the Welcome Center. Because the 2 year search for an Associate Pastor has not been successful, the council decided to hire a new fulltime Director for Children, Youth and Family Ministry. A special congregational meeting is on September 30 will be to approve the new Welcome Statement, discontinue the current the Call Team elected to find an Associate Pastor, and elect a new Call Team for the purpose of seeking full-time pastor who will serve as the successor to Pastor Stender upon his retirement. St. Andrew is standing, but not standing still. These programs and actions are both an expression of our faith in Jesus Christ and invitations for others to join in this same journey. Celebrating Pastor Jim and his 20 Years of service at St. Andrew and recognizing his 40 th Ordination. 4 St. Andrew Lutheran Church Newsletter
5 by JoAnn Rash Youth & Family How can you serve? That is the theme of the Ministry Fair this year. If you haven t checked out the Ministry fair booklet (Thank you, Amy!) I encourage you to do so. It is chock full of great opportunities to serve at St. Andrew. The Youth Ed Team and the Youth and Family Team have many opportunities awaiting those eager to serve. We are looking for new team members, Godly Play Storytellers and Doorkeepers, and event leaders. Your commitment level can range from a year or more to as little as one day. Your rewards for serving are limitless. The gifts that you share will pale in comparison to the gifts that you will receive. Working with those in the first third of life is life changing. I also encourage you to explore the why of service. The Ministry Fair Booklet includes many stories of why people serve. For those serving on ministry teams, a values checklist is a great way to learn why team members serve. A value is a belief about the way things should be done or about the results we desire. Values are important to us and help us to make decisions. Taking a few minutes to discover what your Christian values are as a servant can help you clarify what it is that is driving your actions. Do you value cooperation? Are honesty and integrity at the top of your list? Is having fun a priority? Knowing this will guide your actions as a team, help you meet the needs of those who serve alongside you, and answer the why of service. If you would like a copy of a values checklist to use with your ministry team or would like to serve in youth ministry, please youthfamily@salcvan.org. I look forward to serving with you. by Beth Femling St. Andrew Preschool & Kindergarten Positive Solutions for Families Class Offered Learn how to promote children s social and emotional skills, and use positive approaches to help children learn appropriate behavior.
