Their work is done, and the setting sun has sealed their life s long quest. They have left this earthly garden for a home beyond the sea. Though they are gone, they still live on, in our garden of memory. ****************************************** These are referred to a philosophical degrees, a name which may be puzzling to many even after they take the degrees. This fall, the offices of the New Haven Chapter of Rose Croix will portray the Eighteenth Degree, Knight of Rose Croix, for your edification. GREETINGS SUBLIME PRINCES Welcome to the New Haven Chapter of Rose Croix, which is responsible for two Scottish Rite Degrees (the 17 and 18 ). In the Eighteen Degree, we are taught that the worship of a supreme being does not require a material structure, only an open mind. After you experience the degree, let s discuss your interpretation of why it is considered philosophical. From here you will progress to the Consistory, which will portray those degrees necessary for the continuation of your journey to the Thirty Second Degree, Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret. My officers and I wish you much success in your quest for further light in Masonry. Fraternally Paul L. Chello, 33 o Most Wise Master 25

Ek, 32 o ELM CITY PRINCES OF JERUSALEM Chartered at New Haven August 18, 1875 The hundreds of beautiful elm trees which, a hundred years ago, shaded the Green and lined Hillhouse Avenue, as well as other streets, gave New Haven the well deserved name of "Elm City." Because of blight to the trees and redevelopment the title is less applicable today. It was at New Haven that Masonry was first introduced into the state with organization of the present Hiram Lodge No. 1 in The Council of Princes of Jerusalem, 15-16, inclusive, teaches lessons using settings based on the ancient captivity of the Hebrews and the building of the second Temple. 24 FROM THE THRICE POTENT MASTER Greetings Brethren, I welcome you all to our Fall Reunion. We have a full schedule and will be portraying the 7 th and 8 th degrees as well as the 4 th and 14 th, in the fall class, with the 9 th and 10 th to be portrayed in the spring. I hope you will be able to join us to celebrate and renew the lessons of the Lodge of Perfection. Let us, as Elect Masons true, Virtue s eternal league renew, While celebrating friendship s feast, Love be our ever welcome guest. I hope that even if you are not in the cast, you will be able to at least attend the 14 th degree. As one of the more prominent degrees in our rite, it is the time to renew old friendships as well as begin new ones. May all who friendship s feast partake, The good pursue, the bad forsake! And may each rite and sign, A happy, lasting influence shed: The quadrant crowned, the oil, the bread, The golden ring, the wine! Long as I live this ring I ll wear, Symbol of an alliance dear, To every brother s heart; And bless the sacred tie that binds, In virtue s chain; for virtue joins, What death can never part. The above quotes are taken are taken from Charles McClenachan s monitor and it is well worth a read, as are the monitors by William Cunningham and more recently by Rev. Jan Beaderstadt all for the Northern Jurisdiction. They give insight to our degrees as well as our history and I commend them to your study. And, if able, I would recommend the 14 th degree ring. As one of only two official rings for the Scottish Rite (the other being the 33 o ring), the symbolism contained therein should be a mark of our bond as Scottish Rite Masons. I look forward to greeting you all in September. Fraternally, Martin Ede, 33 o Thrice Potent Master 9

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPEMENT Dear Brethren, The past year has been absolutely wonderful for the development of our valley's membership. We've had the largest classes in many years, a concerted effort to contact brothers in due arrears before they dropped NPD, several great events and brothers coming together to further their Masonic education in our study groups. Although the numbers aren't final yet this year, it is expected that we will have had our first positive membership growth in decades. I'd like to thank you all for your past hard work, however a Mason's a work is never done and neither is the work of your Membership Development Team. We continue to fulfill Sovereign Grand Commander McNaughton goal that "Each Valley must emphasize Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment in all its programs and degrees." The Membership Development Team and the entire valley are dedicated to making each of our events and degrees inspirational, convenient, and enjoyable. If you haven t been to our reunions recently, why don t you come down and see how we re turning these concepts into a reality! The Scottish Rite degrees convey very powerful and diverse life lessons that benefit all present no matter how many times one observes a particular degree. The degree experience is made even more meaningful when you participate as a cast member or as a member of the stage crew. A little-known benefit of being an active participant in the degree work both on stage and behind the curtain is found in the rehearsal evenings where you get to know more of the brethren in a more relaxed and enjoyable setting. If you re not already involved in our degree work and would like to be, we can certainly use your help and find something you ll enjoy doing. The Valley of New Haven extends an invitation to all Master Masons in good standing to join us. If you know a Master Mason, who is interested in learning more about the Scottish Rite please invite him to our upcoming Masonic Information Night for good food, fellowship, and the foundations of Masonry. Further, if you send his name and address to the Membership Development Committee, we will send him a packet of more information about the Rite and the Scottish Rite for the 21st Century DVD. Please contact me with potential candidates who would like more information at chtirrell@gmail.com The Valley of New Haven holds to the principles of Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment. We have several programs throughout the year that benefit the membership and their families. We encourage involvement in our organization, whether it be in degrees or behind the scenes, as it takes many men to put on a successful reunion and to have a strong fraternity.
