9 FROM THE THRICE POTENT MASTER Greetings Brethren, It is truly an honor to be elected to the position of Thrice Potent Master for the ensuing year. Of all the Scottish Rite degrees, I have always been most impressed with the 14th Degree. Its symbolism is rich and meaningful. Its lessons are numerous and applicable to everyday life. Beyond this, the camaraderie shared amongst the officers of the E. G. Storer Lodge of Perfection portraying this degree has always been remarkable and the time spent together has been genuinely electric. I would like to thank Brother Sid Isenberg for his past year of service as Thrice Potent Master. His efforts have helped to strengthen our already active and vibrant Valley. I greatly look forward to working with the members of our Lodge of Perfection and our Valley in further progressing the fantastic environment we have developed over the past few years. This season we plan on portraying the 4th, old 4th, 6th and 14th degrees in the Lodge of Perfection. In addition to the degrees of the Council and Chapter, we will have our annual Oktoberfest as well as some other great events. I hope to see many new faces and I look forward to meeting once again with old friends. Let us not forget the lessons taught to us in the 14th degree and let us be thankful for this great brotherhood of the virtuous whom death can not separate. Fraternally, Charles Hughes Tirrell Thrice Potent Master INDEX 9

18 MEMBERSHIP The primary focus of the Scottish Rite: Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment. Our valley, along with all other valleys in the jurisdiction, have been asked by Sovereign Grand Commander McNaughton to fulfill this simple goal: "Each Valley must emphasize Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment in all its programs and degrees." This is an easy to understand and targeted goal that we all can make happen. The Membership Development Team and the entire valley are now dedicated to making each of our events and degrees inspirational, convenient, and enjoyable. If you haven t been to our reunions recently, why don t you come down and see how we re turning these concepts into a reality! The Scottish Rite degrees convey very powerful and diverse life lessons that benefit all present no matter how many times one observes a particular degree. The degree experience is made even more meaningful when you participate as a cast member or as a member of the stage crew. A little-known benefit of being an active participant in the degree work both on stage and behind the curtain is found in the rehearsal evenings where you get to know more of the brethren in a more relaxed and enjoyable setting. If you re not already involved in our degree work and would like to be, we can certainly use your help and find something you ll enjoy doing. The Valley of New Haven extends an invitation to all Master Masons in good standing to join us. If you know a Master Mason, who is interested in learning more about the Scottish Rite, please invite him to our upcoming Masonic Information Night for good food, fellowship, and the foundations of Masonry. Furthermore, if you send his name and address to the Membership Development Committee, we can send him a packet of more information about the Rite and the Scottish Rite for the 21st Century DVD. Please contact me with potential candidates who would like more information at chtirrell@gmail.com The Valley of New Haven holds to the core principles of Inspiration, Convenience, and Enjoyment. We have several programs throughout the year that benefit both the membership and their families. We do encourage involvement in our organization whether it be in degrees or behind the scenes as it takes many men to put on a successful reunion and to have a strong fraternity. Because of blight to the trees and redevelopment the title is less applicable today. It was at New Haven that Masonry was first introduced into the state with organization of the present Hiram Lodge # 1 in The Council of Princes of Jerusalem 15-16, inclusive, teach lessons using settings based on the ancient captivity of the Hebrews and the building of the second Temple. 25 GREETINGS SUBLIME PRINCES Welcome to the New Haven Chapter of Rose Croix, which is responsible for two Scottish Rite Degrees (the 17 and 18 ) often referred to as the "philosophical degrees." You might well wonder what is meant by the designation "philosophical degrees." My interpretation (and I emphasize "my") is that the degrees deal with processes of thought and conduct and encourage a system of principles for the conduct of life. This fall, the officers of the New Haven Chapter of Rose Croix will portray the Eighteenth Degree, Knight of Rose Croix, for your edification. After you have experienced the degree, let s discuss whether you agree or disagree with my interpretation of the designation of "philosophical degrees." From here you will progress to the Consistory, which will portray those degrees necessary for the continuation of your journey to the Thirty Second Degree, Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret. My officers and I wish you much success in your quest for further light in Masonry. Fraternally Paul L. Chello Most Wise Master INDEX 25

32 VALLEY HISTORIAN S MESSAGE The first vestige of Scottish Rite activity in New Haven ranged from After the passing of one of the architects of the Valley of New Haven, his dream was brought to fruition. In 1873, our Lodge of Perfection was named in memory of E. G. Storer, whose dream had been fulfilled. Ever since that time, Masons from the greater New Haven area have sought further light in the Valley of New Haven. As you can imagine, updating the history of an organization with such a wonderful heritage is a labor of love. Ever since this mantle had been passed to me I have sought to produce an updated history that will not only be factual but enjoyable, as well. Updating a history is not trying to reinvent the wheel. However, the more one delves into a task such as this, the more pertinent and interesting facts are uncovered. Maybe some of you have some yet undiscovered data that will be great fodder for a project. A history should never be complete, God forbid! There should always be more to do, and it should always be within reach. We are fortunate to be able to claim nearly a score of Most Worshipful Grand Masters of Connecticut whose Scottish Rite membership can be found in the Valley of New Haven since her formation, in 1873, Illustrious Charles A. Buck, Jr. Among them and others whose leadership have brought the Valley of New Haven to have been a Congressman, book and newspaper publishers, doctors, lawyers, and college presidents. As you can see, the range of considerations can be endless. One thing that never quits is our quality of work. In the search for further light, incidents will be brought to your attention you might never have suspected occurred. These will make your Masonic journey even more profound. As your correspondent to Connecticut Freemasons (as well as your Historian), please send me any vignettes, or news of any type beneficial to the Valley of New Haven. A lot of untold stories remain in closed closets. Today s news becomes tomorrows history all, too soon! We welcome the members of our Fall Reunion to partake of all that is offered. You will become aware of some things that you might have been wondering about. We ask you to continue our wonderful heritage and, please, support our charities. Take it all in! Fraternally Ye Olde Historian Mike INDEX 32
