In order to support this expanded ministry, we as a congregation, approved a larger budget for While expenses are in line with that budget and offerings have increased, they have not increased at the rate needed to keep our budget balanced. Through the first half of the year, we have a $42,000 deficit. We have overcome such deficits before and can do so again. This is intended as a reminder to keep our shared commitment in mind as the year progresses. Flower Calendar Floral arrangements for the altar are available for $25/week. The flower chart is located on the wall on the first bulletin board as you walk in the north doors. If you would like to commemorate a special event, please make a note on the line. Payment should be made by placing a check in the offering plate with FLOWERS written in the memo. If you have questions, please contact the church office. New Automatic Giving Forms First Lutheran is changing banks and everyone that has automatic giving will need to see Sandy and pick up new forms to fill out to continue with the automatic giving. If you would like to begin having your offering, Building for the Future, Petersen giving, etc. go through automatic deposit into the First Lutheran account see Sandy to fill out forms.

2 Six Degrees Our Current Sunday Series You ve heard of the game Six Degrees to Kevin Bacon, right? Supposedly, everyone in Hollywood is connected somehow (and in six steps ) to Kevin Bacon. This summer, we re going to play our own version of Six Degrees only we re going to do it using the catechism. We re walking through the six chief parts of Luther s Small Catechism and discovering how each part relates to one another and to our daily walk of faith. Throughout the series there will be lots of opportunities for all ages to dive deeper into the various topics. Be sure to check out Six Degrees Take Home Books At the start of each chief part, a take home book will be available. These books are filled with devotional material and Bible study materials you can use at home each week. PARENTS be sure to check out the activities you can do with your children to learn each chief part in a FUN (& easy!!!) way. Adult Bible Study-9:15 fellowship time, 9:30 class stars Meet in the church basement for a Bible study that follows along each chief part. This study will be led by Pastor Mark and Deacon Simons. Baptism and Remembrance Party August 3 During both services, we ll have the opportunity to participate in a baptismal remembrance service, and during the Education Hour (9:15AM), we ll have a party to celebrate our new life in Christ! ICE CREAM SOCIAL AT TRINITY, PAOLA AUGUST 3 All members of our congregation are invited to enjoy a free Ice Cream Social at Trinity Lutheran Church, Block Road, rural Paola on Sunday, August 3 at 6:00pm. Please bring lawn chairs and come enjoy the delicious food and fun fellowship! For more information please contact Pat Tagler at Up-Coming Community Events Date Event Location August Roots Festival On the Square September 20 Blocktoberfest Trinity Block Lutheran Church Quilts of Appreciation for Miami County Veterans The Miami County Quilters Guild is making quilts of appreciation for Miami County Veterans who have served during wartime. The guild is concentrating on veterans of WWII first, however, if someone served in a later war and has a serious health situation they will be moved up the list. The quilters guild is excited about this project and hope the community will help us show our appreciation for the service and sacrifices these men and women have given for our country. * Submit names of Miami County veterans who served in wartime. * Miami County Quilters Guild P. 3 Braille Bibles On the 3 rd Tuesday of each month, a group of 5 people from First Lutheran and/or Trinity, Block, goes to Bethany Lutheran Church in Overland Park to make Braille Bibles. We leave here at 8:30 and return by 2:30-3:00pm. We are in the process of working up a schedule for September, 2014 August, We need drivers (with at least a 5 passenger vehicle) and workers. This is NOT physical work and is very rewarding to see the finished project. Our work center was recently notified by Lutheran Braille Workers that they have received an order for 700 Bibles in the Amharic language to be sent to Ethiopia. If you can help with this project to bring the Word of God to the visually impaired in Ethiopia, contact Ethel or gr2lweaver@micoks.net. Birth Announcements Shawn & Tresha Miller are the proud parents of a son, Graydon Isaac Miller, born on June 20. The paternal grandparents are Orval & Karen Miller. Graydon has 4 older brothers: Logan, Garrett, Gannon & Gunnar. Jake and Stephanie Connor are the parents of a daughter Jamie Lynn, she was born on Tuesday, July 15. Jamie Lynn s grandparents are Mark & Karen Nelson, great grandparents are Dennis & Jeanette Norton. College Students The church office needs updated information for all of the college students for the year. Please send name, school attending and school address whether it is on or off campus to FLCsecretary@att.net or by calling the church office at by August 30. Lost Serving Spoon A serving spoon has been placed in the office, it is from the Family Ministry picnic on Sunday, June 1 st. If you are missing a serving spoon or picked up one that does not belong to you come see Sandy in the office.
