1 St. John Lutheran Church THE ST. JOHN NEWS June 2014 VBS 2014! Gangway to Galilee! Get the kids of your families ready! Vacation Bible School is coming soon! This year's theme is Gangway to Galilee. Here's what Concordia Publishing House has to say about it's own pinnacle summer achievement: "Gangway! Clear the way! In Gangway to Galilee VBS, your children learn that Jesus gives amazing grace to us all! Clear your schedules to hear five amazing Bible accounts that take place on the Sea of Galilee or its shore. Crowds of thousands followed Jesus as He called His disciples, taught the people about their heavenly Father, and showed that He will keep us safe, save us, and provide for all we need now and eternally. This VBS is an adventure of "Amazing Grace!" Each year, St. John Lutheran Church is pleased to host Vacation Bible School as a great opportunity for the children of our congregation to meet again in the summer months to hear God's Word, learn about the Gospel truths of our Lord Jesus Christ, build relationships with various adult volunteers from our church, and strengthen bonds they have with friends they already know, along with making new friends throughout the week. VBS is a tremendous outreach into our community as well. It is by God's grace that there are many families who scour the community calendars for Vacation Bible Schools to which they can send their children. We are pleased to be among those churches that provide a VBS. What makes our VBS unique? The answer to the above question is the same answer to the question about what makes our Lutheran Church unique. It is the relentless focus on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Christ-centeredness of all we do, say, and teach. When children attend our VBS, they will be presented with Bible stories and lessons that remain faithful to the Scriptures themselves and they will be taught the purest meaning of those stories. What that means is that they will hear about Jesus, first and foremost. They will hear of his great love for us and for all people shown by his own suffering and death upon the cross. And each child will learn that the Lord Jesus Christ continues to reach out to us with his love through the preaching and teaching of his Word and through the gifts of Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Nuts and Bolts Our VBS this year will be June 23-27, from 9am through 11:30am each day. Registration is open and forms can be found in the church office and school office. We will maintain the same schedule as in recent years. Our closing program will be on Friday again this year, at the conclusion of our last day. A system of site rotation will be used to maximize the skills of our volunteers and the attention and interest of our students. Your Involvement As always, Vacation Bible School is made possible by the willingness of many volunteers. You are invited to check the volunteer sign up sheet on the bulletin board across from the Fellowship Hall to determine volunteer opportunities that may interest you. Here are some other ways you can help: Pray! Please pray for our leaders, for all of our volunteers, for all of the students and for their families, in the days prior to VBS and especially in the days and weeks following VBS as all ponder the Word heard, the faith that has been kindled, and the truth of Jesus Christ and him crucified. Donate. We are always in need of donations. The most pertinent items will be made known through supply tabs posted on the VBS bulletin board across from the Fellowship Hall. Please consider helping through the provision of these products. Support. Please do not hesitate to talk to those you know who are helping with our VBS. All who assist with VBS love to hear that others are thinking of them and are truly interested in the work done through this education program. Words of encouragement are always appreciated! If you have any questions about Vacation Bible School or would like to know more, you can me any time at I would love to hear from you, as would any of our volunteers! Thank you for your ongoing faithfulness to St. John and for your support of Vacation Bible School. Peace with God is yours through our Lord Jesus Christ. Pastor Caithamer

Garage Sale Update We raised about $3700 at the garage sale. We had two donations to bring the total to $4500. Then Thriven Financial gave us matching funds to bring the total to $6000. Thank you for your support! Check out the youth bulletin board later this summer for pictures from our servant events. Running of the Rams Our Champaign County Chapter of Thrivent Financial has approved matching $1,500 for this first annual fundraiser for our school. Ronda Craig, Congregational Advocate Thrivent Choice Dollars Program During 2013 St. John Thrivent members designated $1.908 to St. John Lutheran Church and $2,643 to St. John Lutheran School. Thank you for making good use of your funds! This year Thrivent Financial has significantly raised the amount that each member has for this program. When you make your minimum of an annual call or online contact to Thrivent Financial regarding Thrivent Choice, remember that you can split your designation to many worthy organizations. St. Jude and the Wounded Warrior charities are the two most frequently chosen. Instruction cards for the Thrivent Choice program are on the narthex table. Mission Statement United in faith, we serve the Kingdom of God by building lives that are rooted in the Word, centered on Christ, and motivated by Grace; to reflect Christ s love and share His Gospel with all.

Perhaps go out to dinner with your family or treat yourself to an afternoon of relaxation at a spa? Not if you are Maura. Maura hosted a school library fundraising evening at her home for her family and friends. There were gift baskets to bid on, a drawing and great snack food. Maura and her husband Gary did this in loving memory of Gary's father, Thomas Wayne. He is second grade student, Maddy s "Papa - Great". $ was raised. Thank you to this generous group of St. John Lutheran School Library supporters! And yes, I got to share in the fun also. Several books donations were made recently to our library. Thank you Seten Family, Mrs. Milas, Mr. Remmert and Taylor. Taylor is a St. John graduate. Mrs. Mihm's second grade class was treated again this year to what we call Special Guest Readers. These special people volunteered to visit the library during the class' library time and read to them. Thank you Mrs. Walker, Principal Burgener, Mrs. Haase and Mrs. Schmidt. We loved the books that you shared with us! Have a safe, wonderful summer and keep reading! Ronda, librarian
