2 CONFERENCE OVERVIEW Philippi, West Virginia will be the site for Targeting Hope, the fifth Christian Community Development Conference in West Virginia. The event, which focuses on community development in rural areas and small cities, will begin September 21 and 22, Anyone involved or interested in community development efforts in these environments will benefit from the wealth of information to be provided during the conference. Sponsors of the conference include World Vision, Appalachian Community CARE and Youth Works. The Christian Community Development Association based in Chicago, Illinois and Multi- Cultural Church Relations of the Willow Creek Association in Barrington, Illinois are both instrumental in ensuring the success of Targeting Hope. The mission of the conference is to provide a learning event for churches, organizations and individuals involved with or interested in Christian community development; to examine the role of the church and personal faith in the community development process; to celebrate successes and share best practices of Christian community development; and to benefit from discussions with civic leaders, foundations, and government leaders. This year, the conference will focus on non-profit leadership and youth empowerment for both youth workers and students. This conference is an ideal place to come if you work for or volunteer with a non-profit organization and are attempting to meet the needs of people by empowering them and their communities to greater levels of success. This conference will also benefit pastors, community and church leaders and youth leaders who are seeking ideas and tools that can help locate resources and maximize the opportunities of the people being served. In addition, the conference will connect people and programs that are changing the root causes of problems that continue to keep people and communities from reaching their highest potential. In announcing this event, conference chair, Ruston Seaman, World Vision Appalachia executive director stated, Once again, we will gather as community developers to learn better ways to support leaders in rural communities and small cities as they attempt to make a long-term positive difference. This conference will include workshops by some of our nation s most committed leaders, each of whom has been laboring to promote community development, in both the secular and faith-based arenas. We are excited to bring an event of such value to our area. This is a great opportunity to join with leaders locally and nationally to plan and pray together, sharing the stories and best practices learned from working in under-resourced communities. Dr. John Perkins will be with us again this year, presenting his daily Bible study and sharing decades of Christian community development wisdom.
