2 Grand Knight Message (continued) event a wonderful experience for all the attendees. Many thanks to all of you! The Pancake breakfast meeting on February 9 was a huge success. Head Chef Bob DePaola and his helpers prepared a wonderful breakfast, and everyone had more than enough food. Our guest speakers were Marty and Graciela Marinoff, who are self-proclaimed Pro-Life Warriors. They discussed their real life experiences on the streets helping young mothers choose life for their unborn baby. March will be a very busy month for our Council. On March 1, our first Fish Fry for the Parish (probably over-with by the time you read this). We are hoping for a big turnout because Chef Bob is planning to purchase 100 lbs of Cod... along with all the other goodies. Prior to our March 7 Council Meeting, and in honor of St Patrick s day, Chef Bob will be cooking Corned Beef and Cabbage for dinner. This is a special event every year because Bob and his helpers prepare quite a feast for all who come... Knights, family and friends. Please spread the word... all are welcome! Then on Sunday March 17 the parish is invited to an Italian dinner in celebration of St Joseph s Day. Tony Giusiana, another brother with amazing culinary talents, will be preparing a traditional Italian Dinner for the parish in the Hall after the 11:30 Mass. 2

3 Grand Knight Message (continued) Congratulations to our Chancellor Bill Whitcomb who was appointed to the position of Retention Director. This is a new position in our Council and it will bring focus to this very important area. Like most organizations we loose a few members each year. If a member is moving away, there isn t much we can do about it. However, some of the reasons we hear involve shortcomings that are within our power to fix. Bill will be focusing on these shortcomings. Each member had a reason for joining. Bill will be spending time with our newer members, learning why they joined and what expectations they have, so he can properly guide them to fulfillment of their goals. A message from Membership Chair and Warden Brother Curt Horner: It is with great pride and honor that I tell you that the following Brothers made their 3rd degree on February 24: Craig Dee Weese, Ray Saracho and Frank Smaldino. Attending Sideliners were: David Rime, Fred Manuel, Corey Strobel and Curt Horner. We are approaching that time of the year when we begin talking about the election of Council Officers for the coming Columbian year. If you are thinking about becoming an Officer, or if you are an Officer and wish to climb the latter so to speak, please see me or see any Officer of your choice, to make your aspirations known. 6 Brother Knights, Donate a Car! As you know many organizations raise money in the name of charities through vehicle donations and it is a guessing game to know how much money really goes to charity. A couple years ago some Knights in Dana Point started a vehicle donation program to be administrated by Knights and all the funds after expenses would be sent back to the councils who donated the vehicles. All the legalities and obstacles have now been overcome and our Council 9195 has joined the program. It is called Ave Maria Catholic Vehicle Donations and the administrating Dana Point Knights have now returned tens of thousands of dollars to councils in California who have participated. Their focus is to market the program through the Knights and other Catholic entities. It is as easy as a phone call to donate an unwanted car. The donating person receives a tax benefit from Ave Maria (501-C-3) for the sale amount of the vehicle and the local council gets the majority of the money. Two of our Brothers Knights have already donated unwanted vehicles to kick off the program for our San Antonio Council. We received over $ about 2 weeks after the vehicles were auctioned. Not a lot of money yet, but if all our Brothers could find just one car in their neighborhood or at work or from family and multiply that single sale by 200 (our current membership) then we could potentially receive $70,000. Double WOW. Please see the flyer on the next page. Your Vehicle Donation Program Committee Chair In Christ Bill Whitcomb 6

9 Brother Knights, Sunshine Report Pope s Prayer Intention Please keep the following Knights and their families in your thoughts and prayers, you might call and wish them the best in their recovery or maybe send a card. Remember, some of these situations just tear at your heart and theirs. Also, if anyone can help in the pickup of Brother Knights to take them for medical treatment, take them to church, or bring them to our council meetings, please or call me. We received a card from the family of Knight Bob O Hare following his death. To thank you for your kindness and sympathy at a time when it was deeply appreciated by the family. Prayers are especially needed for the family of Brother Gonzalo Gonzalez after the passing of his sister-in-law. He said, She is in a better place. Keep Fr. Pat in your prayers following a serious operation at the hospital. He is up and walking around after his operation. He has requested no visits. Keep Deacon Doug in your prayers following his ankle replacement. His operation went well, but there will be a long recovery time. Brother Bob Fiorentino reported on the health of his granddaughter, Jackie. He said, The spot on her lung has shrunk by 1 cm and the edges have smoothed leading the docs to think that the spot is bacterial. She will have another MRI in 4 weeks. If the shrinking continues, they will treat without any surgical action. She needs all of our prayers. The Pope s general intention is: Respect for Nature. That respect for nature may grow with the awareness that all creation is God's work entrusted to human responsibility.. Clergy. That bishops, priests, and deacons may be tireless messengers of the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Brother Ron Spignolio had a knee replacement a while back. He said, I am doing great. I have been working with Jack at Mary's Kitchen for the last two weeks. Brother Memo Garcia asks that we keep his mother-in-law, Mary McCormick, in our prayers. He said, Grandma" had a successful full hip replacement shortly after Thanksgiving. The progress continues to go well. On the 19th, she celebrated her 85th birthday. The hip replacement has been successful to date. 9

10 Sunshine Report (cont) Thanks to everyone for the prayers, they were definitely answered. Brother Gary Murray who was hospitalized following a stroke is now home, but is suffering from prostate cancer. This is a report on his condition from his wife, Linda. She said, The experimental drug was not effective, so he will start chemo next week. Continued prayers for his tolerance of this are much appreciated. Brother Alex Sledge has been ill for several months and has numerous medical problems. Pray for his recovery. This young man needs a lot of prayers. He recently started dialysis for loss of kidney function and then had a heart attack. Brother Bob DePaola asks for prayers for his grandson. He said, There is no change. He is now on Dialysis for good until he is 18 then his name may be put on the waiting list for a transplant. Brother Tony DePaola reported on the health of his family remains the same. He says, Thanks for all for your prayers, Bernetta and Doug are still undergoing treatment and living a happy life day to day. Brother Jim Dawson continues on dialysis three days a week and recently his back has been bothering him due to the accident that cracked his hip. He s going to physical therapy to relieve the pain. He is able to attend meetings and other Knight s functions. Brother Jack Abajian says, My sister is doing better, mom-dad are still not feeling well. I truly appreciate everyone's Prayers and may God Bless you all. _Brother Neil Jouvenant continues to have serious hip and back problems following his hip replacement surgery involving his spine and leg. He hopes to be coming to a meeting soon. Frank Collard says, My sister Darby had to stop the chemo as it was not doing any good. They are using radiation on two tumors in her neck to help the blood flow. No good news so lots of prayers. Her spirit is good and she is getting lots of visitors and family. Get well cards and flowers have been sent to the recently ill Knights. God Bless All Brother Bert Sunshine Chairman 10
