D r. Jo a n ne B rown We are in the liturgical season known as Ordinary Time. It is the longest season and stretches from Pentecost to Advent. It s easy to view Ordinary Time as filler time, in between the strong seasons of the church calendar (Christmas and Easter) the uneventful doldrums that lie between our faith s more dramatic crests and troughs. But Ordinary Time was not named to reinforce this uneventful filler view; in fact, the name of this season comes from the word ordinal (to count/ order) because these are counted Sundays. Far from being uneventful, this season allows us a solid chunk of time to discover and unveil God s grace moving through our lives and the lives around us lives that we are tempted to label as simply ordinary. Y o u t h U p d a t e b y Te d Bro si u s Wendy Wright comments: it is during Ordinary Time, when the intense momentum of the strong, extended cycles of Christmas and Easter are not arresting our attention, that we are perhaps freer to be attentive to the stories of saints who have lived among us and who witness to the extraordinary diversity and creativity of transfigured life. Continued on page 7 Living Abundantly Inside this issue: Joanne s Jottings 1 & 7 Youth Update 1 & 2 Pride Day in Seattle 2 Baby Shower 3 Wow! It s been an amazing nine months, hasn t it? I find it hard to believe that all that time has passed, and so quickly! So what all have we done this year as a youth group? Well, we did three different youth Sunday services, each unique in their own way. They seemed to get better, and far more complex and ambitious, each time. From what I have been told, this is a bit of a new thing for Tibbetts. The youth and I plan on continuing this trend with more youth Sundays next year, and beyond. continued on next page Hand Bell Concert 3 All Church Work Party 4 Tibbetts 6 Communications Alice in Wonderland 8...and so much more!
2 Page 2 Ti di ngs from Ti b b etts Christians In Action THANK YOU! THANK Y0U!.. to all who purchased Church World Service Mother's Day cards. You donated enough to buy 58 blankets, like the one that was on display. We are on the way to blanket the world! June 30th is Gay Pride Day in Seattle, a time to celebrate and to reflect on how far we have come and how far we have to go toward full inclusion of all folks in our society. As a Reconciling Congregation, Tibbetts plans to participate again this year by having a table in the Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center for folks to stop by, find out more about us, and just to witness to the love of God. Look for the sign up sheet in the church entryway to take a shift at the table and share in the joy and surprise. Y o u t h U p d a t e b y Te d Bro si u s Continued from page 1 We ve started a garden to raise fresh vegetables to donate to local foodbanks so that those in need have access to something other than canned or prepared food. The youth are going to be weeding, watering, and harvesting all summer as we grow yummy potatoes, peas, lettuce, squash, and zucchini. Yes, we are raising the dreaded zucchini, because the youth want to make bread to freeze and then have to give away and enjoy all winter long. The youth have participated in many connectional events as well. I took several of our youth to their first ever conference retreats. Some of them enjoyed the experience so much they almost convinced me to leave them at camp at the end of the weekend. The youth group has grown large enough, and broad enough in age, that we have had to split the group into two meetings instead of one per week. This gives us greater flexibility to be able to discuss more age appropriately, and more time to interact. The games room has begun to be organized so it can be used by the youth on a more regular basis, and some old equipment will be swapped out for newer, different equipment to play on. So, what s coming up for the summer, and even into next Fall? We re taking a few youth to CONVO over Memorial Day weekend. We have also become a regular presence at Starlight Sounds dances, and we get to host our own in July! The youth are hosting an end of the year BBQ at the church and Alki Beach for several churches from the Seattle District and beyond. We are participating in a camping trip with Edmonds UMC to a place called Washington Park in Anacortes in July, where we will get to kayak, hike, and learn more about ourselves and God in nature. And of course, we can t forget the mission trip in Portland in late August. And somewhere in all this, we ll be going to Wild Waves to have fun and bond. Then, it is Fall again. There is going to be a huge group of our youngest youth joining Youth Group in September. We re already planning activities and services for the Fall, and into Winter. There will be dances and retreats to attend; services to perform; Parent s Nights Out to organize and run; and many more things. This is an exciting time to jump with both feet into the youth program! Come join us on our many adventures all summer, and beyond!
3 Page 3 Rever end Doc to r Jo a nne C ar ls o n B rown Babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have been blessed with a wonderful number of young ones in our church in the last few years and one of the ways we celebrate that is by welcoming the little one with a shower. June 2 after Fellow - ship Time we will be welcoming Josephine to our family. Josephine is the daughter or Margaret and Sean Gill, our newest church members. All are invited to join us for this celebration of new life. And if you are wondering 6 month and older clothes, toys and of course books would be a great way to say welcome little one to the family. Tibbetts Handbell Spring Concert We invite you to join the Bell choirs for an end of the year celebration on Sunday, June 9 at 4:00 pm. It has been our pleasure to enhance the worship services during this past year and we would love to share a few of our favorites with you. Thank you for all of your support during this past year-and we look forward to seeing you at our Spring concert. The choirs will be taking a summer break, but if you're interested in participating, or having your children or youth involved beginning this fall, please contact Shirley Lindberg for more information. Calling all Grads Finishing a degree or program, whether that be high school, college/ university, trade school, or graduate school is a big accomplishment one that your church family wants to acknowledge and celebrate. If you are graduating or if you know someone in our church who is graduating please call the church office at or at church office@tibbettsumchurch.org so we can have a list. The graduates will be recognized on June 9 during the service. At that time we will also be recognizing our wonderful Sunday School teachers. 6 Page 6 Ti di ngs from Ti b b etts Communications through Tibbetts Tibbetts uses social media, a website, and media partners to keep our congregation and the community aware of who we are and what we re doing, and to extend a Welcome to All. Many of you know that we ve had a website now for nearly 5 years, and that we created a page on Facebook in We use a broadcast list to share current information with many of our members, and we ve been a sponsor of the West Seattle Blog for several years now. We advertise special events in the WS Herald during Advent and at other times, too. These are the various ways that we re reaching out into the West Seattle community and beyond, sharing the Word and encouraging others to join us on our faith journey. Here is more information about the way that Tibbetts shares our story. If you are a computer user and would like to (but haven t) received any from Tibbetts, please let us know! You may simply the church office to request being added to the list. Please send to: Church Office@TibbettsUMChurch.org. We send out important notices or reminders about special events a few times a month, and we promise not to spam! Have you seen our website recently? If not, it has some new content on it and the Home Page is changed every week to share what the scriptures and Sermon title will be for Sunday. We ve got a lot of new pictures on the website now, under the tab labeled EXTRA. Check out our website at Did you know that you don t have to be a Facebook user to see our Facebook page? It s true! You can go to the Tibbetts Facebook page at TibbettsUMChurch and look around without signing up for Facebook! If you re a Facebook user already, if you Like the page you ll get all the latest updates in your newsfeed. We post church events, a ton of pictures, and video whenever possible. It s great! We re always eager for your ideas and suggestions on how we can improve the website and Facebook page, to reach more people and provide information about Tibbetts. The website and Facebook page are part of the Welcome & Outreach Ministry Area, and we d love for you to join us or share your opinions! Save the Date for Family Summer Camp (formerly VBS) Our Family Summer Camp (formerly VBS) will be July To Choose: Early Church heresies and what they mean for us today will be the topic. The children will be taking up the general themes of the day like who is God or Jesus or the Holy Spirit and why do we baptize in age appropriate ways. But most importantly save July from 6-8pm on your calendars and join us for this great opportunity for fellowship and learning and to make it easy someone else will make dinner and cleanup. What a deal!!! All ages are not only welcome, but are encouraged to come!
7 Page 7 Joanne s Jottings Rever end Doc to r Jo a nne C ar ls o n B rown Continued from page 1 Perhaps it is fitting that Ordinary Time occurs in our summertime. If we take it, it can be a time to slow down, to reflect on how our lives are going, to stop and smell the flowers we speed past too often, to spend time with friends and family those we don t see very often and those who are around us every day. It can be a time to appreciate the extraordinary in the ordinary everyday things we do and see. It can be a time to reclaim the importance of what we do with our lives every day. A quote from Barbara Brown Taylor helps us to see this: On Vocation. To believe in one s own Priesthood is to see the extraordinary dimensions of an ordinary life, we see the hand of God at work in the world and to see one s own hands as necessary to that work. Whether those hands are diapering an infant, assembling an automobile or balancing a corporate account, they are God s hands, claimed by God at baptism for the accomplishment of God s will on earth. During worship in these Sundays we experience Jesus teaching and healing, reaching out to and conversing with ordinary people going about their ordinary lives. And into that ordinariness comes this extraordinary, ordinary man and nothing is ever the same again. I hope we will all be able to experience this man again or for the first time in our lives in a real and transforming way. Listen to what he has to say, even if it is in parables hard to understand; watch the way he lives his life and try and live that way; take time to appreciate the beauty of the creation all around us; reach out in love and compassion to those saints and the not-so-saintlys you encounter each day; and follow Jesus in his conviction that being in the company of his friends and of his God in worship was essential to his well-being. Extraordinary things can happen in Ordinary Time. Let us be open to all the possibilities that can mean. Annual Conference Joanne on Vacation Please hold Joanne and Kathy Yackey and Karen Lane in your prayers June along with all the other folks from churches all across the Conference as we gather in Wenatchee for Annual Conference. It will be three jam-packed days of making decisions, worship, talking, finding ways for our Conference to be the best followers of Jesus we can be. Joanne will be on vacation June visiting her friend Lois in Canmore, Alberta surrounded by the majestic Canadian Rockies. If there is a pastoral emergency contact Rev. Jan Bolerjack at Look for a report of happenings in future newsletters.

The Communications Committee has ensured addresses and phone numbers of church members who host events in their home are not published on the internet, and also protects the privacy of its Youth. Facebook.com/TibbettsUMChurch We welcome all people to celebrate and share God's love. Tibbetts Men s Group Alice in Wonderland Croquet Tournament Well it is time for the 2 nd Annual Alice in Wonderland Croquet Tournament. An Alice in Wonderland Croquet Tournament, you ask? Well, why not. We did it last year and fun was had by all. Besides, what better excuse to go out and find a bunch of Pink Flamingos and use them as croquet hoops. Saturday June 8 th 2:00pm in Burien We will have a few games of croquet, maybe one just for the youth, and then one for the young kids And what would an Alice in Wonderland Croquet tournament be without a tea party with cucumber sandwiches, Mad Hatter cookies and pink lemonade. Since this is being sponsored by the men s group, we will have some man food because real men do NOT eat only cucumber sandwiches! And yes, just like last year, you are expected to be in costume for this, even if it is just a crazy hat! To RSVP and get directions please contact the church office.
