Do you regularly attend meetings, reunions and events? Masonry competes with many things in our lives, and we have to make choices where we will spend our time. Your officers are working hard to give you opportunities to attend events sponsored by the Scottish Rite. We have a night at the River Bandits, a boat cruise, hog roast, concealed carry class, and a Christmas party planned. Look for more details in this issue of the Chimes. On June 27th Brothers Eric Noyd and David Ziegler received their MSA degrees at our annual ICOD meeting held this year in Springfield. Unfortunately we cancelled the Spring Reunion because of the lack of candidates. Fortunately, we already have two candidates for our Fall Reunion, and I am sure we will have many more. Our Thrice Potent Master Greg Washabaugh, and his officer's will be having a degree at our September 8th Meeting. The Fall reunion will be held October 2nd, and 3rd, We will being serving a steak and lobster banquet on Saturday evening. Look for full details in the fall Chimes which you will receive in mid-september. I am sure there are fellow Blue Lodge Brethren who would benefit in receiving further light in Masonry. Why not ask them to join us at the Fall Reunion? We hope to see you in attendance to support your brethren in the degrees. On September 1st brother Donald R. Wood MSA will receive his 33rd degree in Indianapolis, Indiana at the 203rd Annual Supreme Council Meeting. The Valley is looking for someone who is interested in being our treasurer. They would be responsible for providing reports to our Cathedral board, and to prepare our budget. Newell, Ph.D., Director of Collections, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library Development Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, MA Brotherly Cooperation: A Master s Chair from Ohio One of the most unusual items in the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library collection is a handcrafted Master s chair fashioned in a rural style, and painted with Masonic symbols. Some of the paint used on the chair employs metallic powders, which would have glowed under the lodge room lights. The chair was made around 1870 and is marked by maker John Luker (b. 1838). Another inscription on the chair reads JHM Houston s. Historical records tell us that Houston was Master of Swan Lodge No. 358 in New Mount Pleasant, Vinton County, Ohio, from 1867 to The lodge was relatively new when the chair was made, having been chartered in In 1871, a new lodge building was dedicated, so the chair may have been made for the new space. The chair came to the Museum & Library accompanied by a pair of matching columns, and two candle stands (presumably a third completed the set originally, but is now lost). Records about maker John Luker s life are sparse. His Masonic membership is unclear, although a Joseph Luker was initiated into Swan Lodge in That same year, John Luker is listed on the U.S. Census as living in Washington Township, part of Ohio s Hocking County, and north of Vinton County, where the chair was used. At the time, Joseph Luker, 21 years old, and presumably John s younger brother, was living in the same house. Joseph s job is listed as metallic roofing business, suggesting a supplier for the metallic powders that John used when painting the chair. The chair is decorated with Masonic symbols. The most prominent symbol appears at top center a square and compasses with G in the center. When the chair was originally painted, the G must have stood out it was painted bright blue, and has blue glass mixed in, giving it a texture that glints in light. The sides of the chair s back form columns topped with globes. Additional symbols are painted on the back, the arms and front of the seat, including five-point stars, candelabra, sabers, an apron with an all-seeing eye on the flap, and a cabletow. In addition, there are symbols for officers a square, level and plumb; a slipper representing the Entered Apprentice degree; and symbol for the Royal Arch Mark Master chisels, crossed mallets, and an archway with a keystone. The symbols are painted onto the chair, but give an appearance comparable to popular inlay motifs on high-style furniture from the mid- and late-1800s. Inlay was often made of mahogany or ivory, materials that were expensive, and hard to find, so were used sparingly. The inlay was usually darker or lighter than the base wood. This contrast set off these elements and motifs. Many of the painted motifs on this chair are lighter than the darker blue paint. The chair s maker mixed elements of several furniture styles. The legs are X- shaped supports known as Grecian or curule bases. Initially made popular in the 1810s and 1820s by high-style craftsmen like Duncan Phyfe ( ), this element enjoyed a resurgence as part of the Renaissance Revival in the 1860s and 1870s, when this chair was made. The curule style was originally taken from a Roman magistrate s folding chair. The carved paw-shaped feet seem to be inspired by the elegant call, and claw feet that were so common on Chippendale- (Continued on page 3)

3 3 style furniture from the 1760s. By combining these features, this Master s chair is a wonderful example of folk art, and rural style. Hog Roast At Arlo Sloan s Home A hog roast is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, September 2015 at our Lieutenant Commander s home in Osco, IL. It will begin around 2:30 p.m. Watch the Valley Voice announcements and the Fall Chimes for more details. Concealed Carry Classes at the Scottish Rite Sovereign Prince Earl F. Wys 33º will conduct Concealed Carry Classes at the Scottish Rite on Saturday, September26 th and Sunday, September 27 th, Normally the Class cost is $250. He will present the class to Masons and their family members for $100 each plus a yet to be determined Range Cost (likely $10 to $20 each). The Range will likely be an indoor range. The class will position attendees to be able to apply for IL, UT and FL Concealed Carry Permits. With these permits attendees will be able to carry a concealed firearm in 36 States. The Classes will run from 9 AM to 5 PM both days.

Our District Official Visit was April 11th, and Western Rite was held that evening. Both events were a success, and we are so grateful for the dignitaries that were able to attend. We will have our 1st Annual Parent s Degree on Saturday, June 27th at 1:00pm. The Parent s Degree is ceremony to honor the girls parents, and the adults who support Rainbow. We are sure it will be a huge success! After the Parent s Degree we will have our 2nd Annual Lend-A-Hand Exchange. The Lend-A-Hand Exchange is an opportunity for you to bid on two girls, and a female adult chaperone for two hours to do yard work, housework, or any kind of errands. (This doesn t include travel time.) If you are interested in hiring two girls, and a female chaperone for housework, or yard work, and were unable to attend please contact Jeni Hoeper at (563) Moline Assembly is getting ready to go to Grand in Springfield on July 1st-5th. This is a fantastic opportunity for the girls to meet other girls from all over the state, run for state positions, see the state officers perform ritual, and do ritual competition. Our next installation will be Sunday, July 26th at 12:30pm. We would love to see you there! Our stated meetings are the 2nd and 4th Thursday's of the month at 6:45pm and we would love for you to come. Thank you for all of your support; each and every single one of you impact the girls in Moline Assembly s lives more that you know, and without it they wouldn t be the wonderful young ladies that they are. Thomas Fuller Dyslexic Reading Solutions for Children Dyslexia Learning Center Update We are pleased to announce a recent grant from the Moline Foundation to cover costs of much needed Administrative computer equipment. Their generosity is enabling us to purchase a desktop computer, laptop, and software for our Dyslexia Learning Center. It is our constant goal to assist in making the education of dyslexic children manageable by the tools we teach. With the support of our patrons, we can continue to achieve our goals.
