Another reunion has come and gone. The William G. Schlobohm 33 Class had two candidates: Brothers James Sager and Daniel Beug who also is our newest 520 club member. We have gained two fine members and I m sure they will be an asset to our Valley. I would like to thank everyone who helped make the reunion a success. While there are many people who helped I would like to especially thank our director of work Brother Dean Sheese who made sure the degrees went off without any problems despite dealing with the lost of his father the same week. Thanks also go out to the Rainbow Girls and their parents who helped serve the meals. We held our 2 nd Annual Fish Fry on Good Friday. Brother Tim Vice MSA was in charge and did another fine job. Brothers Jamie Emery, Mick Nelsen, Nathan Stone and Ill Brothers Arlo Sloan MSA 33 and Bill Endres MSA 33 did the cooking. We would also like to thank the Rainbow Girl s and their parents for helping serve. As my tenure as Commander in Chief comes to a close I would like to thank everyone who helped me the last two years. While there are too many to list I would like to thank brothers Jamie Emery, James Barnes, Greg Washabaugh MSA, Dave Ziegler MSA and ILL Earl Wys 33 who served as a head of the body in the respective line. I would also like to give a shout out to the office help that I worked with the three Executive Secretaries ILL Arthur Hemm MSA 33, Brother Joe Laleman and Edward Walker 33 and the assistant secretaries Susan Nicholson and Lila Crosby. I would also like to thank ILL Brother Bill Endres MSA 33 for all he did especially when things got changed at the last minute. And last but not least I would like to thank my wife Mary Kay and family for the help and understanding when I was away at meetings and such. As we look ahead in the Valley of Moline while there is some uncertainty with the possible sale of the building there is much to look forward to. Your officers are putting together some exciting events in the coming months. We are always looking for things to do for our members so if you know of something that would benefit our valley let them know. We have a fine group of officers coming up and I m sure the Valley will be in good hands. Lauren Crawford MSA 33rd (309)

It is hard to imagine not too long ago there was no Facebook or Twitter. Many years ago people were actually waiting to hear from each other via a telephone call, a personal visit, or an actual letter. How did social media come to influence our life and our society in general? Most of it has had a positive affect on our widening views of the world we live in. Social media has definitely brought us closer to other parts of the world - not all of closeness has been positive. We are living in a time where the world is open to us. We can contact anyone around the world at any time by just typing in a few letters or words. And it is free, unlike a long distance phone call. Sharing of documents and photos is now an easy task. Distance does not stop you from becoming a part of another person s life. Social media has made it possible for like minded individuals to discuss issues that are important to them and to discover things that they never knew about previously. Young people are now getting involved in politics. Just look at the last two presidential elections and the effect on younger voters. Non-profits, namely our Masonic Fraternity, are seeing the benefits of using social media to being their message before those that might show an interest in joining. Petitions are readily available on most Masonic websites, easy to fill out and submit. But not all of this new technology has been of value. One bad thing is that it has allowed the user of social media to hide behind a computer, tablet, or smartphone screen without having to go out into the world and socialize. You can have a strong feeling of having friends all over the globe without having to build any relationship with them. Stop and think just how many friends you have currently on Facebook. When was the last time you actually saw any of them on a regular basis? Some of what social media has done is just plain ugly. Think about how many relationships may have been broken up over social networks. How many Masonic meetings have been missed because of an obsession with Facebook postings? How many friendships have been lost due to some stupid, vain posting? In the end, there have been some positive effects of social media along with some bag. Try to keep your own life centered on what is important - Friendship, Morality, and Brotherly Love. By doing this, you will be just fine. If not, it might be time to turn off the computer for a bit and go do something important.

4 4 A Portrait of a Freemason Aimee E. Newell, Ph.D., Director of Collections Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, MA In our recent exhibition, Every Variety of Painting for Lodges : Decorated Furniture, Paintings and Ritual Objects from the Collection, we included a few portraits from the collection showing men wearing jewelry or regalia that identified them as Masons. As we explained in the exhibition, sometimes these portraits marked personal achievements, like holding a lodge office, while other times they allowed the sitter to proclaim his affiliation with the fraternity as a valued part of his self-identity. Recently, we acquired another portrait of a man wearing a simple black coat and white shirt, with a yellow pin at the center of his shirt in the shape of a square and compasses symbol. Unfortunately, there was no information with the portrait about its provenance or the identity of the subject. We were interested in adding it to the collection because it showed the value this member placed on his Masonic activities. But, during the cataloging process, we noticed that the portrait is signed by its artist. Artist Edward Hill ( ) was born in England, but grew up in Massachusetts. He began his painting career in Gardner, Massachusetts, where he worked at the Heywood-Wakefield Company, and later moved to New Hampshire. In New Hampshire, Hill became a well-known landscape painter, part of the White Mountain school of artists. His brother Thomas was also part of this school. Edward Hill worked as a resident artist at some of the mountain resorts. This allowed him to increase awareness and sales of his work, while the hotel attracted visitors who wanted to see an artist working. Toward the end of his life, Hill moved to Oregon where he died in While it was exciting to discover that this portrait was painted by a known artist, it was even more exciting to discover that Edward Hill was a Mason himself! In Massachusetts, his membership record lists him as an ornamental painter and tells us that he was a member of Orange Lodge in He demitted from that lodge in 1879, probably because of his move to New Hampshire. Hill remained active in Freemasonry in New Hampshire. The records at the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire list two Edward Hills: one joined Nashua s Rising Sun Lodge No. 39 in The other joined Manchester s Washington Lodge No. 61 in It seems likely that the artist Edward Hill was the man who belonged to Rising Sun Lodge No. 39. That lodge is also listed on his membership card in Massachusetts. In addition, Hill was a member of Union Royal Arch Chapter and of Burns Lodge No. 66 in Littleton (according to dues cards in a collection of family papers at the New Hampshire Historical Society). When he moved to Oregon, he joined Hood River Lodge No. 105 and Hood River Royal Arch Chapter No. 27. We still don t know who this subject was, but it seems quite possible that he was a Masonic brother of artist Edward Hill. For now, we are happy to add this portrait to our collection and to be able to tell the story of the value that artist and sitter both placed on their Masonic membership. Photo : Unidentified Man, 1896, Edward Hill ( ), probably New Hampshire, collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Photograph by David Bohl.

5 5 Chiming in on the Chimes!!! With Don Woods MSA 33 River Bend Bronze River Bend Bronze, established in January of 2013, is a community handbell choir based in the Quad City area. Members of the group come from the Quad Cities proper as well as surrounding communities and at one point even as far away as Cedar Falls, IA and Springfield, IL. The group consists of auditioned ringers. Three of the ringers presently direct other handbell choirs in their own churches. The director of the group, Larry B. Peterson, is Director of Music for Campus Ministries at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL where he conducts the college s two handbell choirs: the Ascension Ringers and the Steeple Ringers. Some of the highlights this group has experienced in just its short history have been: playing to a standing room only crowd at Augustana College s Ascension Chapel for its inaugural concert, playing at the 2014 Bishop Hill Midsummer Music Festival, playing for the worship service for the 2014 Area 8 Regional Convention of the Handbell Musicians of America in Davenport, as well as numerous other local engagements. The group recently took on the gigantic task of hosting the famous Raleigh Ringers of Raleigh, NC in concert in The group plays advanced literature from the handbell repertoire. The pieces range in style and complexity from arrangements of pre-existing melodies (mostly hymn-based) to original compositions for handbell choirs, some intended purely for concert use. The group rings a 5 octave set of Schulmerich Handbells and for the holiday concert they add a 6 octave set of choir chimes. Other auxiliary instruments are incorporated as needed depending on the needs of the composition. For more information about the group performing a concert for your venue, please contact Larry B. Peterson at larrypeterson@augustana.edu. A little before Lodge is about to open, an old man totters up to the Tyler and says, I m here to receive my second degree. Well, they all look at this guy who really is older than dirt and they ask him to explain. I was entered on July 4, Now I am ready for my second degree. So they go scurrying for the records and, sure enough, there was his name, entered on July 4, Where have you been all these years? What took you so long to be ready for your second? they ask. 7 7 Event after event, us Moline Rainbow Girls never have a dull moment. On April 9th, we had our District's Official Visit in which the Grand Family watched Moline, Faith, and Bushnell assemblies preform opening and closing ritual and honored their Grand Officers and Grand Representatives. That night the Grand Officers initiated 3 new members into the Order. Not only have we been working on membership, but we've been working tirelessly to raise money for both the Shriners Hospital in Chicago and Project Linus. Coming up very soon is our annual Rainbow Leadership Camp, which will be at the end of June. Shortly after that, July 6th through the 10th, is Grand Assembly in Springfield. This event is complete with an initiation, installation, a banquet, and even ritual competition. None of these events could be possible without our sponsoring orders. The Moline Rainbow Girls appreciate all the support we are given throughout the year by our Masonic Bodies. We would like to invite you all to our meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month at 6:30. It means so much for the girls to have dignitaries there and we love to be able to communicate with all of you. As we love your support, we love to support you all as well, therefore if there are any events requiring extra hands, we would be honored to assist in that. In Rainbow love and service, Gabby Hoeper Treasurer of Moline Assembly and Grand Service Catch The Rainbow From The Secretary s Desk Ed Walker 33 It is that time of the year again as the Valley of Moline prepares for its Annual Meeting and Election of Officers for the ensuing Masonic year. Candidates are needed to step into a leadership role in the Lodge of Perfection, Council, Princes of Jerusalem, and Rose Croix lines. As the old saying goes - We are looking for a few good men. You should have a strong desire to be a leader, good at ritual, and a sincere wish to be of further service to Scottish Rite Masonry. The Valleys of Moline and Peoria had a joint meeting of MSA and 33 members in Galesburg to discuss matters that have an affect on their Valleys. While further discussion and meetings are needed and scheduled, some good ideas came out of the meeting. Stay tuned for announce- ments from the incoming Command-in- Chief. Rentals of our great building continue to provide income and an opportunity for the public to view the building and to learn more about Scottish Rite Masonry. We have had quite an assortment of rentals, from weddings to dance recitals to ballet to high school boosters, each and everyone speaking highly of our facilities and of the excellent assistance they receive from Bill and John Clark. Bookings are coming in for the rest of this year and into 2017.
