April 2015 PRESIDENT S REPORT For those of you that were present at our 15 February meeting in Chandler, some of this you ll have heard before. My name is George Lipphardt, a member of the Tucson Chapter. I ve been an SAR member for about 7 years. I ve been a Chapter Vice President & President & the AZ Society Color Guard Commander for about 3 years. Ok, enough about me. Thank you all that attended our 118 th Annual State Meeting, in February. I want to thank President Cantrall for his two years of service as our President. Our organization has done well under his leadership. I also want to thank all of the State Officers and Committee Chairmen and volunteers that have done so much for us. Arizona Society Officers: We have a new Officer position this year, that of Compliance Officer: The new Compliance Officer Position was mandated with the April 2014 Bylaws, under the Code of Organization Conduct. Charles Aurand from the Tucson Chapter has accepted my request to serve in this new position for this year. We have two new Officers this year; one is Ed Karr from the Barry Goldwater Chapter. He has volunteered to be our new Registrar Officer. Ed will be looking at all of the new member applications to make sure that all of the necessary information is there, just like your high school English teacher. Our previous Registrar Officer got promoted to the Chapter President position for the Barry Goldwater Chapter thank you Bill Hearter for doing a wonderful job as Registrar. Since he took over this year, Ed has been keeping me updated on his progress. As of 06 March, we have admitted 21 new members with 9 new applications submitted. We have 11 new Junior members admitted and 3 applications pending. Six Supplementals (those members that have discovered additional Patriot ancestors) approved and 2 in the works. Outstanding, Ed. *One of the most important duties of all of us, is to recruit new members to our organization. The second new officer is State Treasurer; Ed Steinback, from the Prescott Chapter. Thank you Ed for taking over this position. This will take a lot of the work-load from Secretary Warren Alter, who still Chair s four Committees. Much like Mike Jones, these two members wear many hats. All of their work is most appreciated. We have an opening right now for the Society Genealogist Officer. Dr. Duffey of the Tucson Chapter has been doing this for many years (and doing an excellent job), and he d like to turn the reins over to someone else. In this officer position, you d be helping Ed Karr and Chapter genealogists and registrars in the examining and processing of applications. Please give this some thought and contact either myself or Dr. Duffey if you d like this state officer position. Although not an official position, I ve asked Al Niemeyer of the Tucson Chapter to be our Public Affairs representative. As you are all aware, Al has been doing this job for years for us, he will now continue doing his normal great job, with my blessings. Committee Chairmen for 2015: I am pleased that the majority of chairmen have agreed to serve another year, and we do have a new chairman I would like to recognize here, for the Americanism Committee: Allen Nash from the Saguaro Chapter. The job of the Americanism Committee is to tabulate all of the SAR activity conducted by our chapters, and apply those activities/events into points, for medals and awards to be given at Congress. Please be sure to send Allen your information throughout the year, as he needs to submit our annual report at the end of each year. Thank you Allen. And for all of you volunteers that will continue with your Officer and Chairmen positions..we all very much appreciate your service to our organization, thank you. I think that Jan Huber (Saguaro Chapter) has earned the endurance metal for I believe is now his 8 th year as chapter president? Thank you Jan. And Congratulations to all of our new Presidents. State of the State/Society: Secretary Alter has stated that our Society is in good shape. As of early 2015, our Society had 458 members; we continue to grow. While Warren was still our Treasurer, he advised that our finances are also in good shape. As previously mentioned, our new Treasurer is Ed Steinback. New History Page on our website. Thanks to the investigations and contributions by David Swanson of the Barry Goldwater Chapter, there is now a lot more information on our Society s history available to learn about. Take some time to read it, on the Organization tab on our webpage. David has also agreed to submit his history facts & stories to our editor, Bill Aurand, for everyone to read in the SARIZONA newsletter. Thank you David. While I m on the topic of our website; I want to mention the fantastic job that our new webmaster, Bob Vint (the elder) has been doing. Thank you Bob. Volunteering is a very important part of our organization. The society runs on volunteers. If you do not currently volunteer for a chapter or state position, please consider doing so. Find an area that you are interested in, and contact the guy in charge, and ask how you can help. We have positions in the Society that need volunteers. As previously mentioned, some guys are the Chairs of more than one Committee. They probably could use some help? Hints: The Americanism Committee could probably use help & the Color Guard is a lot of fun! Plus, we do need a new Genealogist Officer. I don t have any plans to change how we do things. We seem to be operating very well as a Society. At this point in time, I m going to continue to have our state meetings in Casa Grande, as it appears to be the most favorable location for a majority of our membership. Our next BOM meeting is on 18 April, in Casa Grande. The date/time and location for our November BOM Meeting will depend on the President Generals schedule, as that s the meeting when we invite him to Arizona. Continue to check the Calendar on our website, for updates. I m not going to forget our wonderful, Ladies Auxiliary. What a great, supportive group they are. Guys, encourage your ladies to join. 3 Registrar Ramblings Ed Karr, AZSSAR Registrar This year through 21 Mar 2015, NSSAR approved 39 AZ applications, including 2 previously Pended ones. We have 25 applications in the pipeline for NSSAR review. NSSAR s Application Preparation Manual can be accessed from the NSSAR homepage on the Membership tab. Please note on pages the appropriate way to cite supporting documentation. Pages have an example of the formats for a model SAR application. During 2015 we are aligning our application submissions with the standards shown on those 4 pages. Please help our Registrars and Genealogists meet these standards. When preparing your application documentation please underline in red ink the text for the names, dates, places and relationships to prove the lineage. That helps the Genealogist locate the ship of needed proof information sometimes sunk in a sea of textual data. Toss them a life line to anchor the textual data to its appropriate generation number in the margin. Help save the applicant from having a Pended Application and perhaps get it approved quicker. Whether preparing the documentation for your Supplemental Application or helping someone prepare a New Member Application, everyone should retain a personal file copy of all submitted supporting documentation. In fact, that is also a good place to store an extra copy of the approved NSSAR Record Copy you receive when your application is approved. Calling SAR-Masons for our SAR Headquarters Cornerstone Laying The National Society Sons of the American Revolution purchased the Fulton Conway building (an1850 era tobacco storage building) on West Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky to relocate their Library and HQ. As a member of the inspection team to evaluate the building, I was looking for a cornerstone in the building. It did not have one! President General and Brother Master Mason David Appleby and I formed a plan to have a Symbolic Cornerstone Laying Ceremony at the Fall 2009 Leadership meeting. Implementation of the ceremony would include: Invite Grand Master and his line officers of Grand Lodge of Kentucky Free & Accepted Masons plus all NSSAR Master Masons and Master Masons of Louisville Lodge No.400 George Washington s gavel from Potomac Lodge George Washington s trowel The trowel used by George Washington when he laid the cornerstone of the United States Capitol in 1793 was permitted to be taken from the archives of Alexandria- Washington Lodge Commemorative Masonic aprons for all Masons to be purchased at a profit for CAAH Fast forward to 2015: The Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. &A.M. is being contacted about the possibility of forming a new Masonic Lodge in Louisville, KY that only NSSAR/Master Masons can join. I quote Brother & Compatriot Les Foster By having this lodge, Historical Lodge George Washington and Masonic Founding Fathers of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky F. & A.M., it would be an asset to both The Grand Lodge and the NSSAR. We are in the process of updating the 2008 list of NSSAR Master Masons and Past Masters as the foundation and Charter Members of the new Lodge. SAR members have been asked to seek other Master Masons in their chapters. There are over 200 men on my current list but I m sure there are many more who qualify. We are also adding new members to the NSSAR chapters and to lodges across the country. Wouldn t you like to be a member of such an elite group? Country Gables Dr. Phoenix, Arizona Arizona State Color Guard AZ Commander Steve Miller I personally want to thank the members of the AZSSAR Color Guard for their participation in the three main events in Feburary 15. We were able to show others that we believe in patriotism and what our Founding Fathers believed in when they fought for America's freedom. The events included the State Annual meeting in Chandler on 15 Feb, the parade on 21 Feb in Sacaton honoring the 70th anniversary of the capture of Iwo Jima and Ira Hayes, and the 123rd annual George Washington's Birthday Rifle match in Phoenix which included a six musket salute to our flag. Washington s Birthday Rifle Match Event in Phoenix) In Memoriam AZSSAR Past State President Kenneth Glyn Hales With regrets I inform you of the passing of a past VPG Rocky Mt District, and Past State President AZSSAR. 3

4 Former SAR Member (joined 9/15/1988 and dropped his membership in 2009 but was actively pursuing through PV Chapter to rejoin, just had not done so yet), Kenneth Glyn Hales, DOB 8/25/1933 passed away (per his wife Judy) 3/7/15. Ken Hales was a Past Chapter President Tucson Chapter in He was the 71 st President of the AZSSAR from And he was VPG Rocky Mountain District Ken received many recognitions in SAR including, Bronze Good Citizenship Medal, Silver Good Citizenship Medal, State Meritorious Service Medal, and the State Patriot Medal. He sponsored many into our organization and had been awarded at least one Liberty Medal. A little bit of AZSSAR and Arizona history By David A. Swanson, Barry M. Goldwater Chapter Historian Throughout the last several years I have been printing a history column about the early days of the Arizona Society Sons of the American Revolution in the Barry M. Goldwater Chapter newsletter. I have been invited to produce the same column, on an ongoing basis, for SAR-IZONA, (some of the information will be a repeat for BMG Compatriots), but for this first column I will start with information that is not a repeat to anybody. It is time to add two more AZSSAR presidents to our presidential line up! I was able to obtain photo copies (PFD s) of two booklets written by the Arizona Society in 1910 and 1921 (a third in my possession written in 1899 has no bearing on this article). The booklets are each titled: Arizona Society Sons of the American Revolution Officers, Constitution and Bylaws, List of Members, General Information [commas added] with the appropriate date. They list the state officers, some of which are in conflict with the excellent book written by Compatriot John Williams in 1996 titled: The Arizona Society Sons of the American Revolution Centennial Register. The Centennial Register lists the following in regard to some of our early AZSSAR presidents: Mark Alfred Rodgers (14 th ) 22 Feb (2 terms). These dates actually cover three terms. It then continues, correctly listing Roy Thomas as being elected on 22 Feb The Arizona Society 1921 booklet lists the following: Dr. Mark A. Rodgers 1912 [one term] and it continues listing past presidents as follows: Joseph L. B. Alexander 1913 and Rt. Rev. J. W. Atwood Additionally, the March 1915 edition of the Official Bulletin of the National Society Sons of the American Revolution has this to say under the headline of Doings of State Societies Arizona: At the annual meeting in 1913 Joseph L. B. Alexander was elected President and Rt. Rev. J. W. Atwood Vice-President; and in 1914 the President was Rt. Rev J. W. Atwood and Dr. Roy E. Thomas Vice-President, instead of the names printed in the National Year Books for those years. The order of vice presidents to presidents shown in the Official Bulletin and the past presidents shown in the Arizona Society 1921 booklet matches this also fills in the two term/three term discrepancy noted in the Centennial Register. So, entering on the stage of AZSSAR history (although as far as they knew they were already on it), please welcome our AZSSAR 15 th President Joseph L. B. Alexander and our 16 th President Rt. Rev. J. W. Atwood! This makes Dr. Roy E. Thomas, who was listed as our AZSSAR 15 th president, actually the 17 th and so on up our AZSSAR presidential numbering ladder to our current president. Help Find Our Missing Charters Compatriots; We are currently conducting a search for any of our three missing Charters. If you read the history of our Society on the Home Page (under Organization); ml you can become familiar with this history. As of today, all three Charters are unaccounted for. The Arizona Society Early History June 13, June 13, November 2014: Update on our Missing Arizona Charters: The document about our history was most likely written in 1993 by John Williams and Bernard Schmidt. At this time, none of the Arizona Charters can be accounted for. Many society members have spent time and energy trying to locate them, to no avail. With the assistance of our current Secretary-Treasurer, Warren Alter, we have been able to determine who our Society Historians were since about 1996 (except the year of 1997). John Williams (1996), Unknown (1997), Michael Pratt ( ), Bob Ackley (2006), Dr. Rudy Byrd (2006 to present). Unfortunately John Williams, Michael Pratt and Bernard Schmidt have all passed away, so we were unable to obtain any further information from them. Our President for was George Reece. He is currently living in Mesa, Arizona. He thought that the Historian at that time might have been a Bernard Williams? Further research revealed it was Bernard Schmidt. Secretary-Treasurer Warren Alter reports that all of the paperwork and documents that were handed down from Michael Pratt and Bob Ackley did not contain any of our Charters. We are still looking. 23 November 2014 update; Past President, Walter Seaton spoke with John Williams widow, Fran Williams. John was President in Walter was advised by Fran that she remembered her husband bringing the Charter to some of the state meetings. She advised Walter that her husband turned the Charter over to his vice president, when he became President. That would have been James Wallace Polk (1985 President). We are pretty sure that he has passed away? Warren Alter has an address for Kenneth Hales (1992 President), however he has yet to reply to me. The phone number isn t good. 4

5 I called Major McCreery (1993 President), who lives in Green Valley, and he can t recall ever seeing one of our Charters. So at this time, it appears that our 3 rd Charter became misplaced between 1985 and November 2014: 2014 President of the Barry Goldwater Chapter, David Swanson, was given a box of AZSSAR items from Rob Bohanan (son of Robert Bohanan our 1991 President). No charters were in the box. If you know any of these living Past Presidents (prior to 1993), or family members of our Past Presidents listed here, please make the attempt to contact them to see if they know where our Charter is. It/they could be in a box in someone s closet? Special thanks to the compatriots who took the time to join us at our State Conference January 31. Members and families were excited to welcome AZSSAR President Mr. Arthur Cantrall as he attended in period costume and told all of his patriot s history and the significance of his outfit. Other SAR Members present included Warren Alter, Ed Karr, and Walter Seaton. Thanks to a donation from AZSSAR Secretary Warren Alter, A.S.C.A.R. members and guests also received copies of the NSSAR Declaration of Independence/Constitution Booklets. State President Carly Caylor was a gracious hostess for the meeting. She shared with all the fabulous success of her State Project thanks to the assistance of C.A.R, SAR, and DAR members. Her State Project, The Butterfly Effect Everything You Do Matters, gathered over $3,000 in donations, over $500 in supplies and an additional 1,600 items donated, over 100 cards of support and encouragement, and at least 70 volunteer hours were donated in support of Integrative Touch for Kids in Tucson, AZ. Officer elections were held at the C.A.R. State Conference with a competitive race for the office of State President. We look forward to introducing you to Jason Knorr, State President , as he unveils plans for his upcoming State Project. Jason will be installed at Mount Vernon April 19 as part of the National Convention Annual Pilgrimage. A.S.C.A.R. members had a great time during the C.A.R. State Conference creating table favors for the AZSSAR Annual Meeting. Admittedly, the best part for the kids may have been the good fortune to have extra candy on hand when filling the boxes 2 for the box, one for me! Senior National Vice President Rocky Mountain Region Helen Seaton, State President Carly Caylor, Senior State President Lezlee Alexander, and Senior First Vice President Ed Karr send their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to AZSSAR for the honor of being awarded the AZSSAR Silver Medal of Appreciation. State President Carly Caylor was thrilled to be able to share news of her State Project with SAR compatriots. Getting A New Headstone For Your Patriot Ancestor I want to share with you some information for getting a new Headstone from the VA for your Patriot Ancestor. The Headstone is free for your ancestor. I looked up on line for Government Headstones or Markers and found the proper form for getting a VA headstone for free. The form is VA Form , Claim for Standard Government Headstone or Marker. I had to fill out the form with all of the data they needed. It took a while because I had to send it to the cemetery care taker for a statement and signature, then I had to send it to where the stone would be sent for that signature. Within 3 months the Headstone was shipped to the requested address. It weighed about 260 pounds. You can then hold a grave marking ceremony by the state SAR with an SAR bronze lug. The endowment fund should grow annually to continue support of approved NSSAR activities and projects. The GWEF serves as an umbrella under which gifts are placed. Earnings from the contributions over the years have helped to finance a wide variety of programs and projects. Fund raising activities are conducted at the National level, during the Leadership meetings and the annual Congress. Chapters and Societies are encouraged to establish a program to accept GWEF donations on a continuing basis. Each Chapter and Society should appoint a chairman to coordinate the GWEF program and to maintain records of all contributors for recognition. The Vice Presidents General should also have guidelines for Chapters and Societies to assist in GWEF fund raising activities. 6

7 All gifts are important and are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Individuals donating $1,000 or more are recognized as George Washington Fellows. The gifts may be paid in a lump sum amount or in installments of $200 or more annually over a fiveyear period. Each person recognized as a GW Fellow shall receive a distinctive lapel pin and a certificate denoting his or her status. Zachary was also the Palo Verde Chapter's first place winner. So far this year we have presented five certificates to new Eagle Scouts and are encouraging them to enter this year's contest by December 31st. Also, we are proud to report that last year's Eagle Scout Essay Contest state winner, and his younger brother, are now the newest members of the Palo Verde Chapter. Goldwater Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution was chartered on November 16, 2002, and currently serves those Compatriots living in North Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, Carefree, and Fountain Hills, AZ. The Barry M. Goldwater Chapter February Meeting By David Swanson Our speaker for the night was none other than our Chapter President, William Hearter; whose presentation was in the form of a DVD covering the history of Landis Valley, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 8 In Memoriam John Duane Large Compatriot John Duane Large, passed away14 January 201,5 after a short but difficult battle with cancer. John was very proud and excited to become a member of the SAR and to pass that legacy down to his son Jerry and grandchildren. John is survived by his wife Nancy Viola Callahan and son Jerry William Large. John was the son of Raymond Albert Large and Louise Ringel and was born 18 April 1949 in Ogden, Utah. John became a member of the Colorado River Chapter in John s Patriot ancestor was Joseph Large a Private in Captain Kinsey s Company of North Carolina Militia under Colonel Brevard. New Member Sworn In On 14 February 2015 at our meeting in Kingman at Mohave Community College, the Chapter s newest member, Paul Mauser, was sworn in. Paul s Patriot ancestor is Lovell Bryan of Hanover Parish, King George County, Virginia. Lovell provided Patriotic Service by furnishing supplies and horses to Virginia Militia. Paul lives in Kingman, and his wife Robin is the Publisher/CEO of the Kingman Daily Miner. The Palo Verde Chapter meets at 8:30 AM on the second Saturday of each month (Oct. through May) at the Dobson s Restaurant, 2155 S. Dobson Road, Mesa, AZ... During June, July, and Aug. we meet once each month socially in the evenings at various restaurants. Each September we remember 9/11 and honor fire fighters at an evening dinner. In January we installed our new officers with Jim Skaggs leading the way as Chapter President. We also heard from our own Col. Ed Boyd on how to properly display SAR medals. In February we heard the history of Mesa from Dil Brinton Jr., a fifth generation Mesa resident. March's meeting featured Patrick Oakley from the Mesa-Gateway airport with an update on this rapidly growing airport and the exciting plans for future expansion. Coming up we are looking forward to hearing from Amy Mazzoli in April on CIA operations at Fort Huachuca. Johnson was 90 years old, DOB 04/30/1924. He was approved for membership 01/17/2000 (originally as a member of Skyline Chapter (that chapter later merged with Tucson). His patriot was Michael Johnson. He is survived by his sons David and John F Johnson, who are SAR members. In 1965 Sun City was a new community and efforts to form a chapter of SAR were accomplished by a dedicated group from the Aqua Fria Chapter of the DAR and the Arizona Society of the SAR. The Charter members of the Saguaro Chapter were Charles E. Stevens, Hugh Buxton, Warren Donaldson, Lewis K. Leonard, Roy Martin DeWitt, James Emmett Griffin, Peter Charles Mattison, William W. Gorton, James Edgar Nash, Howard N. Lentz, Gerrit V.D. Cortelyou, Van K. Wolcott, Clifford L. Stone, Chester J. Wright, and Frank Oliver Garrett. The first president of the Saguaro Chapter was Frank O. Garrett. Officers were installed at a luncheon Saturday, April 17, 1965 at the Sun City Community Center.
