Later in the meeting, I had the pleasure of installing the 2015 officers for the Prescott Chapter. I am looking forward to our annual meeting February 15, 2015 where President General, Lindsey C. Brock will be our guest at a dinner-reception and our speaker and he will later conduct the install the state officers for I look forward to meeting all of you and working with you in the coming year. Arizona State Society, C.A.R. By Lezlee Alexander, Sr. State President, A.S.C.A.R. Greetings on behalf of all of Arizona s C.A.R. members! Many thanks to our SAR friends for their strong support of C.A.R and CONGRATULATIONS on winning your NSSAR C.A.R. Streamer once again! We treasure our collaboration with SAR as it s just as important for our kids to have the guy perspective as mentors and not just the ladies. Kachina Society continues its fabulous relationship with Tucson Chapter SAR including parade activities with our young C.A.R/SAR members. Hohokam and Hallie Orme Thomas Societies gathered for Wreaths Across America at the National Cemetery in Phoenix where members helped lay wreaths at specific sites requested by wreath donors (fun game of hide and seek!). As members laid all available wreaths (even the 4,000 wreaths donated are not nearly enough to cover each grave site), they continued their efforts by placing hand-held flags at headstones. The flags were donated by Tucson Chapter SAR in support of the C.A.R. National Project fundraiser held by A.S.C.A.R. Hallie Orme Thomas Society is looking forward to helping Saguaro Chapter SAR celebrate their 50 th Anniversary this April! Thank you, gentlemen, for your warm welcome at your fall BOM meeting. It was my honor to be your guest speaker and introduce this year s National and State C.A.R. Projects. You re a very generous audience. I ve come to treasure these opportunities to catch up with now-dear friends in SAR and continue to build friendships. If your chapter is interested in a C.A.R. program, feel free to contact me anytime to make arrangements. We ll connect you with the C.A.R. society closest to you. For more information about C.A.R, contact Lezlee Alexander garthandlee@cox.net, Bring out the Tartan February s State Meeting on Feb 15 th in Chandler will be a kilt evening event. If you have a kilt or any kind of tartan, wear it to the meeting. This is not a black-tie event. Please refer to the Calendar at tml for this and other State events. Fife Student Needed Attention! The AZSSAR Color Guard recently had a six hole Bb grenadilla fife donated by a Casa Grande DAR member. It is immediately available to any member for use in learning to play for meetings, parades and other Color Guard activities. Please contact Bill Aurand for details. State Genealogist Needed Our State Society Genealogist, Paul H. Duffey, is looking for someone to train, to take over his Officers position. If you are interested, please contact Paul, and also let George Lipphardt know. paulhduffey@msn.com Volunteer Be a Hero Assistant Webmaster Needed Your society is looking for a techknowledgeable person that would like to be our assistant webmaster to Bob Vint. Bob is doing an exceptional job, but there is always a chance due to vacations, illness, etc. where Bob may not be available, and we need to keep 2

3 our website operating. We could really use someone as a backup plan, for just those emergencies/situations. You will need to have a computer, and some working knowledge of the technical side of websites. Who knows, this position just might move you up to the position of Webmaster, sometime in the future? Being retired and having more free time would also be a benefit. George has been the un-official assistant webmaster for awhile, but his tech skills are very limited (He doesn t even own a smart phone). He just tries to help Bob keep the in-bound stuff organized for him. Please contact Bob Vint via if you want to volunteer or if you have any questions. If we have more than one volunteer; that would even be better. RJVint@cox.net An outstanding opportunity to help preserve Revolutionary War battlefields By David A. Swanson, President, BMG Chapter Most of us in the various Civil War groups (mine is the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) have all heard of and supported the outstanding work that the Civil War Trust has done since 1987 in acquiring and preserving over 40,000 acres of Civil War battlefields. The trust works only with willing partners, either through easements or outright purchase of the land. Funding comes from the National Park Service, state governments, individual donors and members. On Veterans Day 2014 the Trust enlarged its mission and will now also preserve Revolutionary War and War of 1812 battlefields. This new initiative dubbed Campaign 1776 is the first ever national initiative to protect and interpret the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. This campaign had its origins when the Trust was approached by the National Park Service (NPS) since nobody else could or would do it. In accepting this challenge now, the Trust has the benefit of tools never before available to preservationists.... For example the NPS and the Trust are partnering to undertake an unprecedented GPS mapping study of Revolutionary War battlefields. Moreover, the American Battlefield Protection Program s report on the status of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields, modeled on the landmark study of the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission, provides a prioritized roadmap for preservation of these battlegrounds. The first preservation project of the new national initiative is a fundraising campaign to save 4.6 historic acres on the Princeton Battlefield. The January 3, 1777, engagement was General George Washington s first victory over British Regulars in the field, and a turning point in the war. In this effort, the Trust is working in partnership with the State of New Jersey, local governments and the Princeton Battlefield Society. It will mark the first addition to Princeton Battlefield State Park since I cannot overly stress the importance of Campaign of 1776 in the effort to preserve and interpret Revolutionary War battlefields. Some of the purposes of the NSSAR are... patriotic, historical, and educational... This program backs what we, as an organization, stand for and is something that should be supported on all levels. The Barry M. Goldwater Chapter is supporting this cause (as are individual Compatriots). For more information on the campaign and how you can support it (all proceeds go directly to this campaign) go to: AZSSAR Color Guard participates in Casa Grande Vets Day Parade On a sunny, Saturday morning, November 8th, 2014 the Arizona Society, Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard participated in the annual Casa Grande Veterans Day Parade. Color Guard participants were: Bill Aurand, Dr. Rudy Byrd, Jerry Davis, Lance Dickinson, Chuck Howey, Gerry Lawford, George Lipphardt, John Lyons, Steve Miller, Al Niemeyer and winter visitor Mike Tubbs. Representing the ladies for the Society was Marcia Aurand who marched with the Daughters of the American Revolution contingent. Submitted by:albert Niemeyer AZSSAR Color Guard (AZSSAR Banner Carriers Niemeyer & Lyons followed by the rest of the Color Guard.) (Bill Aurand and MaryLee Matthias, who donated a fife to the AZ color guard at the parade) The Origin of the Color Guard You are all aware that SAR uses Color Guards at many different functions. We thought that you would like to know the history of this honorable unit. Today, Color Guards are ceremonial, but as in many of our traditions, its origins were in practical military necessity. The following is a brief, but concise, history of the origins of Color Guards. During the Revolutionary War, flags, referred to as the colors were of extreme military importance. Placed in the center, the line of battle was formed around them. Through the din and smoke of battle the troops could easily see where they were expected to be. If the colors advanced they too 3

4 advanced. If the colors retired, they too retired. As the battle raged and causalities mounted, the line contracted toward the colors. Thusly, the outcome of any given battle was dependent on the handling of the regimental or brigade colors. The importance of the colors was so significant that before a battle, a ceremony called the trooping of the colors was conducted. The regiment or brigade colors were paraded before the men so that it was certain each man would easily recognize his colors on the field of battle. Capturing the enemy s colors was a sure way to gain a victory. Without their colors a unit had nothing to rally around. To prevent this, a group of the most valiant men of the regiment were selected to protect the colors and color bearer. These men comprised the Color s Guard, a posting of great honor then, and it is a position of honor now. *Information obtained from the National Society Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard Committee. NEWS FROM THECHAPTERS Barry M Goldwater Chapter The Barry M. Goldwater Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution was chartered on November 16, 2002, and currently serves those Compatriots living in North Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, Carefree, and Fountain Hills, AZ. The Barry M. Goldwater Chapter gets its Charter! By David Swanson, Chapter President and Historian Our Chapter was chartered on November 16, 2002, but where is the actual physical charter? The piece of paper that says we were born on this date. Well, apparently it was lost in the dust and swirls and ebbs and flows of our Chapter s ancient past. It is kind of like not being able to find your birth certificate how do you know that you were even born? (Huh?) Several months ago we obtained a very nice charter from the NSSAR (which was unveiled at our November 2014 meeting) but the signature lines for AZSSAR president and secretary/treasurer were blank. Just like a birth certificate, it would be nice to have the signature of the doctor who delivered you on it. Well, it just so happens that the doctor in this case was the 2002 AZSSAR state president, and current BMG Compatriot, J. Michael Jones who also knew the whereabouts of the past state secretary/treasurer Thomas Jacks. So with their signatures officially affixed to our charter we can all breathe a sigh of relief! (The New BMG Chapter Charter) Christmas Social On December 18 the Barry M. Goldwater SAR Chapter and the Paradise Valley DAR Chapter held a social event. No business just socializing. 39 people were in attendance. We held a raffle for twelve. Proceeds from the raffle were equally divided ($90 each) to the chapters, plus a $30 bonus to waitresses Phoebe & Jana. Thanks to everyone. (A trio of revelers at the Social) In Memoriam Barry M. Goldwater Compatriot (and life member of the NSSAR) Richard Conde Withers 83, of Carefree, Arizona passed away on October 18, He was interred at the National Memorial Cemetery in Phoenix on November 10, His patriot was John Martin. We currently serve all of Southern Arizona Color Guard at Wreaths Across America Ceremony During heavy skies that alternated between a drizzle and a moderate rain, the Tucson Chapter Color Guard presented the Colors and later fired a flintlock salute to the honored dead at the Wreaths across America Ceremony in Evergreen Cemetery. Several speakers were featured in the Saturday Morning Ceremony as the guard stood at ease in the rain. The Guard retired the colors as the ceremony was dismissed with visitors fanning out and placing ceremonial wreaths on veteran s graves though out the cemetery. Everyone attending felt it was a very satisfying, albeit very wet, morning. Photo by Sandy Lawford. Article by Al Niemeyer. Tucson Chapter Gives Presentations at Wilson School On 18 December 2014 Tucson SAR color guard members Rudy Byrd and Jim and Theresa Williamson gave back to back presentations to Wilson School second graders, reaching approximately 150 children and five teachers. Dr. Byrd's and Theresa's lectures were well received, including many surprisingly cogent questions from the audience, especially the sequence when Dr. Byrd, cleverly playing the part of a canon fires a round shot through Molly Pitcher's skirt. Meanwhile, Jim answered countless questions about the wondrous and mysterious contents of his rifleman's pouch. The crowning glory of the afternoon was Dr. Byrd firing his musket. As can be seen, all teachers took a try at it, one twice, much to the wonderment and delight of the children. Article written by Jim Williamson. (Rudy Byrd with 2 nd graders at Wilson Elementary School) AZSSAR Public Service Announcement Reminder We have a wonderful Public Service Announcement video on our Home Page, State Society Website, in case you have not seen it.
