2 Cross Talk Longform Newsletter for November 2018 Back-Issues Available at A Special Message from the Pastor s Desk O give thanks to the Lord for He is good; his steadfast love endures forever! (Psalm 118:1, 29) I have many fond memories of Thanksgiving. Well, not all of them, I must admit. My memories of Thanksgiving grow fonder as I grow older. When I was very little, I was not thrilled with Thanksgiving. After all, there were no presents to unwrap, no baskets to find, no fireworks to see, and no candy to eat. (By this time, all of the Halloween candy was long gone.) I wondered which was worse: the food ( Did I really have to eat the candied yams? The answer, of course, was yes. Aunt Fran made them and we wouldn t want to hurt her feelings, now, would we?) or the Thanksgiving program at school (Did I really have to be the turkey? The answer, of course, was yes. I was the only kid in class that resembled a butterball, except for Everett, who was out sick. Lucky him!) Even in college, I had a slight grievance against Thanksgiving. The holiday always came at an inconvenient time, right when I was studying hard for finals. It wasn t that I didn t want to come home, it was just that I brought every text book and library book home with me. And unfortunately, later on when Charlotte and I were at Seminary and came home to my Mom s house, that trend continued. Yet, despite some of these discomforts, Thanksgiving had the sense of coming home for me. In grade school, I enjoyed getting together with my cousins whom I had not seen in a long time. I enjoyed the time with my favorite aunt and uncle. (And in spite of her candied yams, Aunt Fran was my favorite aunt on my mother s side of the family.) Thanksgivings at Uncle Paul and Aunt Fran s are treasured memories as I was surrounded in love by so many family members. As I grew older, after I was married, I loved the family get-togethers with Charlotte s family in Texas. Her family immediately made me feel a part of their family, one of their own. They loved me unconditionally. I cherished those wonderful, joyful, and thankful times as about 40 of us would gather together as a big family in November each year. And it was in these family relationships, not the turkeys, not the pilgrims, not the football games, nor the parades, not the family poker games, that have given a special meaning to Thanksgiving for me. This family relationship is important in our relationship with God. Through baptism, we become children of God and inheritors of the kingdom. Jesus taught us to pray Our Father. We are given grace to call God, our Father, our loving parent, our Daddy (which is a good translation for Abba). The word Our is not used in the sense of the possessive. Rather, we use the word our to embrace the fact that this is a corporate prayer, meant to be prayed, not alone, but with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ, as a family together giving honor to our Father. This day of Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks to our loving, gracious, heavenly Father. Not in the sense of Do I have to? (as in Do I have to eat the candied yams? ), but in the sense of wanting to and encouraging others to do so. We give thanks to God, like the psalmist, simply because God indeed is good and His steadfast love endures forever. We give thanks to God simply because God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from punishment. We see this steadfast love through the cross of Christ, in words from the same psalm (118) which was quoted above, The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. (Psalm 118:22-23) During this month of thanksgiving, let us come home to Our Father and remember to say thank you for his steadfast love and grace, by dropping in on Our Father s house each Sunday to tell Our Father that we love Him and thank Him for all of His blessings. Thanksgiving and Sundays are indeed good days for us to say thanks to God. After all, This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24). Yours in Christ, Pastor Scott
