1 Beth Israel Congregation s April 2014/5774 BULLETIN Rabbi s Message Save the Date! General Service Schedule Friday 7:30pm; Saturday 10:00am The Haggadah speaks to us today with insight and inspiration as it presents its thoughts on human liberation and redemption. One of the most compelling lines of the Haggadah states, In every generation, one must see himself or herself as personally redeemed from Egypt. Egyptian bondage is not a one-time historical event in the distant past. It is an eternal process as each and every generation sees the development of a new Pharaoh in its own time. We must be eternally vigilant to the challenges of our contemporary situation while we acknowledge our gratitude for the gift of freedom we enjoy. Unfortunately at this present juncture, an isolationist spirit has currently infused itself in our country. This spirit derives from the lengthy American operations in Iraq and Afghanistan which have produced inconclusive results. In response to these incursions, the American people have grown weary of international involvements. President Obama has wanted his second term to reflect his State of the Union initiatives in health care, immigration reform, and income inequality. However, the world has marched on with the continued slaughter of innocent Syrians through the tyranny of the Assad regime and the annexation of Crimea by Vladimir Putin of Russia. Iran believes that it has been the winner in its negotiations with the West as the economic sanctions against it have been weakened. The Haggadah echoes the sentiment expressed in the writing of several nineteenth century American thinkers such as Frederick Douglass, James Buchanan, and William Henry Harrison. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. We must continue to be vigilant. The Haggadah shares the narrative of the new Pharaoh in Egypt who did not remember Joseph s astute interventions which spared the Egyptians from the seven year drought. The new Pharaoh perceived the Israelites as a threat due to their prosperity. The welcomed Israelites were now perceived as a threat to Egyptian society. According to the Torah, the simple request of Moses to celebrate a three day festival was denied. The Torah narrative reflects the historical truth that often events play themselves out in a different direction than we had thought or desired. Join us on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 7:00pm for our Yom HaShoa Holocaust Memorial Service. This year s theme is Confronting the Holocaust, American Responses. Members of Salisbury s religious and civic communities will be present to share this evening of reflection with us. Refreshments will be served following the program.
2 Rabbi s Message, Continued Initially, the Israelites were welcomed into Egypt. The twelve sons of Jacob had settled there. Generations later, the Pharaoh saw themselves as undesirable aliens. In our contemporary world, Russia was recently seen as a partner of the West in pursuing peace in the twenty-first century. The annexation of Crimea has turned this understanding on its head. Many analysts thought that Assad, the ruthless dictator of Syria would be deposed like other Arab despots in the so-called Arab Spring. Sadly, after some 150,000 deaths, the Syrian Civil War rages on. As the Haggadah instructs us, the Egyptian narrative of the struggle for human liberation and dignity continues in every generation and we must be a part of it. We must never become indifferent to the cause of human freedom this is the eternal message of Passover. Please join us at Beth Israel as we celebrate the message of Passover at our Community Seder on the Second Night of Passover, April 15 th at 6:00 p.m. We are proud that our fabulous chefs, Todd Berman and Chris Parypa will be creating a memorable culinary experience for the Passover meal. Let us celebrate our freedom as Jews here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland as we invoke the call to liberty for the oppressed throughout the world. --Rabbi Bienstock From our President Thanks to Shari and Sara for organizing a great Purim Carnival. It was a lot of fun for all ages. Thanks also to Chris Parypa, and his team of helpers, for the delicious Shabbat Across America dinner. We had a great turn-out. It was a very nice evening. We have many events in April so stay tuned for the Defiant Requiem film on the 6 th, the Passover Seder on the n 15 th and the Holocaust Service on the 27 th. If you would like to help with any of the Beth Israel events, or donate food or decorations, just let us know. The open board meeting is scheduled for May 6 th, so put it on your calendar and be thinking about whether you would like to serve on the Board of Governors, or chair an event next year. Hope everyone will have a Happy Passover. Enjoy the spring weather. Hope to see you at services and events this month! Stop in and look at the beautifully renovated Barry Berger room. Thanks to Al Berger and his family for their very generous gift! Thanks also to Todd, Shari and Sara for their hard work. On Sunday, April 6 th at 2:30pm the incredible documentary Defiant Requiem will be presented at the Perdue Business School Auditorium on the campus of Salisbury University, in conjunction with the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council, The Salisbury Film Society and Beth Israel Congregation. The contemporary conductor, Murray Sidlin, took ten years and made the documentary. We are privileged not only to show the film, but to have Maestro Sidlin come to Salisbury and moderate the discussion after the film. We encourage you to attend the film showing, and support the Salisbury Film Society, as well. The tickets are $9 for non-swac members, $8 for SWAC members and $4 for students. BIRS Students Sadie Hall and Gabe Berman learned how to wrap tefillin and do proper prayers in a recent Hebrew School class.
