1 Beth Israel Congregation s BULLETIN November 2012/5773 FROM THE DESK OF RABBI BIENSTOCK Beth Israel Congregation 600 Camden Avenue Salisbury, MD Phone Fax Veterans Day For many years, Beth Israel Congregation has honored its veterans on the Shabbat closest to Veterans Day. This year, we will hold our Veterans Shabbat on Friday, November 9 th and Saturday, November 10 th. This event was particularly meaningful to Litman Litow, of blessed memory, no doubt because of his own career in the Polish Jewish Underground and the role of American soldiers in liberating the death and concentrating camps during World War Two. Of course, Veterans Day was created in the aftermath of World War I when it was originally called Armistice Day in honor of the end of conflict. Throughout American history, there has been a tension between the idealized portrait of the veteran as opposed to the reality of the challenges and issues veterans have confronted. In fact, it was in the aftermath of World War One, that the United States began to establish programs to care for veterans in the 1920s and 1930s. Ironically, the overwhelming majority of enlisted Americans in World War One did not participate in combat. It was after World War Two, that policies towards American veterans had a transformative effect on American society. The GI Bill, which provided for higher education benefits for veterans, permitted many returning World War Two veterans to attend college and graduate school. Interestingly, one of the significant beneficiaries of this federal program was Senator George McGovern, who passed away on October 21 at the age of 90. Later in life, Senator McGovern became the Rabbi Arnold Bienstock salisrab@verizon.net Jackie Middleton, Secretary bicsecretary@verizon.net Shabbat Services: Friday, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 a.m. leading American opponent of American military involvement in Vietnam. The GI Bill allowed many veterans access to educational and professional achievement they would not have otherwise achieved. The Vietnam War and its aftermath have made many Americans think about the adaptation of veterans to civilian society. The veterans of the Vietnam conflict are regarded as the forgotten veterans as the political debate about the war cast a shadow over their treatment. Since the Persian Gulf conflicts and especially since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the treatment of veterans has again become the focus of national attention. The Obama Administration created a blueprint for the Veterans Administration in 2009 which focuses upon the economic, medical, and psychological needs of the veterans of recent conflicts. Recently, the challenges, both physical and psychological, of returning veterans have achieved much greater attention in the American media particularly a great deal of discussion about PTSD posttraumatic stress disorder and its major impact upon the wellbeing of many veterans. Recently, the challenges, both physical and psychological, of returning veterans have achieved much greater attention in the American media particularly a great deal of discussion about PTSD post-traumatic stress disorder and its major impact upon the well-being of many veterans. 2 Continued from page 1 Israel, of course, has always focused on the adaptation of its veterans to civilian society, since the majority of its male population has served in combat. Formerly, the majority of Israelis made their most significant personal and professional contacts through their military service. Military service served the most profound impact on shaping the identity of Israelis. However, as the number of Israelis who serve in the Israeli Army continues to decline, Israel may also begin to see less focus on these issues. The challenge for Israel is to try to incorporate its Arab and Hassidic populations into its military structure. Please join us as we honor and recognize our veterans and at special Oneg Shabbat on Friday evening, November 9 th, and at our Shabbat morning service on Nov. 10 th. Please submit comments, articles and ideas to Jackie Middleton at bicsecretary@verizon.net Please have all materials sent in by the 15th of each month. We want to hear from you. Please feel free to send in your articles and ideas. From the Treasurer: In the past few months, we have made some changes in how we handle the synagogue finances. Rather than out-source our bookkeeping our administrative assistant, Jackie Middleton, is now working closely with me to handle our day-to-day finances. This includes learning a new computer program in order to handle bills, deposits and dues. As can be expected, we are experiencing some growing pains, and appreciate your patience as we improve service to our members. We have also discovered that the current method of dues invoicing is cumbersome and confusing. For example, some members pay on an annual basis and some quarterly; some pay according to the calendar year and some according to the fiscal year. Our goal is to simplify the process to make it more understandable and user-friendly. Accordingly, beginning in January 2013 we will invoice all members once a year for their full annual dues. Thereafter, monthly statements will be sent reminding you of what is owed. Members may pay monthly, quarterly or annually, and payments will be reflected on monthly statements. Occasionally, you will also receive invoices for other charges, such as BIC cards, donations, and the SOS pledge. These will be invoiced once, and added to the monthly statement. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding these changes, please contact Susan J. Land at or sland67@gmail.com. Thank you and may you all have a Happy and Healthy New Year! Would you like to host an Oneg? Contact the office at and reserve your date today! 3

4 Congratulations and Thank you to: Mazel Tov to Rachel White and Benjamin Greenfield on their recent wedding. Best Wishes to Rabbi and Barbara White and Cantor and Mrs. Greenfield on the marriage of their children. Thank you to Todd and Pam Berman, Miriam White, Natasha Shangold and Shari Silbert for the elegant Pizza in the Hut Sukkot Celebration. Honoring Our Jewish War Veterans: Please join us on November 9-10, for a special Oneg Shabbat and Kiddush luncheon to honor our Jewish War Veterans, past and present. As the national Veterans Day approaches, let's take this time to remember the sacrifices that all our brave veterans--and especially our Jewish Veterans--have made in serving their country and helping to preserve our freedom. UPCOMING EVENTS Let's Get together at SU and Celebrate Chanukah Meet fellow members of Beth Israel at the Commons Dining Hall at Salisbury University on Tuesday, December 11th for a special Chanukah Dinner at 5:45pm (this is in addition to and SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED with our Shul's Chanukah Dinner). Following dinner, we can all walk together and attend an Israeli concert held at the University. Mika Karni & Kol Dodi Tuesday, December 11 at Holloway Hall Auditorium, Salisbury University, 7pm Karni, a gifted original voice in the Israel music scene, presents her newest project Kol Dodi. This musical ensemble of Israeli Moroccan, Yemenite and Ethiopian musicians and singers brings to the stage the first-ever musical version of one of the world's most beautiful love songs "Shir Ha-Shirim.". This project is an enchanting new musical perspective of the original Biblical psalms, "Shir Ha'Shirim", combined with originally composed melodies. Sponsored by World Artist Experiences and the Embassy of Israel to the United States. Happy Birthday to: Nov. 2--Jacob Berman Nov. 30--Alex Paciga 4

5 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The holiday of Thanksgiving is approaching just as we have concluded Sukkot, which like Thanksgiving, is a celebration of the harvest. In between the two holidays, we have an election. Whatever the outcome of the election, we can all be thankful that we live in a country that allows us the freedom to vote and make choices and the freedom to express our political beliefs and our religious beliefs without repercussions. Fortunately, most of us have much to be thankful for, but such freedoms are not insignificant. Our Beth Israel family is evidence of this freedom to observe our shared beliefs with kindred spirits. Whether you like to attend services or just want to stay connected with fellow Jews, I hope everyone feels thankful for the warmth and caring of a place like Beth Israel and will share the upcoming events and celebrations together. I heard great reports of our Pizza in the Sukkah Shabbat event. While you enjoyed pizza in Salisbury, we were attending parents weekend at Penn. The Penn Hillel also enjoyed pizza, and sukkahs had been constructed all around the campus by many student groups. Still, I missed being at our celebration at Beth Israel. We will have more fun at our Hanukkah party and dinner which is coming up on December 9 th, so put it on your calendars. We have Veterans services on November 9-10 with good food to be provided by the Jewish War Veterans, and our annual gift wrapping fund raiser at Barnes and Noble on December 23 rd for anyone who wants to help. Our students will be participating in services, so watch your calendars and come and show your support for them and spend time with your Beth Israel family. We want to energize and invigorate our synagogue so that it will always be there for us. If you have ideas for fun events or special services, please share them with us. Sponsor an oneg in honor of a special occasion and share the joy. In this time of giving thanks and celebrating with loved ones, let us all be thankful for the community of Beth Israel and not underestimate its value. Susan Tilghman--Co-President Beth Israel's pets and owners enjoyed a lovely day at the Blessing of the Animals held on Oct. 21, Back row: Jaimi Hall, Nadine Wieder, Andy Karten, Toby Rubin, Rabbi Arnold Bienstock, Jacob Berman, Natasha Shangold and Sadie Hall.
