1 Beth Israel Congregation s November 2015/5776 BULLETIN Rabbi s Message General Service Schedule Friday 7:30pm; Saturday 10:00am The Gift of Giving On Sunday October 25, 2015, Temple Bnai Israel of Easton joined with the local chapters of the NAACP, the Frederick Douglas Society, and the Talbot County Clergy and Laity to present the documentary Rosenwald. The event was held at the Academy Arts Museum. The producer of the documentary, Aviva Kempner, was present at the event. Ms Kemper has achieved critical acclaim for her previous documentaries about Hank Greenberg and Gertrude Berg. The filmmaker has been aptly titled, The Jewish Ken Burns. Rosenwald is a beautiful and insightful portrayal of one of the unsung heroes of American and Jewish philanthropy the CEO of Sears, Julius Rosenwald. His story is a tribute to both American capitalism and the art of giving. Ironically, Julius Rosenwald grew up in a house in Springfield, Illinois in close proximity to where Abraham Lincoln lived. Lincoln surely would have been proud to have known how his values were embodied in Rosenwald s life. Rosenwald, like most German Jews in the United States, started out as a peddler and worked his way up to corporate executive. His genius lay in his ability to transform Sears into the Amazon of its day through the Sears catalogue. The catalogue reached into every small town in America. The film shares the clever gimmick - the Sears catalogue was smaller than that of Montgomery Ward s. In that manner, the Sears catalogue was on top of every kitchen table! Rosenwald s commercial success was beyond his wildest dreams as he became part of Chicago s Jewish society. Rosenwald was inspired by his Rabbi, Emil Hirsch of Sinai Congregation in Chicago to devote the remainder of his life to both Jewish and general and philanthropic causes. He built the Museum of Science and Industry a new type of institution. However, his most beloved cause became the advancement of African-Americans through education. Rosenwald became a close associate with Booker T. Washington and the two planned a program for the education of Southern blacks on a massive scale. Ultimately, some 5,000 Rosenwald schools were established throughout the South that taught one out of every three African-American students. 2 Rabbi s Message, Continued The Rosenwald schools were funded through contributions from Rosenwald, the local white community and the African-American families whose children attended the schools. Rosenwald then continued to create a fellowship program for African-American writers, artists and singers. book will His be fellowships Introduction touched the to lives of almost every creative African-American in the early twentieth century particularly those associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Rosenwald also served as a major benefactor of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The highlight of the Easton event was the presence of several individuals who attended the Rosenwald schools in San Domingo (outside of Mardela Springs) and Easton. These individuals are now retired professionals teachers, doctors, and professors - but their education began decades ago at a Rosenwald School. The schools were closed as a result of the 1954 Supreme Court decision that separate educational facilities for African-Americans were unconstitutional. However, San Domingo School still functions as a community center. The film asserts that Rosenwald s life embodied the values of tsedaka and tikkun olam. The businessman learned these values from his rabbi, Emil Hirsch, and implemented them in his life. The millions of individuals and their descendants who were benefactors of Rosenwald s dream of African-American education are a testimony to his philanthropy. The word philanthropy literally means love of humanity which certainly was the purpose for which Rosenwald lived. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a Happy Thanksgiving as we recall what we are truly thankful for in our country as Americans and as Jews. --Rabbi Bienstock Hanukkah Dinner with music provided By Cantor Stephanie Shore When: December 6, 2015at 6:00pm Menu: Roasted Chicken Latkes Applesauce Pasta Dessert Cost: $8 Children under 5 $12 members, SU Students & children over 5 $15 nonmembers RSVP: By December 2nd to Jackie at bicsecretary@verizon.net or From the President: I am probably not the first person to realize this, but life just seems to get faster and faster. It was just yesterday that my friends and I would hang out and dream about being 15 years old so we could stay up late enough to see Saturday Night Live or this new thing called MTV, where you could see music videos. The days and weeks seemed to slowly creep by with sports, Boy Scouts, and all the other activities. The school days seemed especially slow and painful. Being the youngest child, it seemed so long before I could actually start driving on my own. The freedom of a bike or car was what I really searched out. Before too long my life started speeding up, from senior year of high school, college and the start of my family. Pam and I have spent the past twentyfour years of our lives moving around the east coast following new adventures and building our own family. When we finally had kids, life hit high speed. It seems like just yesterday I was reading to my boys each night before bed. I wanted to experience everyday with them, so meal time was very important. We would spend weekends either at soccer practice or doing projects on the house. My boys are now 17 and 14 years old. They have grown taller, smarter, and much faster than I am in just the past few years. When did all this happen? My boys will hopefully be leaving for bigger and better things in the next few years and they need me less everyday (except for money). They are good kids that make mistakes but are really better than average. I still enjoy spending time with them and I am always in awe of the things that they have accomplished. What s our secret? Turn off the electronics for a day. I know it s painful but you will be amazed at how life slows down. Take the kids to a ball game, play a board game, go on a hike. I still remember going to the beach for the whole day with my Mom or going on hikes with my Dad. All of my favorite memories with my wife and family are doing activities. Some of these activities were big, like when the boys and I hiked 30 miles together on the Appalachian Trail and when we went to Israel as a family. Other special memories were when we accomplished simple activities like installing hardwood floors and learning a new recipe. Nothing about watching cartoons, as a kid, really stood out to me, that time just existed. I really think that we miss so much time with electronic attractions that do not create but, just occupy time. Spend time with friends, take time out of your life and come to Shabbat services. We are coming into the time of year that we spend with our families. Create memories with activities and slow down the clock when you can. --Todd Berman
