1 Beth Israel Congregation s Nov. 2017/5778 BULLETIN Rabbi s Message General Service Schedule Friday 7:00pm; Saturday 10:00am November Events Nov. 12@ 10am Book discussion The Centennial of the Balfour Declaration November 2, 2017 marked the centennial of the Balfour Declaration in which England stated that it looked favorably upon the establishment of a Jewish homeland in the British Mandate of Palestine. Celebrations acknowledging this significant date have occurred in both Israel and in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister May of the United Kingdom has noted the centennial as one of the great humanitarian gestures on the part of Great Britain. She reaffirmed the appropriateness of the declaration despite voices in England and the Arab world declaring otherwise. The declaration reflected the efforts of Chaim Weitzmann, who had aided the British Government in its victory in World War I, in moving British diplomacy. The British Government was recognizing the actual facts on the ground as Jews continued to move into the British Mandate. Many of the kibbutzim had been established in the Galilee. Tel Aviv was a small, but booming Jewish metropolis. Religious Jews were returning to Jerusalem and the New City of the Jerusalem outside the historic walls had many Jewish neighborhoods. The Balfour Declaration gave the Jewish community in the British Mandate of Palestine a glimmer of hope that its aspirations were recognized by the international community. Sadly, the British Mandate was a small gesture in the appropriate direction. However, later British policy turned against Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. It should be noted that 80 percent of the British Mandate was given to the Hashemite Dynasty, the current monarchy of Jordan. Thus, eighty percent was utilized to create a new Arab state, the country of Jordan. England, throughout the thirties and forties, curtailed Jewish immigration to the British Mandate of Palestine. This era was one of the darkest periods in Jewish history. Hitler had made his meteoric rise to power in Germany. Hitler had declared his initial aim -continued on page 2 Shabbat Candle Lighting Times November 3 5:42 November 10 4:36 November 17 4:30 November 24 4:26 The Beth Israel Book Club will meet on Sunday, November 12 at 10:00am. We will be discussing Biography of Rabbi Kuk by Yehuda Mirsky. Everyone is welcome to attend.
2 Rabbi s Message, Continued of expelling the half million Jews of Germany from the country. The place where Jews desired to resettle our ancient homeland was prohibited by British authorities. Britain continued this policy even in the aftermath of the Holocaust. The famous novel and later film, Exodus captures the horrific policy of the British government at this time. Ultimately, when the United Nations agreed to the partition of Palestine into a Jewish. and Arab state, Israel was given a tiny sliver of the original British mandate. The Jewish homeland was to be a tiny strip of land along the Mediterranean coast. However, the leadership of the 600,000 Jews living in the mandate was ecstatic with the decision. On the on other hand, the Arab world rejected the partition of Palestine no matter how small the Jewish entity was to be. As Jews and their friends throughout the world celebrate the centennial of the Balfour Declaration, we can say, The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Palestinian Authority has protested the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. The erroneous charge is that Britain had absolutely no right to assert a humanitarian gesture towards the Jewish community living in the Mandate. Prior to the British Mandate, Palestine had been a backwater province of the Ottoman Turkish Empire with Jewish, Arab and other populations. Once again, the opposition to the centennial demonstrates that the Arab world has a problem with the very existence of Israel. The opposition derives from the inability to accept the Jewish people as an indigenous people of the Middle East despite all the DNA research to prove that Jews are indeed a Middle Eastern people. The centennial of the Balfour Declaration, along with the United Nations recognition of Israel in 1948, are two of the most sacred events in world history. Through these events, the international community recognized the right of the Jewish people to live in freedom in our historic homeland. We acknowledge the significance of the Balfour Declaration which was an initial step in the establishment of the State of Israel. From the vision of a Jewish homeland, Israel has now become the homeland for six million Jews and its two million other citizens. Lord Balfour would be proud. --Rabbi Bienstock Member to Member Thank you to Steve & Laurie Schwalb for coordinating the SOS pledge cards.
