1 HAKAFA WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS WEEK OF FEBRUARY 28, 2018 CELEBRATE PURIM WITH HAKAFA TONIGHT! Wednesday, February 28, 6:30 PM Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka) Purim begins this evening, February 28, at sundown. Please join us for a fun evening as we read from the Megilla and nosh some hamentashen! We ve heard it from the Grammys, through the grapevine, leaving on a jet plane, in a yellow submarine, amidst the sounds of silence, wishing upon a star, with all our heart and soul, under a disco ball, on the television, through the painful 80's, with Glee, on Broadway, and more. This year? Ready, set, action! Stay after the Megilla reading and dare to be judged by Haman and Esther as you sing your favorite karaoke tunes. Who will become this year s Shushan Idol? There will be hamentashen for everyone and free prizes for anyone wearing a costume! NO Wednesday Afternoon Torah Study Please note that because Rabbi Elder is busy preparing for our Purim Celebration this evening, there will be NO Wednesday Afternoon Torah Study this week. We will resume next Wednesday, March 7. Shabbat Service Friday, March 2, 7:30 PM Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka) Please join us for our weekly Shabbat Service and Oneg. Sunday Morning Adult Educational Programming Sunday, February 25, 10:35 AM to 12:00 NOON Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road, Glencoe) Study in Community Room 1: Sabbatai Sevi: The Viral Messiah (Part I) with David Rieser Hakafa member, David Rieser, will teach the first of two sessions on Sabbatai Sevi: The Viral Messiah. In 1665, Rabbi Nathan of Gaza announced to the Jewish world that he had determined that Sabbatai Sevi, was the Messiah sent to redeem them. The news spread with incredible speed and within three months, Jews throughout Europe and the Middle East prepared for a Messianic Age by halting their business, selling their possessions and making plans to move to the Holy Land. The Ottoman rulers jailed Sabbatai and when that did not calm the excitement offered him the choice between converting to Islam and death. What happened next will shock you! Sabbatai's story is a fascinating and remarkably modern mix of faith and frenzy that spread rapidly along existing communication lines but mirrors movements in the internet age. We will discuss the historical setting, Sabbtai's rise, the Jewish world's excited reaction, what happened after he made his choice and how it impacts Jewish life today. David Rieser is a lawyer by profession and while he was always a history buff, his B'nai Mitzvah at Hakafa ten years ago sparked an apparently insatiable interest in Jewish history. He made the mistake of telling Rabbi Elder about some of his reading so this is now his ninth adult education discussion. Midrash Class Tuesday, March 6, 9:00-10:00 AM North Shore United Methodist Church (213 Hazel Avenue, Glencoe) Join us to study midrash with Rabbi Elder. Midrash is the creative, interpretative process of the rabbis over generations. 6 One Congregation, One Book Hakafa s book group will meet on Sunday, April 29 at 10:35 AM at the Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road) to discuss The Secret Book of Kings by Yochi Brandes. This novel takes textual sources about the experiences of David and Solomon and spins a story about the foundation of the Kingdom of Israel. Ms. Brandes, one of Israel s best-selling authors, combined her skills as a novelist with her training in academic Jewish scholarship to create a novel that raises the question of what untold stories there may be when the available historical sources were written by the victors. Get your copy of the book now so that you can join the discussion on April 29 th! Getting to Know the Refugees We Help Support Over the last 2 years, Hakafa has helped close to 40 refugees! It is a lot to keep track of, so we are continuing to introduce/re-introduce you to some of our refugees. Henok, Selam and their daughter, Ephrata, are our "oldest" family in Chicago. They have now been here 16 months. They are originally from Eritrea which is next to Ethiopia. They fled several years ago and lived for a few years in Malta where they both worked in a hotel and learned some English. Henok arrived speaking relatively fluent English. He is an incredibly engaging man, and he and Selam immediately charmed what Henok called "their Hakafa family." When they arrived, Selam was pregnant with their first child, and in March of last year they welcomed their daughter, Ephrata (who is a U.S. citizen). In addition to Ephrata's first birthday this week, Henok is coming up on a year working at the Four Seasons Hotel. Selam just started working at the Palmer House a week ago. Hakafa volunteers - Sara and Mitch Hoffman, Lisa Rosenberg, Anita Goldberg, Gerri and Steve Keen, and Becca and Debbie Charen - have helped the family with everything from doctors appointments, preparing for the baby's birth, shopping for the baptism celebration, and more recently, locating child care and a new apartment. It has been a joy to get to know this family. Sunday Bagel Volunteers Needed Volunteers are needed to help with bagels on almost all of the remaining Sunday mornings this school year. Volunteers spend 45 minutes (11:30 AM-12:15 PM) slicing bagels, putting them on platters, setting out cream cheese, cleaning up, and putting supplies away. If you can help out, please sign up at or contact Jennifer Braun (jenniferwbraun1@icloud.com or ). Thank you! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Volunteers are needed this year to host Friday Evening Onegs, to host a Shabbat-in-the-Home potluck dinner, to volunteer at A Just Harvest, to help with Sunday Morning Bagels, and to provide Coffee/Snacks for the Adults on Sunday mornings. It s easy to sign up to help out for any of these volunteer opportunities! Go to this link, scroll through the different options, and click on the links to sign up: If you would like to go directly to a specific volunteer opportunity, follow these links: Friday Evening Onegs: A Just Harvest: Sunday Morning Bagels:

7 Sunday Coffee/Snacks for Adults: Shabbat-in-the-Home 4/20/18: Membership Adding to our Circle We are somewhat unique among religious organizations in that we don t advertise per se. However, we are always looking for a few new members who will be a good fit for our congregation. We could use some help with what to say about Hakafa and how to reach out - who better to turn to than current members? Please contact Sylvia Dresser (sylviadresser@gmail.com or ) with your ideas for the following: 1. What are the top 3 things you love about Hakafa? 2. What great ideas do you have on growing registration in our Religious School? REAL ISRAEL Here s an interesting story from the Jerusalem Post. As you probably know, Israel has been making the desert bloom by developing and applying innovative and sustainable tech-based solutions for farmers and farming. Recently Israel has had to deal with a serious problem, finding a way to eradicate the Mediterranean fruit fly, one of the world s most destructive fruit pests, and to make the extermination as environmentally friendly and chemical free as possible. The fly was attacking orchards and agricultural farmland surrounding Gaza. So, what plan did the Israeli scientists settle on? According to the Post, Israel has been scattering 33 million flies every week onto the orchards from airplanes as part of a unique Agriculture Ministry project. The planes take off with millions of male flies at the peak of their sexual maturity and drop them onto fields in an effort to naturally expel the pests. The male flies, which are sterile, mate with the female flies which were infesting the crops. Let nature do the work. According to estimates, the project prevents the use of some 33,000 liters of chemical pesticides that farmers would otherwise have to spray on land near cities and people in order to carry out the pest control artificially. -Bob Rifkin Not your ordinary fruit flies Contact Information for Hakafa: Mailing Address: P.O.
