1 Congregation Hakafa Newsletter November 2013 Cheshvan/Kislev 5774 BRUCE ELDER, RABBI ROBERT J. MARX, RABBI EMERITUS Thanksgivukkabat By now, you ve heard of Thanksgivukkah (or Chanksgiving), the strange convergence of Thanksgiving and the first night of Chanukkah that will happen this year and won t occur again until at least the year 81,056 (84,817 on the Jewish calendar). But have you ever heard of Thanksgivukkabat? Thanksgivukkabat is the shabbat of Chanukkah that falls on the day after Thanksgiving. Experience this once-in-a-lifetime event with Hakafa! Join us on Friday, November 29 at 5:00 p.m. at the Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka) for a wonderful Thanksgivukkabat celebration! The evening will begin with latke and chocolate hors d'oeuvre. We will then hold a short Shabbat service bring your chanukiyot and candles so that we can brighten the room with beautiful, Chanukah lights. A special turkey menorah will be making its debut! Don t worry this year about what to do with all the extra food from your family turkey dinner. Our evening will continue with a Thanksgiving leftovers potluck. Add your dishes to everyone else s an eclectic feast of delectable proportions! We will eat only what we all bring, so be sure to bring something. Part of dinner will include a Thanksgivukkabat cook-off. Whoever makes the best, most interesting dish that includes elements of Thanksgiving and Chanukkah will win $100 to the charity of your choice! Added weight will be given to those who include elements of Shabbat into their dishes. We will conclude the evening with sufgoniyot (stuffing-filled donuts) and games of trivia, dreidel, and more. This will be a unique evening for a unique occasion and will be fun for all ages - don t miss out!! + + =?
2 HANUKKAH The Hanukkah Menorah (or Chanukiah in Hebrew) is a candlestick that holds nine candles, specifically for Hanukkah. Eight of the candles each represent one of the eight days of Hanukkah. The ninth candle is raised above the others and is called the Shamash, meaning helper-candle. It is used to light all the other candles. If possible, candles should be lit immediately after sunset and should be allowed to burn completely. One family member may light the candles on behalf of the whole family, but it is fun to have each family member light his/her own Chanukiah. The first candle is lit (using the shamash) on the first night. On the next night, two candles are lit, and one more added each night up through the eighth night. The candles are placed in the Chanukiah from right to left (facing you); but, when lighting them, first kindle the new candle added that evening (using the shamash) and then proceed from left to right. On the first night, all three of the blessings below are said. On all other nights, only the first two blessings are recited. One of our challenges is how to plan, capture, and utilize the energy, wisdom, and experience of our congregants as they become "elders" as well as supporting the interests of this group as an integral part of our community. What role does, or should, the synagogue play in these endeavors? This is not done in a short conversation, but one that will take place over time, and potentially have many different outcomes. Please join us at our first meeting on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Betsy Hersher (1444 Stratford Road, Deerfield). All are welcome - retirees, soon to be retirees, emply nesters, and those interested in taking advantage of what our "elders" have to offer. 6 5 The Circle November 2013 November Sunday Morning Adult Programming 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road, Glencoe) November 3: INCOGNITO: A ONE-MAN PLAY: Please join us for a special presentation by writer/performer Michael Fosberg of his one-man show, Incognito. Mr. Fosberg began a personal search for his biological father at age 34 that turned up a whole lot more. Armed with only the name of his father and the knowledge that he lived in the Detroit area two decades earlier, Fosberg makes a miraculous call which sets in motion a series of discoveries of family -- of secrets and lies, confrontation and reconciliation. Incognito balances humor and emotion as it deals with race, prejudice, and life s difficult choices. More information about the play can be gathered from his website at November 10: Dr. David Shyovitz, Assistant Professor of History at Northwestern University will teach this first of four sessions on the intellectual and cultural history of the Jews of medieval and early modern Europe. Adult study is held in Community Room 1 at the Takiff Center. Dr. Shyovitz holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. His interests include German Pietism (Hasidut Ashkenaz), the history of "nature" and "the body," the history of law, and Jewish-Christian relations. His current book project examines medieval Jewish understandings of the natural world, and the ways in which Jewish and Christian thinkers have distinguished "nature" from "the supernatural." From , he was a fellow at the Center for Jewish Law at the Cardozo School of Law in New York. He has also held fellowships from the Wexner Foundation, the Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies, and the ATID Foundation in Jerusalem. Jewish Culture: Yoga is back by popular demand! This year, our six sessions will be taught by Karen Citow and Sharyn Galindo, Hakafa members who are certified instructors and who own or have owned successful yoga studios on the North Shore. All adults are invited to bring your own yoga mat and meet us in the Takiff Center Community Hall for this year's first session! November 17: Adult Study: Dr. David Shyovitz will teach the second of four sessions on the intellectual and cultural history of the Jews of medieval and early modern Europe. Jewish Culture: Israeli Dancing with Penny Brichta: Penny is Chicago s Israeli dancing maven. She has taught dancing at numerous congregations and has been with the Northwestern Israeli Dance group for more than twenty years. Penny teaches both traditional and modern Israeli dance and gives both an education and a workout. Join us in the Takiff Center Community Hall for fun and a great workout. November 24: Adult Study: Dr. David Shyovitz will teach the third of four sessions on the intellectual and cultural history of the Jews of medieval and early modern Europe. Jewish Culture: Cooking with Linda Harth: Learn to make latkes with Linda just in time for Hanukkah! Linda has taught Jewish cooking to a plethora of groups over many decades and will share new information, tricks, and recipes. Because the Takiff Center kitchen is small and we need to know how much of each ingredient to purchase, you must RSVP for this class by November 17. To RSVP, please contact Rona (admin@hakafa.org or ). Back to the Beis-ics with Rabbi Elder: In this session, Rabbi Elder will give an overview of Jewish texts.
