1 HAKAFA WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS WEEK OF JANUARY 16, 2019 Wednesday Afternoon Torah Study Wednesday, January 16, 1:00-2:30 PM Join us for weekly Torah Study! Each Wednesday afternoon we proceed through the Bible, verse by verse, discussing its content and various interpretations with Rabbi Elder. Nosh & Know on the North Shore NOTE DIFFERENT LOCATION THIS MONTH Thursday, January 17, 9:00 AM Home of Barbara and Allen Anderson (849 Oak Drive, Glencoe) Please join us for a lively conversation with Rabbi Elder! New participants are always welcome. Congregational Shabbat Service and Tu B Shevat Seder THIS FRIDAY Friday, January 18, immediately following 7:30 PM services Winnetka Community House (620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka) The Jewish New Year of Trees, Tu B Shevat (pronounced Too Bish-VAHT), falls on Monday, January 21 this year. According to the Talmud, the fifteenth of the Hebrew month of Shevat (Tu in Hebrew means fifteen ) is the day designated as the end of the period in which most of Israel s yearly rain has fallen. It also marks the time when trees have used up water from the previous year s rainfall and have begun absorbing the water of the New Year. On Tu B Shevat, by honoring the cycle of our trees, we sanctify the power of nature, our most precious resource. We do so through a Tu B Shevat Seder Help us usher in nature s New Year at this short, special celebration in which we will taste of various fruits and sip from four different kinds of juice. Film Group Saturday, January 19, 7:00 PM Please join us for our January film when we screen Disobedience. This film, based on Naomi Alderman s book, takes place in a North London ultra-orthodox community. Ronit left the Orthodox community to be a professional photographer in New York City. She never communicated with her father or others until she is notified of her father s (the Rabbi s) death. Her return for the funeral leads to an exploration of a transgression years before. The film provides an intimate examination of personal faith, free will, forbidden love, and familial relationships We re happy to have Stan Selinger, a clinical psychologist and family therapist, present this thought-provoking movie. Come for dinner at 6:00 PM! We ll be ordering pizza ($5 per person) from Little Red Hen, so please R.S.V.P. to Carol McCardell ( or mcsolomon@comcast.net) by noon on the 19th. Or, simply come for the movie at 7:00. Feel free to bring friends, family, salads, beverages, and/or a nosh, but no popcorn please!

2 Religious School Sunday, January 20, 9:45 AM 12:00 NOON Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road, Glencoe) Sunday Morning Adult Education Sunday, January 20, 10:35 AM 12:00 NOON Community Room 1 at the Takiff Center (999 Green Bay Road, Glencoe) During the month of January, Dr. Claire Sufrin will discuss Themes of American Jewish Life through the Eyes of Philip Roth ( ) as part of our Sunday Morning Adult Education Classes. This Sunday s topic is: Jews and Race: The Human Stain. The suggested (optional) reading is The Human Stain (2000). In this class, we will skip forward to a much later period in Roth's wide-ranging literary career. In the Human Stain, the third volume in his American Trilogy, Roth's alter ego, Nathan Zuckerman, narrates the story of a college professor, Coleman Silk, after he is accused of using racially offensive language in class. The accusation leads Silk to re-examine his own identity and the costs of fitting into American society. Read today, Zuckerman offers a lens onto American discourse in the 1990s and how Jews and other minorities might find a place within it. Dr. Claire Sufrin is Associate Professor of Instruction and Assistant Director of Jewish Studies at the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies at Northwestern University. Born and raised in the Chicago-area, she holds a BA in Religious Studies from Yale University and a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University. Her research and teaching interests include religion and literature, modern Jewish thought, and gender and religion. These are the details and optional reading for our final January session with Dr. Sufrin on January 27: What if? Roth and the Genre of Alternative History Suggested Reading: The Plot Against America (2004) This novel imagines that Roosevelt lost the presidential election in 1940 to Charles Lindbergh, who subsequently used his presidency to legitimize and institute the persecution of Jews. The novel follows the young Roth and his family through these turbulent and terrifying years. The novel represents Roth's experiment with the genre of "alternative history," which has proven to be particularly popular among Jewish novelists; we will consider what its particular appeal for Jews might be. Hakafa to Receive Faith in Action Award Sunday, January 20, 3:00 PM St. Paul AME Church (336 Washington Avenue, Glencoe) Hakafa is being honored by St Paul AME Church of Glencoe with one of its Faith in Action Awards during its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. We are receiving it for our work in Tornillo, TX outside the children s detention camp. Join us as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. King with our Glencoe neighbors and accept the award.

They started classes at RefugeeOne last week, and their English is already noticeably better. They are very eager to learn and very appreciative of all that Hakafa has done for them. The daughter, Eva, has been particularly excited by the new clothes and coat - she always tries everything on that we bring her. They are happy and in good spirits. Thanks to everyone who helped welcome them and make their new home so nice. Needed: Our new refugee father from Belarus needs winter boots. If anyone can donate newly or gently used size 11 men s winter boots, please contact Allison stein at ajzstein@gmail.com. The refugees that Hakafa is supporting are doing amazingly well and have achieved a lot in a short time, but it still isn t easy. As the new year and new challenges arrive for each of the refugees, as they struggle to make ends meet, we are asking for small donations to help them buy necessities that they can t afford on their own. Please make any donations payable to Rabbi Elder s Discretionary Fund, and put Refugees on the memo line of your check. Donations can be mailed to: Congregation Hakafa, P.O. Box 409, Glencoe, IL
