1 A Guide to the High Holiday Season At Congregation Beth Israel שנה טובה ומתוקה May you and your loved ones be blessed with love, health, and joy throughout this New Year. Congregation Beth Israel A Traditional, Egalitarian, & Fully Participatory Conservative Synagogue 15 Jamesbury Drive Worcester, MA

2 To Our Beth Israel Family, This past year, we have renovated B Yachad, rebuilt together, learned together, prayed together, dreamed together, and grew together. This year was also one in which we were challenged and nurtured. As we look to a New Year, may we find the strength within ourselves and others to continue to grow, to nourish, and to love together. O God, we have come to Your sanctuary To seek Your presence. Speak to us we pray, With the still, small voice Of Your spirit. If our lives have become shallow, Deepen them; If our principles have become shabby, Repair them. If our ideals have become tarnished, Restore them; If our hopes have become faded, Revive them. If our loyalties have grown dim, Brighten them; If our values have become confused, Clarify them. If our purposes have grown blurred, Sharpen them; If our horizons have become narrowed, Widen them. Make us worthy instruments Of Your will, And help us to live the words We pray. Amen.* Shanna Tova, Happy New Year! Rabbi Aviva, Ari, Hadar, Idan, Maayan, and Noam Fellman *This poem is from a 1978 High Holiday anthology compiled by Rabbi Loel Weiss. 2

6 High Holiday Seating and Ticket Information Dear Congregants, We are excited to be holding our first High Holiday services in our beautiful new sanctuary. It will be wonderful to have services with our fully accessible bima, brighter lighting, and improved sound system. Consistent with our current practice as outlined in our bylaws, High Holiday tickets will be available to members in good standing as follows: Each adult member will be entitled to one seat. Each unmarried child who has reached Bar or Bat Mitzvah age, or who has reached the academic year of Bar or Bat Mitzvah, up to age twenty-six (26), will be entitled to one seat. Tickets for guests and non-members to High Holiday services are available through the office. Please see the order sheet in this booklet for prices and deadline for ordering. As a reminder, the Board voted last year to end the custom of assigned seating for the High Holidays. There will be no assigned or reserved seating, and seating will be on a first-come first-served basis. Ushers will be available to help seat families together and to assist people who may need special seating accommodations. We are looking forward to having our whole community together as we share the awe and blessings of this holiday season. Best wishes for a sweet and Happy New Year. Nancy Spitulnik, President 6

7 Active involvement with USY helps develop leadership and confidence. Our Worcester USYers clearly display these traits whether in or out of the synagogue setting. They are filled with passion, optimism, energy and ru'ach. They are eager to participate in services for Shabbat and Holidays, whether leading our congregation on Shabbat or chanting the Yom Kippur haftorah. They love celebrating holidays together whether during our annual Sukkah Hop, Chanukah Party, Purim Carnival, or chocolate seder. They look forward to meeting Jews from other communities, denominations and Israel as well as our non-jewish friends. Our youth actively participate in discussions of hot topics and text study to better relate to the larger world. Over the past few years, they have volunteered in the following settings and with the following organizations: cemetery cleanups, Jewish War Veterans for flag placement on Memorial Day, Souper bowl, BI shelter meals and Eisenberg Assisted Living and Jewish Health Care Center. The opportunity to participate in these activities enables them to learn how to be leaders among their peers, the synagogue and the community as a whole and builds on their confidence in being able to succeed and do more. We are grateful to our own BI family for the years of support of our youth programming. We look to you again, as we do every year, for your continued support by way of your donations to our annual Youth booklet, our main fundraiser. Your gifts, no matter the amount, will enable our USY organization to continue to run programs locally and offer scholarships as needed for regional/international programming. Thank you for supporting our youth and helping them achieve the confidence to become the leaders of the future. L'Shanah Tovah, Laura Silver Traiger USY Advisor 7

14 SIMCHAT TORAH Congregation Beth Israel cordially invites you and your family to join us on Monday evening, October 1st at 7 pm as we celebrate this joyous occasion. We celebrate Simchat Torah with music, laughter, dancing and singing. The Torah ends with the death of Moses and immediately begins again with the story of Creation. The chanting of Genesis 1 is a reminder that humans participated in the creation and, like the cycle of the Torah reading, this partnership never ends. Join us on Tuesday, October 2nd, at 9 am in honoring this year s Kallat Torah - Elaine Baskin Chattan Bereishit - Bob Golden 14
