2 5779 High Holiday Information High Holiday Information Information regarding High Holiday Services, tickets, and other important details is included in this mailing. Take a few moments to review it, and feel free to call the office at if you have any questions. Rosh Hashanah begins Sunday evening, September 9. Be sure to return your High Holiday Registration Form as soon as possible. High Holiday Services Congregation Beth El offers four services for congregants and their guests: 1. Main Service in Beth El Bender Sanctuary 2. Main Service at Walt Whitman High School Carrying on traditions that go back many decades at Beth El, there will be two main services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (just one on the second day of Rosh Hashanah.) These two services are officiated by Rabbi Greg Harris, Rabbi Fabián Werbin, Hazzan Asa Fradkin, and congregants Steve Kuperberg and Josh Dickstein. They bring together families and friends to customary seats for familiar prayers and family memories, powerful spiritual moments, and provocative sermons. Synagogue leaders are honored for their service to the community. The Conservative movement s wonderful High Holiday prayerbook, Mahzor Lev Shalem, is used. Special musical arrangements of the prayers are added each year. 3. Kol Haneshama Rosh Hashanah (first day), Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur (through the end of Musaf) The Kol Haneshama High Holiday Service is a lay-led, highly participatory service that blends creativity and tradition. The service is a little shorter and emphasizes congregant-led discussion and song. You will hear divrei Torah by Beth El congregants, as well as sermons from Rabbis Harris and Werbin. Marak Hayom, Beth El s teen a capella group, will also participate. The service begins at 10:00 am with the Torah service. The Rabbinical Assembly High Holiday prayerbook, Mahzor Lev Shalem, is provided at all three services listed above. Tickets are required for all services, and ushers or security guards will request that you show your tickets as you enter the building. 4. Beth El Family Services The two services listed below are designed to include both parents and children in the themes of the holidays, exploring Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur through stories, songs, and prayer. Due to space limitations, at least one child in the household must be in the appropriate grade range in order for Family Service tickets to be issued. 3rd 5th grades (younger and older siblings welcome): 10:30 am to 12:00 Noon on Rosh Hashanah (both days) and Yom Kippur. Rabbi Jessica Minnen is returning once again to lead this service, which will be held at Bethesda United Methodist Church (main floor sanctuary), across Old Georgetown Road from Beth El on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and in the Swoff Chapel at Beth El on second day Rosh Hashanah. K 4th grade (younger and older siblings welcome): 10:30 am to 12:00 Noon on first day Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur at Whitman High School. Elisha Frumkin, Beth El s education director, and Rabbi Max Nissen, our assistant education director, will lead this service. Those participating in the Family Services are welcome to sign up for one of the other services as well if you wish to attend before and/or after the Family Service. Other Children s Services and Babysitting Please see pages 8-9 for a complete listing of services, including those for children not in the Family Services grade ranges described above. Babysitting for children 2-6 years of age is available at Beth El only. Teen Discussions All post- b nai mitzvah youth are encouraged to attend one of the main services listed above. In addition, they are invited to discuss themes of the High Holidays with members of Beth El s Upper School faculty at approximately 11:45 am on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on 2 Congregation Beth El

3 Yom Kippur, as well as Kol Nidre evening, at Beth El, and on the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur at Whitman High School. NEW THIS YEAR! In addition to the regular Rosh Hashanah evening services at 6:30 pm, this year we are introducing Ma ariv and Meditation on the second evening (Monday, September 10). We will have a second chance to look back, look within, and settle ourselves on the path of spiritual renewal. How to Pay Payment Information Payment for all dues, tuition, etc., should be made by check payable to Beth El, unless you are paying through the member portal (see next paragraph). At least the first quarter of the full amount due must be returned with your High Holiday Registration Form in order to receive High Holiday tickets. High Holiday Registration through the Member Portal Congregants are able to pay their dues, tuition, etc., request High Holiday seats, and update their Yizkor book information through the member portal. Make payments on the My Finances tab; check the boxes next to the desired invoices, then click Pay Bills and follow the directions. Links to request High Holiday tickets and Yizkor book information are available on the home page under My Messages. Log in or sign up for the member portal at at members.bethelmc.org. For questions and assistance, contact Tiarra Joslyn at tjoslyn@bethelmc.org. Please join us for this new initiative that provides an alternative to the main evening service and helps us prepare for the year ahead. Tashlich As in the past, Beth El will conduct a Tashlich service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Monday, September 10, at 4:00 pm. We will gather on the bridge over the stream behind the Sunrise Senior Living building (formerly Spring House) on Battery Lane. Special Financial Arrangements If you need to make special financial arrangements for dues and/or tuition, please contact our Executive Director, Sheila Bellack, at , extension 306, by Friday, July 7, or July 17-September 15. High Holiday Seats On the Registration Form, please rank your first three choices of service location and enter the total number of tickets needed for members, children 7-25 years of age (as of June 1, 2018), and non-members. Full payment for additional High Holiday tickets must accompany the Registration Form. Accounts must be current before tickets will be mailed. While tickets are for a specific service, there is no reserved seating within each service. Seating is first-come, first-served. Please help us accommodate everyone comfortably and without commotion by not holding seats for family members and/or guests who arrive later. Ushers will fill unoccupied seats as needed. High Holiday Registration Forms will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to maximize the probability of obtaining seats for the service of your choice, please submit the Registration Form, together with the appropriate payment, as soon as possible; tickets will go on sale to non-members after Tuesday, July 31. The form must be fully completed and include payment of any past due balance, at least one quarter of the membership dues, security assessment, building fund, and tuition (if applicable), and full payment of optional organization/activity fees and additional High Holiday tickets. Please order tickets for yourself and immediate family members only if they are attending services. In accordance with our policy, we can provide free tickets to members children who have not reached their 26th birthday before June 1, Tickets for adult children 26 and over, relatives of Beth El families visiting for the High Holidays, and members of the community may be purchased for $200 per adult and $100 per child under 18. 5 B Yachad - Personal Philanthropy at Beth El B Yachad (Hebrew for Together) is intended to make giving to Beth El both meaningful and simple. The choice of what to support and how you do it is in your hands. Beth El donors may choose to make an annual gift above and beyond dues and school fees early in the year and then direct the allocation of those funds, avoiding most additional solicitations for individual projects. Or, perhaps you are comfortable deciding as you always have, during the year, which programs or services you will financially support. The goal of B Yachad is to honor your choice. We are pleased to be among those who strengthen our congregation by making an Annual Campaign Gift: Annual Gift Amount $ Duration of Gift 3 years 2 years this year Please allocate our gift as follows: $ Adult Learning $ Am Yisrael Chai $ Annual Campaign General Fund (area most needed) $ Beth El Support Foundation (Endowment) $ Caring Community Outreach $ Community Engagement $ Early Childhood $ Family Education $ Gala $ High Holidays & Festivals $ Morning Minyan (breakfast sponsorship) $ Mortgage Reduction $ Ner Tamid* (ongoing synagogue operations) $ Pillars* (offsetting congregant dues and tuition adjustments) $ Program Funds $ Religious School $ Scroll/Website $ Senior Member Services $ Sorkin Teen Israel Trip $ Strategic Reserve Fund $ Tikkun Olam $ Youth Activities *If you supported either Pillars or Ner Tamid in , the amount of your gift will be added to your November 2018 statement and will be included in your B Yachad giving.
