This is an extraordinary opportunity to encourage students to learn beyond the confines of the classroom. We had 19 students ranging from Years 2 to 6 exhibiting their research and investigative skills. There are three components to the PIP: a written component; an interactive component and a speech. Their investment of time, effort, energy, research skills and of course, presentation skills, all come together on the night showcasing the talents and hard work of all those who extended themselves to produce an extraordinary evening. There were many highlights, some wonderful moments and some unique exhibits. A very worthwhile evening and one that showcases those students who are either gifted and talented or have a passion for a particular personal interest project. My thanks to our Welfare Coordinator Hannah Trenowden, for her inspirational leadership of the project. My thanks too, to Michele Hanwell-Short our High School Head of General Studies and to Sally- Anne Robertson, our Science and Maths Teacher extraordinaire in the Primary School, for taking on the difficult task of adjudication. 3 DVAR TORAH PARSHAS VAYEITZEI Selflessness in its true form doesn t happen so often. For someone to truly put aside their wants, desires and comfort for the total sake of another person without any gratification is rare. However, in the story of Yaakov marrying Rochel and Leah in this week s parsha, we witness this beautiful character trait in both Yaakov and Rochel. Rochel s selflessness is legendary; once she knew that Lavan would deceive Yaakov and put Leah under the Chuppa instead of her, she graciously taught the secret signs to Leah that she had previously agreed upon with Yaakov to prove her own identity under the Chuppa. In doing so, she gave away her destiny to her sister, not knowing what would lay in her future ahead, only to spare her sister shame and embarrassment. Yaakov then made a deal with Lavan to work another 7 years to marry Rochel. The commentaries are puzzled by this; it is known that the Avos kept all the Mitzvos even before the Torah was given, and marrying 2 sisters is forbidden by Torah law. One explanation that s offered is that Rochel and Leah converted to Judaism in order to marry Yaakov and ceased to be sisters after their conversion. But in reality, keeping Torah was only out of choice and as a personal stringency in those times and thus there was no halachic basis for conversion then. Yaakov had promised to marry Rochel and going back on his word even after marrying Leah would be considered deception, which was universally prohibited at the time. Even though Yaakov elected to follow the entire Torah, in this case he was willing to forego his own personal stringency to avoid hurting the feelings of Rochel, who had waited 7 years to marry him. True selflessness means totally putting one s physical, emotional, spiritual needs aside for a moment to help another person with what they need. Good Shabbos. CHAYA GOURARIE

4 EARLY LEARNING BABIES AND BOOKS This week we hosted a presentation by Wendy Dolowitz, program manager from Shalom. This well attended event was held in our multi-purpose space in the ECC. Wendy presented a talk on why reading is important, how to read to your children and read several stories to the children. Reading with your children: Teaches a baby about communication Builds listening, memory, and vocabulary skills Fosters social and emotional development Creates a bond between the reader and the listener Promotes pre-reading skills In the words of Dr Seuss: You are never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child. 5 EARLY LEARNING THE LIGHT JOURNEY BEGINS After our very exciting Rosh Chodesh celebrations last week (hot dogs and a rally!), the children in Early Learning were very excited to notice that Chanukah is on the way! They are beginning to learn all about the story and customs, using a variety of mediums to create beautiful decorations and have manipulating loose parts to create their own menorahs. Each of the rooms are exploring light sources. The Rimon children in particular are experimenting with light, discovering different light sources and will shortly journey to the Museum of Modern Art to work with the artists in residence on a light project. During these lessons the class has been learning the topic There is only one Me. This unit provides students with the opportunity to learn about their social and emotional selves by exploring personal values, feelings and capabilities. Students investigate how to recognise and appreciate differences in the values, feelings and capabilities of others. The activities focus on individual and small group activities, which enable students to identify and practice the processes involved in promoting personal growth and wellbeing. JANINE DAVIDOWITZ

11 GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL Mrs Devorah Leah Joseph was the guest speaker for Torah and Tea, she shared thoughts about the concept of Tracht Gut Vet Zein Gut and the campaign her family started in honour of Rabbi Mendel Itkin a h. Everyone enjoyed the hot chips! Thank you captains for arranging the first of many Rosh Chodesh Torah and Teas! In honour of Rosh Chodesh Kislev we enjoyed a special breakfast with pastries, hot chocolate and yoghurt with muesli. Chaya and Faigy explained the significance of the day and the message we can take from it. We also watched some inspiring videos from the Kinus Hashluchim Banquet that express the theme of reaching out to every Jew and always spreading light. MESSAGE FROM THE SHLUCHOS : What another amazing week!! There is only 1 more week left of the connect 4 growth program, so make sure you are filling out your booklets and trying to grab as many points as you can so you can come on the grand trip and be part of the raffle. The KTC books have stamps on the front page/s and the security barcode has Kesser Torah College (sometimes Yeshiva College) printed on it. There are an increasing number of books being lost and returned incorrectly to other libraries. Please be aware that if a student loses any library book, they must reimburse the library for the cost of purchasing another copy. If students are granted leave before the end of the school year, could you please ensure their library books are returned BEFORE leaving the College.
