CONNECTIONS 10 OCTOBER CHESHVAN 5779 TERM 4 WEEK 1 COLLEGE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE / TERM 4 FACELIFT As readers will notice, our weekly edition of Connections has undergone a facelift. This is primarily due to our new Communications Manager (Graphic Designer & Social Media Specialist) Ruth Gold, who commenced her appointment in this position from the start of this term. We wish her much hatzlacha as she takes our communications at KTC to a new level. As highlighted before, we are determined to move our communications (letters, excursion notes, permission slips, etc.) over to Skoolbag on the App. Ruth will pioneer this project. Please make sure that you are able to download the App so that you can access Skoolbag on your preferred device. Hopefully, this will usher in a new era where communication and transactional business with the College will be facilitated much more easily and you will have greater access to the daily activities of the College College Captains We are delighted to announce the College Captains for 2019: Boys High School College Captain Levi Hoffman Vice-Captain Rafi Franklin Girls High School College Captain Tammy Lazarus Vice-Captain Chanie Gershowitz We are also excited to announce the full-time appointment of our Hebrew Teacher, Sagit Oron, who has accepted the position of Head of Hebrew Department in Primary School, from Sagit has many years of experience in education in general: having taught Mathematics and General Studies in Israel, and also as a qualified Language and Hebrew teacher here in Australia at a number of Jewish Day Schools. Sagit joined KTC at the beginning of 2018 and has made a very positive impact on the teaching of Ivrit in our Primary School and enjoys the reputation of being an engaging, empathic and caring teacher. We wish her much hatzlacha as she moves forward in her new leadership role. She will be working with our Head of Hebrew in the High School, Lea Behar and together, they will ensure that KTC s Ivrit is well placed to meet the highest standards of Ivrit in our school. We wish you an exciting, productive and fulfilling Term 4. Shabbat Shalom Good Shabbos Roy Steinman College Principal

DVAR TORAH / PARSHAS NOACH In this week s Parsha of Noach, we are taught of the Great Flood Mabul that took place in the times of Noach. Interestingly, the waters are also called Mei Noach The waters of Noach. It seems strange to label the Mabul as being connected to Noach when he was seemingly not responsible for this colossal and devastating consequence. What did Noach do wrong? The Zohar tells us, the reason that the Mabul is The waters of Noach is because Noach did not pray on behalf of his generation. This is the same Noach to which the Posuk refers as a Tzadik in his generation. Without taking too many words to elaborate, the reader can take a moment and digress the magnitude of the above statement. From this we can learn a very important lesson. It is not sufficient for us to merely occupy ourselves with our families and personal lives. Rather, it is crucial and incumbent on all of us to concern ourselves with the welfare of others as well. When you see someone is in need, step in and give assistance. Pray for them. Lend a listening ear. Be it physical, spiritual or otherwise, be concerned for the well-being of those around us. Let not something happen because we couldn t be bothered to help. Surely, Hashem will give us the strength and ability to follow in this way with much success. Good Shabbos, Rabbi Winterfeld. CANDLE LIGHTING 6:48PM / SHABBOS ENDS 7:44PM

EARLY LEARNING EARLY LEARNING - WELCOME TO THE NEST This week we welcomed Shia, Dov, Rafael, Judah and Noah to the Nest. Our youngest members of the KTC community have embraced a week of firsts. First stories with Morah Yael, first songs with Morah Kwan, first play dough play, first bubble play, first hide and seek outside (complete with giggles), first sand tasting, first sharing of toys with new friends, first sleeps and first blowing kisses goodbye to a very lucky Morah Virginia.

EARLY LEARNING EARLY LEARNING - BUILDING NOACH'S TEIVA The children in Early Learning were so excited to learn this week s Parsha and hear the exciting story of Noach building the Teiva (ark). Each class used a variety of different materials to build a model of the Teiva and bring the story to life. We spoke about the big Mabul (flood) that Hashem made in Noach s time and the children were excited to notice that the weather this week was very appropriate for the parsha! They used mathematical thinking to measure the amount of rain that fell this week in our playground. The children also designed beautiful rainbows similar to the rainbow that Hashem showed Noach after the Mabul. We also learned the brocho that we say when we see a rainbow.

PRIMARY SCHOOL BHS / GHS / Primary Welcome to the final term of I trust that you all enjoyed the break and are prepared for a busy few months. We have begun the term with our students taking advantage of our alternate learning spaces. The library has become very popular for all students as has the playground, when the rain cleared. Our alternate spaces provide students with a break from the regular classroom setting and their learning flourishes as a result. Our Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan assembly took place on Wednesday where many students were recognised for their outstanding achievements at the end of last term. Well done to everyone! Next week Year 5 and 6 students will enjoy a day in Canberra, exploring our parliamentary system, our war history and all things Science at Questacon. I look forward to joining the students for this exciting excursion. Teachers of other years are also planning excursions for the other students, later in the term. Look out for further information. Please be sure to join us at 2pm on Tuesday 23rd October for our Parent Information Session for Kindness on Purpose. Noelene Bellingham Head of Primary School

GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL DT/ART & HSIE NOTICE BOARD CLASS SHABBOS MEALS Save the date! Students have been learning and applying a broad range of techniques to these cushions including transfer printing using wax crayons, tie dyeing, embroidery and joining techniques with a sewing machine. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed making their cushions. Even with some of the more technical battles they face from time to time, they have done such a good job of progressing to make their final outcomes. In Year 8GHS History we completed learning about the Vikings last term, which culminated in incredibly informative posters (please see attached photo) that argued the Vikings were not the blood-thirsty raiders that history remembers. In Year 9&10GHS Commerce we have recently completed learning about Law and Society, and we re very much looking forward to our excursion to the Justice and Police Museum. In Year 10GHS Geography we explored Human Wellbeing last term, a highlight included making models and information posters (please see attached photos) that depicted how geographical factors can influence development of a particular country. I wish Rivka and Rachel all the best in their upcoming Geography HSC examination, both students are incredibly capable and passionate geographers.

BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL DT/ART & HSIE In Design & Technology students in Year 7 are busy finishing off a cushion made for a family member or friend. Students have been learning and applying a broad range of techniques to these cushions including transfer printing using wax crayons, tie dyeing and joining techniques with a sewing machine. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed making their cushions. Even with some of the more technical battles they face from time to time, they have done such a good job of progressing to make their final outcomes. During Sukkos, the BHS enjoyed a Simchas Beis Hashoeva farbrengen with Rabbi Moss. A big thank you to the Berkovits family for hosting! In Year 7BHS Geography we have moved onto Place and Livability, where we explore factors that influence where we live in Australia ad around the world. In Year 9BHS History we have just commenced learning about World War One and World War Two, which was extensively delved into during our incredible excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum.
