1 November 15, Kislev, 5779 The Weekly Voice will not be published on Thursday, November 22nd. We are taking a holiday for Thanksgiving. It will return on Thursday, November 29th. In case of urgent or timely updates, we will those who receive the Voice. From Rabbi GaberEarlier this week, I went to Pittsburgh to visit my friend, Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers, the Rabbi of Tree of Life*Or L simcha. It was a very moving time offering him support and witnessing the incredible resiliency of his community in the aftermath of the attack. In the evening, I attended a performance with him based on a book, The Children of Willesden Lane, which recalls the story of Lisa Jura who escaped Vienna on the Kindertransport in 1938 or Her daughter, Mona Golabek, led an emotional musical and narrative performance of her mother s story. Out of tragedy, people can be uplifted through humanity s goodness to others. On my return home, I realized that I was close to the Flight 93 memorial created in memory of the airline flight that crashed on 9/11. In all that I did, I found sadness, but I also found strength and uplift and the knowledge that we can create a future even out of devastation. By traveling and visiting new places, I learned about history and culture. I also found resilience and strength. All of which I would not have learned if I had not made the journey this week. A couple of weeks ago, some of our members journeyed to the National Liberty Museum and had a wonderful time learning about Jewish life in North America and Philadelphia. Their trip reminds me of the twelfth century traveler and storyteller, Benjamin of Tudela. As part of a medieval Jewish history course in college, I read accounts of some of his travels through Europe and Asia and other places, including the land of Israel. Without the aid of modern transportation or communication, he shared vivid descriptions of the ruins of the ancient city of Nineveh where Jonah encouraged the people to repent. We don t really know the reasons for his extensive travels or his vivid portrayal of those communities, but we have learned a lot about the notable scholars and celebrities of that time. His descriptions of Jewish communities and his sharing of the varied ritual practices in those communities have taught us much about our ancestors. 4 ISRAEL FORUM HAMAS ROCKETS AND THE IDEA OF A TWO STATE SOLUTION I recently read an article by Jonathan Tobin from which I used the title of my piece. The latest clash with Hamas in the Gaza Strip shows how irrelevant the on-going effort to force more Israeli territorial withdrawals is to the reality the Jewish State faces. Hamas is dedicated to Israel's destruction, and no amount of negotiations will end their goal. Yes, as we see in this recent flare up a quiet period can be agreed between the parties, but in the long run Hamas will not change its vision of no Israel. Support for Hamas's military arsenal and tunnel building into Israel comes from Iran. Iran, the global sponsor of terrorism, pours millions of dollars into the coffers of Hamas leaders for one goal, confront Israel. Iran's acceptance of the Nuclear Agreement resulted in a reported $150 billion dollars of held money by the U.S. for them. This has funded not only Hamas but to Israel's North, Hezbollah, Syria's Assad regime, the Houthi Rebels in Yemen and worldwide terror plots throughout Africa, Asia and South America. Remember in 1992 and 1994 Hezbollah operatives bombed the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, killing 29 and wounding 100, and then the Argentine Jewish Community Center, killing 85 and wounding 300. The two State Solution requires compromise on both sides, but on the Palestinian side Hamas and the Palestinian Authority are technically enemies and polls in the West Bank reveal a majority of Palestinians support Hamas. So despite many people of good will wanting a two state solution, their wish has little chance to succeed if Hamas, supported by Iran and Qatar, continues to be in power. Imagine if Hamas took control of the West Bank as the governing body, what would be in store for Israel. This article is the opinion of Alan Agree and not that of Brothers of Israel. 6 Between now and the end of the year, retirees 70 1/2 years of age and older are required to take a distribution of traditional retirement accounts or face tax penalties. But if you donate your RMD to the synagogue you may experience tax advantages. Here is an article from US News and World Report that outlines some basic information: articles/ /how-to-donate-your-requiredminimum-distribution-to-charity Of course, consult your financial advisor for more information.

7 CBOI recently added the option of text messaging our members in times of emergency. But you have the ability to OPT-OUT. If you do not want to receive text messages we deem of an truly urgent nation, please contact the office by phone at or and we are happy to respect your wishes.

8 Continued from page 1 It has been my experience that many people learn so much by visiting, touring and learning about a community and Judaism. Just two years ago, 29 of us traveled to Israel together. We learned so much during that trip. And from time to time, many of those participants in our Israel trip reminisce and recall significant moments, such as singing L cha Dodi, a Friday night prayer, in the same synagogue that Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz wrote and used it for the first time. Or our visit to the David Citadel s museum in Jerusalem where we learned about Jerusalem history while standing in the fortress. We also stood on the Golan Heights learning about the Yom Kippur war and the incredible sacrifices made by Israeli soldiers and their small number of tanks against the much larger Syrian Army. And to hear the mortar fire off in the distance as Israelis told us about the mobile hospitals Israel set up to treat Syrian wounded today. So, I would like to propose the creation of a new synagogue committee called CBOI Travels. I would use CBOI Road Scholars, but that name is trademarked; the meaning, of course, is the same. Together, we can plan and travel to places around the United States, learning about a particular community s Jewish life and history. For example, we can plan a day trip to Jewish Philadelphia or a trip to New York s Lower East side. For the adventurous, let s plan a trip to the south and visit the Museum of Slavery and Civil Rights in Selma, AL, and walk across the same bridge crossed by Martin Luther King, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and others to demonstrate for equal rights in this country. We can stay home and read about all these places and events in books, articles and the internet, but to really connect, we must take a journey. Please join Sharon Segarra and me as we begin to create a community of learners and travelers who would like to experience history in person. Together we will be the modern version of Benjamin of Tudela, visiting and learning about Jewish communities around the world, returning with ideas of how to strengthen our community and create a vibrant future. Look for the announcement of a first committee meeting in upcoming Voices and .
